First pond ever this year - so much fun! 40 gallon stock tank. Water lettuce, hyacinth and guppy grass all grew amazing. Favourite plant was “mojito” mint. It grew fantastic and smelled real nice. Put it in a basket inside the pond hanging from the edge. Same for potato vine. Raised mutt guppies. Tons of babies with super colour.
Bought 6 marginal plants and the only thing one that grew were dwarf king tut and an umbrella plant. Hyacinths just kept dying off, frogbit and anachris did OK but hornwort went crazy.
My favorite pond plant this year was a pitcher plant that was planted in a floating basket. Cardenial plant with creeping Jenny also good. The plant I was most surprised with is a Cana I got from Lowes. It was in the bog and did phenomenal!
Creeping Jenny worked well, I made a floating island for some as well as aroubd the pond. I bought a floating planter that has "forget me nots" and that plant grew crazy! Lots of small blue flowers. Of course water lettuce water hyacinths and frog bit had to be cleared out almost daily from growing so much.
I have had a 200 gallon pond in Northern IL for many years. I usually have some lilies, lots of hornwort, water hyacinth and water lettuce as well dwarf papyrus. As soon as I add duckweed, the goldfish devour it. I didn't have good luck with the hyacinths and water lettuce this year. Despite having lots of plants, I ended up with green water after recurring rain storms, so I installed a UV light and that took care of it. My goldfish get to enjoy the cooler temps a bit longer, but then they'll come inside to their indoor pond. I used to overwinter them outside, but It can get VERY cold here in winter, and one year we lost power for days, the pond deicer stopped working and my goldfish ended up dead. Never again!
Beautiful. Yall did a wonderful job. My 40 gallon porch pond has done really well this year. I let it over winter and all the plants and fish did great. (Florida) Bacopa gave me quite a few flowers. No flowers from the hydrocotyle but it went everywhere including my yard haha. Pickerel rush grew beautifully and gave a couple flower stalks. As a bog style plant "black magic taro" has done awesome. 6 pups so far this year. Let a volunteer primrose grow from the pot and while it is tall lanky and now in the way of walk space, it did give me lots of flowers lol. Right now it looks like Charlie Brown Christmas tree went to Halloween Town. Dollar Tree has glittery eye ball ornaments so I had to get some. No pruning till after Halloween. The back yard got a 110 gallon back in spring/early summer. Those plants have not done well and I think it's due to low fertilizer and the flag fish keep eating the leaves. I've been feeding spirulina flakes more and the creeping jenny and hydrocotyle are making a slow come back. The dwarf cattails took off like wild fire in the beginning. Now they're looking rather brown and crunchy. To over winter the 110 I plan to get a mini greenhouse that's meant for a raised garden bed and rig it to the top. For insulation it has leftover styrofoam sheets around the outside and soon a layer of something else to hold it all together.
I do have a pond, but I did not put plants in it. If you were going to suggest plants for newb, what would you suggest for me? I think I have the same pond. Kidney stone shape about 50/70 gallons? I had no intention of breeding fish. I just had a half dozen feeder goldfish in there to knock the mosquito population down.
I'm still looking for plants I can have on the bottom of my tank but that won't go crazy and take over. I had a pothos with it's roots in the tank, but the cats decided it was fun to shred it. Also, my rams unexpectedly laid eggs and I don't know if I should leave the tank as is or move them to another setup.

I struggled this year w/the pond, I don't think I put enough floating plants to provide shade and soak up nutrients. I would've much rather had your hair algae than the green water that plagued all summer. I've never had this happen in 6 yrs of patio ponding. I refused to purchase the usual Hyacinth & Water lettuce because last year they brought in leaches!
I'd love to see you break the pond down. And see what the fish have done. I laughed when you talked about the creeping Jenny and said "this guy" and "he's". I think girl when I hear the name.
I didn’t have a good pond season this year. My LFS usually has loads of pond plants, but not this year. When I go to Lowe’s, I’m never sure what plants are good for ponds.
We've been ponding for 20+ years. I've never been able to have a good supply of plants because I have had several koi. This spring we were down to only one koi and I have a lilly planted (the original to the pond) and had an umbrella plant in there that did really well until my shubunkins kept digging it up. Our pond is about 1500 gallons and I would love to have tons of plantings but the darn fish have other ideas, lol.
Nice, the pond is looking great and the plants really healthy. I’m going to try and keep my pond going over the winter, it’s about a metre deep at the deepest point so hopefully won’t freeze all the way to the bottom and I’ve used mostly native plants so they should survive, fingers crossed 🤞 😬
2nd comment. The plant that some how got in my pond was guppy grass. And was very sorry of it..Had a few buckets of it that was removed. Still trying to rid the pond of it.
Wish I could have plants in my outside tank,actually the stock tank for horses and cows but I have fish in it. After therapy today dmv had to check my ability to drive. FYI when they ask you to name a road sign you might see on your travels, pick your own vegetables isn’t an acceptable answer.
Maybe some more floaters to help cut back some of the natural sunlight, that might help with the algae issue a bit. Even with some of the plants not doing well I would call the pond a success! It turned out beautiful.
Water lettuce and water hyacinth completely covered the surface of my 150 gallon pond and wiped out the terrible hair algae infestation I had this summer. Give them a try. First year ponding for me and I loved it.@@thesmallscape
Creeping Jenny is a perennial groundcover. I gave a tiny bit to a friend of mine who put it on the side of his 10 x 12 foot pond and forgot about it. It basically took over the whole pond. Then winter came and he, once again, forgot about it. I was over there the other day and it was astonishing how much it had grown and took over the pond. Since my own creeping jenny died a few years ago, he yanked out a bunch of it from the bottom of the pond, which was basically mud at this point because the liner broke and the pond needs to be renovated, but I stuck that in one of my mini ponds and it's growing like crazy. On top of that, the tiny bit from before that I had stuck in a pot and thought was dead, is now putting out leaves. Actually, some states consider creeping jenny to be invasive. Personally, if there's too much, I would simply remove some and stick it either somewhere where it wouldn't be a problem or into the compost bin!
I planted creeping Jenny in the bog filter for my little garden pond, and because it was doing so well with it's feet wet, I populated 3 indoor tanks with it. In only 1 has it shown much die back of leaves. The others have been beautiful, with the bright green-yellow of the jenny popping against the other plants I've added. Most of the jenny is floating and sending roots down in the water, but I planted some as backdrop in the substrate and it seems to be thriving.
Ha I had the same thing happen with my tall plant - a red canna Lilly. The thing fell over every windy day! Water hyacinth was the plant I had the most success with.
Tried my first pond this year with Shibunkins in. Started with 5 and am amazed at how many 1 inch plus babies are swimming around. I guess will have to get them out as I don't think they will survive low winter temperatures. Great video thank you
I really enjoyed this video! Fun to see how all the plants did! Tossing that bacopa in to see how it would do was a good idea! Earlier this season I had put 2 mutt endler/guppy fry in the pond and when I took them out last week, the female was almost double in length and width of a typical adult that I have in my aquarium. Just “living off the land” from whatever nutrients it found in the pond.
@@thesmallscape so true! Also about the algae thing, I’ve heard a combo of barley straw and lavender stalks work to keep new growth at bay and should be fish safe. Start in spring when before major algae growth begins in a well oxygenated area. It’s so fascinating how things work together like that!! I’ve never tried because I’m too lazy to get my hands on some barley straw. I have the lavender in the yard already!!! 😆😊

I am thinking u need to do a palladium in your fish room. It would be cool with your plants and fish in the water.
