The two tractors engines are identical to the 671 Detroit "General Grant" tank engines, This monster makes short work of the huge acres that are Typical of modern Australian broad-acre farming.

The configuration it has and the performance it gives really tell here, unlike many videos. As to how long he has had this rig going in this configuration without significant problems is testament to it's layout as well. Durable, hard running Detroits and drivetrain that exceeds need. Fine machine.

Those 2 stroke Detroits are doing what they did best, converting fuel into noise! Started out with a 6-71 Detroit 238 with a 4x4 Spicer in an old Binder with 44,000 lb Hendrickson walking beam suspension and a Bostrom spring ride seat. When I did finally manage to get it up to road speed I spent more time in the air then in the seat. That is a great deal of ingenuity to create something like this machine when it was done although it wouldn’t be very useful in the 40 acre fields I grew up working.

Considering the prices of new machines today, this is incredible! Less than 20% of the cost of a new machine and still able to keep up with them, not sure the extra 80% is worth the tidier cab interior or a tighter turning circle :)

What this tractor needs more than anything is a balancing mechanism so that each engine is pulling equally. The inventor might not think this is important but will show up in sticky situations rapidly. Not sure if it floods there but have never seen a growing area not flood. To balance it two dials for manifold pressure or a torque sensor in the drive train would balance these out so one was not doing it's share thus wearing out say the front engine which is blowing more coal. It needs two large throttle quadrants with large handles to more accurately balance the forces. The front engine could have a large marine wireless throttle to control it better. As the force of tractor weight is shifted rearward the throttles need adjusted accordingly to reduce wheel spin. It probably needs a slip indicator like new John deeres have.

great being able to run off one engine for fuel saving, or 2 engines for full power (better than complicated cylinder shutdown and common rail problems, though dealing with those levers would get old fast).

As a retired farmer and student of Ag. Engineering this video is very interesting. The workmanship on this tractor is excellent and the layout very simplified. It looks well balanced and seems to ride very smoothly. I had a chance to tour Australia in 1990 and was very impressed with your country and the large agricultural operations. The Chamberlin tractor must have a pretty stout drive train to handle the extra horsepower. Very interesting that the Chamberlin looks similar to a standard IH of the fifties but was actually bought by Deere.
As for the people that pasted the negative comments, they have no idea of the hours spent in the shop with welder and tools to create such a well built, home built tractor. And for the guy that said the bank owned the tractor, he has missed the whole concept of home engineering and building, as this is why the bank doesn't own it. Great job and video.

Why does the front engine smoke? Looks to me that the front engine is doing more work than the rear engine.

      It's a diesel. Diesels smoke.

I had no sound on, but it's probably set at a higher rev to "straighten out" the tractor and to make turning less problematic.

@@PAI93 I'm thinking it's better to have the front pulling slightly harder than the back pushing slightly harder 🤔 that's my theory anyway ....

wow, lol, 671's. Snotty old buggers. i used to play with an old 671 when we were running our Jaw off one. Almost bulletproof those things.

A crusher about 25 miles from here had a 6-101 on a cone'. It died and they got a 6-71. It wouldn't even tighten the belts compared to the 101. They ended up getting an 8V-71 which was a 318 most likely. You could hear it at the courthouse at the county seat like it was in your back yard and it was about 7 miles away. Straight pipes back then. No wonder I'm deaf!

jdr ok True, or 350's, depending on the setup. That one was before the 350 setup was around much, at least around here anyway.

+Lewie McNeely true but werent those the turbo models?

    • @lewiemcneely9143
      @lewiemcneely9143 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

jdr ok The old 318's were non-turbo, at least the ones I was around were. Maybe I was around an 8-V that was lower h.p. and needed the blower to bvering it up to a full 318. G.M. had a LOT of variations on their stuff. You could go up or down on the same setup by swapping some stuff around. Swap ends, swap sides, swap rotation, a one size fits all deal.

This guy has the same type of thinking as the legendary Robert Le Tourneau ~ if you need it, build it. He said he liked his Chaimberlain tractors which was definitely a great product. I loved riding on my dad's Chamberlain tractor on the oat and barley fields of Western Australia fifty years ago. The Chaimberlain was so cool with a bench seat where my dad brother and I could all sit comfortably. It was mean and powerful too, but not as mean and powerful this farm built (by a genius) twelve wheeled twin 671 Detroit Engined 18Ton Chamberlain Tractor. Necessity is such a motivator for great inventions.

Is this in western NSW Australia? Ah Naracoorte, he just mentioned that at 4:45, so South Australia, that soil is very unusual, in fact I think I can see limestone lying around in it. Great bit of machinery, the bloke must have some German or Scot ancestry. Thanks.

Thanks for posting this video. My father would have absolutely loved to see this, since he modified many tractors for farmers over the years to suit them for specific tasks, and he would have enjoyed the quality of craftsmanship evident in this creation, obviously a labor of love. I hope that you enjoy it for a long time.

Cool. I'd love to see what numbers it would put up on a dyno for torque & horsepower. Love the specs of the seeder and how many acres per hour it can plant. Truly astonishing!

Be a bit too much of a nightmare here in North Dakota to use that! It's never good when your seeder is taller than the tractor. Put that thing in any sort of wet field conditions and its going to turn into a mud bogging stuck SOB real quick!
