Thank you for giving Tom a chance. So many prejudge Tom because of the way he looks -'Tryna judge your engine by your paint job' is how Tom puts it. Tom's music starts conversations, conversations we aren't having but need to, badly. His fan base is called Hang Over Gang or HOG, but we're more like a family.
Tom is Canadian but has lived in Los Angeles for the past 11 years, 7 with his girlfriend, Nova Rockafeller, also a Canadian and an artist herself. She directs, shoots and edits all his videos. People call him a conscious rapper, but I don't think Tom likes to be labeled. He just pays attention to what's going on and points out the hypocrisy he sees, from both sides. He's a true artist, using his voice to get his message out. Being 💯 independent, he has the freedom to do that. He has no label, no manager, no distributor; no marketing team, he does everything himself from his house, including producing all his own beats, with Nova, his parents, his sister, her husband and a couple of friends as his whole team. He's also getting his dual citizenship and soon will be a Canadian- American if he hasn’t already. For political style songs, I suggest Brainwashed and The System. To get to know more about Tom, then I Don't Care and Sober. For bar heavy songs, No Response and Hangman. Emotional songs would be Ghost and Famous. I'll stop there or I could go on forever, Tom's catalog is deep, both in numbers and content. #HangOverGang #ACAL #NovaRockafeller

Give Tom more time. He’s sarcastic, witty, factual and he always points out the hypocrisy that is in the country. When you said people judge you about your looks…. Watch “This house”, “Castles” and maybe even “Best rapper Ever”. He has built up a fan base of people from all generations, skin color, backgrounds, lifestyles… because of what he has been through. He’s a good rabbit hole to follow.
Also the line Adam says about being American- if you live in America, you are American. That is your citizenship. It doesn’t make you lose your other culture or place of origin. You can hate the Government the United States has and still appreciate the Freedoms that come from this country. ❤ That’s another message from Tom in his song “America”.

I do have to say that black's are more racist to black's, why more then a white man ever can think of being. Blacks will be racist against another blacks just because of the blackness of there skin, or the block they grow up on. It even gets worse then that. Just keeping it real! There should never be racism, but until racism is no longer handed down to the next generation it will never stop. I'll tell you where my bit of racism originated..
Growing up, black people were some of my favorite people; In Living Color was the best sketch comedy ever (still is), Martin was my favorite show(Mm,loved me some Tisha Campbell too😅), my idol was Mark Henry, especially during his Olympic trials, then when he joined WWF/WWE
Now, when it started, I was watching a program on TV and thwre was a black man yelling about how I'm evil because I'm white and that I'll never be as good at anything as black people. Then I heard it again elsewhere.. suddenly, all these black people I loved, I saw as people who hate me because I'm white.
Kinda hard to love someone you believe hates you, so I just stayed clear of liking black people.
I never went out of my way to hate them, just chose to not associate with them.
Been trying to undo it for a few years now. It dawned on me that, if there are white people I fully disagree with, then there must be black people who fully disagree with those hateful men. I couldn't judge a race by the actions and statements of a couple people, just as I didn't want to be judged as if I were the same as the Klan.
Love doesn't always breed love, but hate always breeds hate.
Still many prejudices that I have to let go of, aone of which I'm probably not even aware of yet.

Although think need look at Fryer, Jr., the youngest African American ever to be awarded tenure at Harvard, came upon what he would call the “most surprising result of my career.” In a study of racial differences in the use of force by police officers, Fryer found that Black and Hispanic civilians were no more likely than white civilians to be killed. I can longer remember his name or what he looked like but when I was in kindergarten my best friend was a black kid in my class. I still remember being upset for years that I couldn't go over to his house or him come over to play at mine (We moved many hours away and lost touch). It wasnt until I was probably 10 years old that I realized he was black. It was when I received some racist comments at school that I even learned about racism. I'm late to your reaction here.
I can't speak as a racist but I believe that racism grows out of bigotry (they are different, or used to be). A bigot has misconceptions/relies on stereo types to classify people. A racist has cemented his/her acceptance of those misconceptions/stereo types in his or her mind and will be very hard pressed to ever think on them again other than to 'know' they are true. A racist might 'know' that blacks have more bones in their feet or are more violent (first is untrue and second comes down to a subset of culture AND is not totally based on race but when that racist thinks about it, anyone with a certain amount of melanin fits squarely into that 'truth'). Heck, in a bad neighborhood the number of thugs are far outnumbered by the number of regular people just trying to get by and live. I find it sad that a few bad apples keep victimizing certain neighborhoods. That's why I was never down with the 'defund the police' movement. All that does is further victimize those neighborhoods that are already hurting. Now, if we talk about reform or MORE funds for better training, I'll listen. That, unfortunately, is not what was pushed here in Minneapolis.

