      Go tanganyikan! Get some shell dwellers and a bunch of big snail shells, I love Occelatus. Get some Calvus or Compresiceps, they're slow growing and absolutely the coolest looking cichlid. Get a Juli Transcriptus as well you'll love how it explores the tank. Then throw in some smaller cyps to cruise the top as a school, it will be very enjoyable.

    I wonder if the difference between the tanks could have something to do with the light/dark substrates. Maybe the light sand in the dirted tank artificially creates more light by reflecting it back up?

    • @ipolee

    The river tank is the best! For the new big tank...Maybe focus in on a particular cichlid flock for a breeding tank? Cichlids as a mixed group are pretty and active...but I think show much more interesting behavior in a species specific tank. Kribensis for example have interesting parenting behavior...but the ones I like most are dwarf Cichlids, so that huge tank might be sort of wasted unless you did the big mixed flock. I think, someday, that tank would be great as an amazon darkwater biotope pauladarium with dart frogs. Ha!,challenge set...

  • @ShaneZettelmier

    A couple things to consider when comparing the two. One is the dirt is broken up more and releases its nutrients into the water quickly but may not last as long as the aqua soil and the other thing to remember also is you used white sand on that so light is reflecting off of that sand and hitting more of the plants than the black aqua soil probably. But dirt works great, aqua soil is basically man-made dirt. also you have to consider where you get your dirt and make sure it’s not a yard where they’ve been spraying pesticides and herbicide‘s a lot and dirt is going to be different quality all the time, some areas might be very rich and perfect and some might be very washed out and have almost no nutrients. I know a lot of people use miracle grow organic potting soil and that would be at least a little more consistent.

    I'm surprised you didn't realize that the algae was an aspect of difference between the two soils. Garden soil is already "digested" by microbes, so you won't have a spike in nutrients like the artificially made aqua soil that leads to an algae bloom. Also, I think you have a rare plant that's called Limnophila Sp. Dwarf Bonsai. The regular strain gets big...fast ! I've been looking for what you have for a while here in the states. Do you sell ?

    For the cichlid tank Id recommend yellow lab cichlids. They can be mixed with other African cichlids.
    If you wanted dwarf cichlids German blue, gold and electric blue rams are beautiful but they are not that Hardy, well established tanks with 26c-28c water is recommended for them. Apistogramas or bolivian rams could be other options and are quite hardy. (some apistos are really cool) you could probably put some apistos in the angel tank.
    For angels my favourites are the koi, gold and platinum ones. ;)

    I love your videos! Not trying to criticize your experiment becuase I love these types of videos, but I think for this to be a fair test you would need to cap the aquasoil also. Or you could just run the dirt tank without a sand cap. I believe the algae in the aquasoil tank comes from the aquasoil being directly exposed to the aquarium water, if the dirt was directly exposed to the aquarium water i feel like there would be either the same amount of algae or maybe even more in the dirt aquarium. Definitely looking forward to seeing what these tanks do long term!!🙌👌

    If U went with dwarf cichlids u could do rams. Midnight rams are some of my favourite. They like the water around 80 at a minimum. 82 is best. If u go with larger cichlids,u could do a basic African cichlids tank. Also it looks nice with them u could get a 3D background. Just ideas. In that large of a tank I would do Africans but. U could put a pair of midnight rams in a 10 gallon so.

    You should do a collaboration with Dustin of Dustin's Fish Tanks. He's the king of dirted tanks. It looks like the dirted tank is doing better overall for sure, but I would say the hair grass is doing better in the aqua soil.

    You could have cleaned wood B and put it in tank A. Tank A's wood go into B.
    Either way I can tell you,dirted tanks get exhausted as everything the plants need to grow is leached out and lost with water changes. Then,you are back to the real way of growing plants...nutrients added. Iron gluconate being the one that makes the biggest difference to the point others are not even needed. Plus,Iron boosts plants and not algae. Just when you thought you need more light?..turns out it's the right amount of iron you needed. I had enough light all along.
    Aquatic gardening IS hydroponics all the way. Substrates are for anchoring plants mostly(plant tablets will also do fine as the enriched substrates go inert). It's what you put in the water that they absorb with leaves,stems,and roots that cause plant growth..along with the right light of course.

    I think you should get another ranchu. Maybe the black one and a really reddish one. Cichlids are ok but kind of overdone, every other doctors office has one. Lol. Kinda seen it all. Do one with all weird fish. Khuli leaches she stuff.

    I like your idea to go for cichlids. I am thinking to setup a new tank with cichlids as well. Have to find a spot to place it though. I do not have a cool fishroom like you, my (currently 3) aquariums are in the livingroom of my appartment.

    I set up a planted tank with a well liked substrate and its basically failed, everything kind of died and is slowly coming back as if a shock phase. I'm going to try the garden soil method now.

    • @saxon3980
      @saxon3980 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could well have been shock. A lot of the plants sold, especially online are grown emmersed, so not under water. They do this to speed up the growth, then when you put them in an aquarium with less CO2 etc they die back, this is a big problem with Crypts, but eventually they'll grow back.

    • @luisg1653
      @luisg1653 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@saxon3980 a few plants were growing back very slowly. I tore the tank down and restarted with processed garden soil and a sand cap, got some new plants to add to my old ones and they have new leaves already. Dirt works.

    IMO the algae is just a result of not having the so capped with sand in the aquasoil tank. If the soil wasn't calling the dirt it would probably do the same. I'm guessing if you capped the aqua soil then it would be similar as far as algae anyways.
