Riggs was so funny. What he did for tennis in America, by challenging Billie Jean King to a match, made a HUGE IMPACT to the popularity of the sport. Practically everybody was playing tennis. It was unbelievable.

I remember hearing Johnny saying that he quit golf because it was a poor way to break up a nice walk. Or something like that.

@@MrJoeybabe25 That sounds about right! He had a tennis court at his home in Malibu. I believe he entertained quite a few tennis loving friends over the years there. He loved tennis & his boat the most.

@@MrJoeybabe25 That was a Mark Twain saying (Golf is a good walk spoiled).

@ Joe Postove. It was actually a famous pro golfer (whose name escapes me at the moment) who famously said, "Golf is a good walk spoiled". The sportswriter John Feinstein titled his book about golf, "A Good Walk Spoiled" and in that book mentions the name of the pro golfer who coined that expression.

@ Joe Postove. It could have been Mark Twain who coined that expression, "Golf is a good walk spoiled", but I believe it may have actually been a famous pro golfer who originated that expression.

Johnny Carson defined "Excellence." He was a "natural." He worked at it night in and night out for thirty-years. Mr. Carson came on Television at the right time and departed at the right time. What can be better than that?

Sad that Riggs passed away from Prostate Cancer. I know he had his share of problems with gambling but he seemed like just a really nice, friendly guy to hang out with (and learn about tennis technique too!!). The guy understood all about hype and the media well before we even had the internet and social media and apparently he was not so anti-woman deep down either. It is touching to know that Billie Jean saw him near the end of his life and they both told each other how much they loved one another as friends...that's what you call real RESPECT !!!

Those were the days....A regular guy...loved him and his show. Just sitting in his bigg livingroom chatting...Not like now-pressure to do and be crazzy.

Johnny made it all look so easy. He (and Jack Paar) really were artists of conversation. That is mostly gone now.

Wow! Thanks for adding the second part of this video. I remember how exciting and big a deal this was at the time. I was a teenager and it was really boys vs. girls time. Billie Jean King went on to defeat Bobby Riggs.
Were they on the show after the big event to talk about it?

Riggs was a clown to a certain extent but just look how men have been eviscerated since.