Tom has a wild back story.
I apologize for this long post. Some of your comments reminded me so much of myself, I got comment diarrhea (gross symbolism, sorry). I only share this with you as I am impressed at how well you have your head screwed on right and I feel you will take to heart what is being said (I don’t share this info with just anybody).
If any of my phrases seem weird, feel free to ask (I am a 65 year old Hispanic American - 2nd gen - and I sometimes use slang from when I was your age, a long, long time ago).
    ***Personal Opinion on Tom***:
I think part of the anger Tom has towards the corporate music industry is due him buying into the message presented by rappers. He wound up depressed, messed up on alcohol and came close to suicide.
He couldn’t pay his bills AND was evicted, living on the street until he went back and lived at his mom’s for 9 months, fully disconnected from the world, not even interacting with other humans.
He finally made his way back and has nothing nice to say about the music industry labels or the message they push to the mainstream. He will not compromise and had no choice but to be truly independent. His music is also his therapy for the darkness of the depression and anxiety - that monster never goes away, I know because I’ve tried to kill the one lurking in my shadows.
If you check out “Sober”, (th-cam.com/video/H5kt27itT4U/w-d-xo.html ), you will get Tom’s story. He is an open book and knows that keeping it 💯 helps keep the monster locked down.
His spoken word joints are also good for backstory.
As you react to more of Tom’s tracks, you will see why there are 3 groups of people that listen to Tom’s tracks:
    1. The haters. Never gonna change and the #hangovergang will always just wave🖕🏽🖕🏿🖕🏼
    2. The people that feel the same way he does and like his message and that he holds the industry accountable: See “Blame The Rappers” ft DAX (th-cam.com/video/30CDHuiRCrc/w-d-xo.html).
Group 3 includes me and many others - keeping it real af:
    3. We are people that have done battle with our own demons, such as alcohol, drugs, other addictions and depression. Many of us have even been close to suicide but we kept hanging on (th-cam.com/video/MDqKX_lgrQ0/w-d-xo.html). We still fight our demons but we refuse to give them power over us. While Tom’s music is therapy for him, it’s also a source of strength for us. The thing that gives us the greatest power over the darkness is knowing we are not alone. That is why we are part of the #hangovergang, we will never be alone, there is strength in numbers (th-cam.com/video/LuVPnW0s3Vo/w-d-xo.html).
Lastly, some things I’ve learned after flipping the bird to Death 3 times:
*: Life is full of absurdity. When non-critical shit happens (I.e. bought the wrong car part or the car part breaks), treat is as an absurdity and laugh your ass off at it. That takes all the power away from absurdities. Things like dyslexia are also absurdities (I have it bad but joke about it because, well you know, it’s ABSURD!).
*: Life is a grand adventure. And, just like any roller coaster, there are scary parts and there are the thrills. All you have to remember is to Hold On Tight and enjoy the ride. Substances like alcohol and drugs don’t enhance the adventure, they will however, muddy the experience.
*: You are not alone. No matter what struggles or challenges you may face, others have been there. There is no shame in the struggle, it’s what makes us stronger, like lifting weights. As we lift more, we get stronger but, there is a time when every weight lifter takes on a little more than they can safely handle and the ask someone to be a spotter, just in case. The only shame in life is when we are trying to “lift” more than we are able, to not seek help from a spotter. There are lots of people who are willing to serve as a “spotter” when asked.
    #hangovergang forever - for life

I have alot of tattoos as well, yet I'm educated and informed. I like it because people put me in a box and it puts me at an advantage when we actually converse. You're also right about racism being taught. As a white guy with two white daughters, when they make friends and I ask them about them, skin color isn't even something they mention as a descriptor. They don't even recognize they don't look like themselves. I wish adults could be the same.

