    Thanks Mike. I watch your videos while I make coffee in the morning and instead of going to work, I wish I was in the field photographing with you. Thanks for the escape - thanks for the effort!!

    Mike, I'm finding your experiences in the hides very interesting. I shoot from a hide sometimes in our backyard and have some beautiful pictures of whitetail deer, groundhogs and an assortment of birds. Presently it is too hot for an enclosed hide so I built a "Hollywood" stage for birds on our back porch and early in the morning and late in the evening I shoot there. I use potted flowers and limbs and sticks that I've picked up and sprinkle a few peanut bits where I want the birds to land and eat. They are only a few feet from me so I often have to dial my 80-400 lens back to 300 or less. It all fun and my audience seems to love the images. Thanks for taking me along on your photography adventures. I get a lot of inspiration from your experiences.

    Great vlog Mike.
    I had trouble taking my Photography gear on board to Cyprus a few years ago, so I feel your frustration at times. Good to see that you usually have no issues these days.
    Some cracking Marsh Harrier footage & images there, and loved the Stone Curlews in part 1 too.
    Fantastic stuff.
    I have also made an enquiry with Rene & mentioned that it came via your recommendation, so thank you for that too.
    Look forward to part 3.
    Keep on keeping on!
    Best,
    Nick

    Mike you can disable the lens clutch and still keep MF override- AF settings ; enable MF then CAF+MF and SAF+MF appear in the AF menu, I set focus peaking to high and yellow to aid the MF. In this mode you can use the lens focus ring when in the AF position

      Thanks Mike good tip !

      Sorry Mike gave a bit of wrong tip,
      Disable MF clutch, AF menu 6
      aF + MF, AF menu 1
      When lens in MF position you can use AF but MF disabled
      When lens in AF position you have MF over-ride to AF by twisting focus ring
      I find the highlight peaking invaluable when using Video 120/24 slow mo setting with the MF override settings, you get a yellow band where your focus DoF is currently at by twisting MF ring

    Thanks for sharing your experience! It's always a treat. My question will reveal my lack of experience with video. Why on the birds in flight video is manual focus used? Thanks again!

      Af on video mode is poor compared to stills. This is on all cameras as far as I know.

    Very interesting video Mike - I had never heard of El Taray. I think your A1 and 200-600 would have given you a wider fov for those interaction shots?

    Thanks for this Mike, as ever, very interesting and great to see the problems that turn up as well as all the perfect stuff. Rene is a great guy and indeed helped me out to find a guide for hides for Eagles a few years back. One thing I am wondering, in situations like this ,are you missing your Sony's better ISO performance when at high speeds. Please keep up the great work..Regards.

    Interesting video. I had simply assumed that because black and red kites co-exist over here (in summer), that you must also have black kites in the UK. I'd never really thought about it, but with the blacks being migratory there's no reason why that should be the case. I always learn something new from your videos, either about birds or photography techniques. Nice work!

    Hi Mike, just a quick question, what iso did you find was the best on the sony A1 was it close to the 1600 you use on the Oly OM1 ?

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My default iso for the Sony A1 was 1600.

    Great insight! Have you ever tried to use two cameras setup? I am wondering if this would realistic or feasible. To record smething on a tripod and then lock it for static frame and grab another camera to shoot some stills from hand. Or is it not worth bothering?

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only tried it a rare occassions. There are tripod brackets that take two heads and cameras too. Not tried that, but watched someone use it and give up.

      @@MikeLaneFRPS I can see (or at least I think so) that you shot your video footage with OM-1 again. Did you encounter some problems with GH6 or was it just inconvieniet to carry two bodies?

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@przybylskipawel I use the GH6 for video mostly but sometimes shoot a bit of video with the Om1. I can't tell which is which by looking at the footage.

      @@MikeLaneFRPS Well... I think I can see a difference. Previously you used GH6, now OM-1. Am I correct?

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@przybylskipawel No. I mostly use the GH6 for video. If I have the OM-1 on the lens and need to shot video quickly it will be with the OM-1.

    Did I understand correctly, that you can't use bird tracking in video?

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      AF in video mode is very poor and not able to follow birds in flight. A lot of the time when shooting video I manually focus.

  • @daran0815
    @daran0815 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Somewhat off topic: are those horrible big wing-flags for bird identification really necessary? They also carry rings, which to my knowledge can be read with good photography equipment and are IMHO way less of a hassle for both the birds and the admittedly less relevant photographer.

    What a great spot. We have plenty of Black kites here in Southern Queensland and the odd Marsh Harrier which are far less common. I use a Canon 1Dx Mark 2 and my standard ISO is 1600 now. My previous camera the 7D Mk 2 struggled at ISO 1600. Cameras have come a long way in the last ten years. Looking forward to Part 3 already.