Yes races come from other places but Black against White and White against Black is a money game and a political game to give the government absolute control! White could mean Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Irish, Polish Ukrainian etc…. Black could Senegalese, Eritrean, Ethiopian, South African, Gambian, Nigerian etc….!❤👵🏽✌🏾

Everyday is a blessing. Believing the news, if you want the actual facts on police shooting bias and how much is there, any Dr. Roland Fryer interview is awesome. The man went into police protection after publishing. The man’s story is great. Facts don’t always change views, but at least the info is there.

In society today it IS okay to be racist so long as that racism is directed toward white folks. You can be as racist toward white people as you want to be with ZERO negative repercussions for you. This may be shocking news for you, but it's the truth nonetheless.
Anyway, welcome to Tom MacDonald. We're happy to have you here with us.

Easy answer- you can love your country but still not trust the govt.
As far as race goes, none of us are really different, besides the minor variances in skin shades. That's all that is though, is just variances. I think the way we are raised is why we see see differences when it comes to those shades of color. Speaking as a white guy, I think the modern black pop culture has given rise to negative stereotypes of black people, mostly due to the music that glorifies misogyny, violence against other black people, broken homes, using and trafficking drugs, drinking alcohol excessively. There's a lot of white folks who haven't grown up around a lot of black folks like I did, who only know what they hear in hiphop, and what they see on the news and in movies. This is a terrible thing, because thats not what the majority of black folks are about. Most people, regardless of our skin tone, just want to live a good life, work and take care of our families. We have let the govt and pop culture tell us we're different, when we have SO SO much in common.❤

Damn if that's what you think about cops you also have trauma. Just cuz a cop has a bad day doesn't mean he's going to look for a black person to kill. Maybe I misunderstood you

I think there are physical differences between races due to populations originating from different geographic locations, but I don't think that makes any one race superior to any other.
I feel like it's more an issue of different beliefs/culture.
Some people are less open minded than others (and can't fathom seeing things from a different perspective), so when something goes against their ingrained beliefs, anything associated with that difference is perceived as wrong/evil...so a whole race is maligned for a belief. 😔
You would think that in today's society and so many with mixed backgrounds, we would have gotten past all this racial bs. No one's hands are clean when it comes to the past, and there aren't many in the US who can say they are one true race. Everyone has a black, white, Asian, Hispanic, or Native American ancestor in the roots of their family tree somewhere....and these days, there are people from the Pacific Islands and Middle East too.
My family has all of these races except for the
people from the Middle East, however....with 7 Grandkids, there's a good chance one will join the family in the next few years. 😜

you said that as a POC, every day you come home is every day is a blessing, and u said that if you encountered a police officer on their bad day. But don't you think that you have a higher chance of not making it home because of gang violence? I think gang shootings involving innocent bystanders is probably higher probability.

Want to react to residential schools in Canada and the United States.
I just want to know where black, Asians, Mexicans, and all the other races were when residential schools were going on? When was the last residential school close? Then, compare it to when did slavery ended in the United States and Canada? Then ask yourself, why haven't your family stand up against residential schools if they knew how racism felt or why didn't they stand up against it. Or were they too busy enjoying their freedom first?

Not that I ever cared when I saw someone with tatts, but Tom really changed my perspective on tatts. I wouldn't personally want to be covered with tatts but understand & appreciate the art, expression & meanings of tatts. I've never cared about anyone's race and don't pretend to understand all cultures. I'm always respectful to all people regardless of race, class, gender, etc. As a white person, I have experienced racism a few times but not on a large scale nor frequent basis. I just think there will always be racist small minded people.
