It's so good to see you! ❤️ I'm mainly focused on stopping the impulse / stress buying. I have enough stuff, more stuff won't make me more happy, or like you say: it won't make you a better journaler! I would always feel so much guilt after a purchase and leaving that behind is so refreshing. Especially not doing online shopping anymore has also saved me so much time.
Online shopping is both wonderful and a rabbit hole of endless possibilities these days. I find it really helps to add things to your cart and let it sit, sometimes with the shipping added, so I can see how much I’d be spending. Most of the time, I don’t end up buying it because I see how much I’d be parting with and realize it’s not something I really want.
That was a wonderful Video. I understand the "hoarding effect" a hobby can bring with it. I sew and knit and so it's easy to impulsively buy a fabric or a wool becaus" Oh i will use it!" or "it'll be gone soon" - and what I did to minimize this was making lists of what I wanna make ove the year, choose the absolute wishmaterial, calculate the costs and save up. Same with my journaling. Think i got rid of almost everything, and now it fits in one Box, and unfollow many channels who show permanently new trends and items - i use the german Term "Materialschlacht" (material battle, where you just buy stuff and use it for sake of having and showing) for this. It's quite liberating, and not so stressfull then to use the pens, inks and stuff your really wanna use.
That German term is so interesting, because it does seem that people own certain things just so they can show it off. Getting all your supplies into one box is incredible! I hope to one day downsize that much to a tool box. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm also on the minimalism journey. What I've done is make a very small basket of everything I want to use. I don't allow myself to get other stuff until I've finished what's in the basket. For example, I have four rolls of washi tape and once I'm down to one I add three more from my hoarder stash. I'm using one pen and have an envelope of ephemera. All to be replaced once I've used it. In the last month, I've finished four rolls of washi and two pens. This seems to work for me. Maybe it can help someone reading. Thanks again.
Love this! I love how everyone’s got what works for then, and thanks for sharing in case this helps someone. Washi is so hard to use up, but you’re on a “roll”. (Sorry, I had to)
Hi Anna, i really appreciate all the things you said in the video. Me too, still in a long process of decluttering and using up all that I already have (stationery, crafts and art supplies). All the excess stuff takes us away from the reason of doing the hobby in the first place and don’t forget that having too many options to choose from often not a good thing for creativity. Wish you all the best on your stationery minimalism journey.
I make a washi swatch whenever I think it is to cute to use and then I can use it and know I still have a place to look at it. This helped me so much getting over that saving for a special occasion feeling. I actually used up 5 rolls of washi in 2020 because of this. I am so inspired by your stationary minimalism journey. Maybe this helps others too.
Thank you for this video! I’m new to the fountain pen/journal scene so I do make wish lists but now I’m finding out - I pretty much have everything I “need” but my buying habits are more “want” or curiosity. I am getting to a point of scaling back so I can utilize what I already have and appreciate what I have. I love the idea of stashing away things you are not using. Great idea! There’s an old saying - “out of sight, out of mind”. So true! Thanks again! God bless you.
I feel like I just found my 10 step program. My name is Meg and I am a paper addict. I love shiny little pieces, old and wrinkled pages, pretty flowery sheets. I love to feel them, look at them and rip pieces of them off to collage with. But, I do not need to rescue every pretty little piece I see. Thank you for your support
I always felt like I need to rescue or preserve paper, especialy if I came across vintage things, but I’ve learned to detach myself, and since doing so, I’ve cut down on sooooo much.
Anna I love your videos so much!! Thanks for sharing! It’s funny to me because Here in Germany every child has to learn to write with a fountain pen in preschool and all your exams and things are taken with a fountain pen. The Lamy is the most common fountain pen at school! Also I saw you also had a fountain pen with the wider nib I don’t know the correct terms in English but in At my school specifically we all used those in 3rd grade when we learned the old writing style people used to use in Germany. However that was just to improve writing and for history purpose. Mostly we use regular fountain pens. Every German child has one and every adult will have had one☺️☺️
Hi Anna, thank you for sharing this video. I love journaling and books and I’ve acquired so many paper goods, supplies and books, that I really lost sight of actually using what I have and enjoy using them. I mean that’s why we buy our supplies, right? Your videos on stationary minimalism are inspiring. I can’t wait to get stuck in using what I have. Thank you! 🙂
Great video!!! I am coming to a time in my life life where I am tired of hoarding paper and pretty stuff. I started purging items last year and I don’t look back. I am actually donating more stationeries and books. I really enjoyed your honesty and am inspired by your stationary minimalism journey. Thank you for sharing your story. Blessings, Jen Morgan
I have not missed a single item I’ve donated and it’s the most freeing feeling to let go, and enjoy what I do have. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your own decluttering experience. It can take awhile, but so worth it!
I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about stationery minimalism!!! For me it's definately a slow process but I feel I'm peeling the onion so to speak! And I'm really getting to know what I like best personally which makes it easier to let go of things...! I love the idea of a small container to move 5 things into an out of sight location!!! I'm going to try that right this moment - thank you so much for this lovely face to face pep talk!!! ☺
Whoa I needed to hear this as I have a shopping cart full on at least 3 online stores. Lol Shopping for stationary is a hobby all on it’s own and sadly I do more of that than I do using. I recognize this but this video just reminded me that I recognize this. 😂 It would benefit me greatly to shop my stash.
Very timely and helpful! I loved your advice for starting small with decluttering. The journaling community is so acquisitive--just look at all the "haul" videos--but I'm seeing a lot of people this year talking about drowning in Stuff. I just finished a massive studio cleanout; everything I owned was getting in the way of using the things I loved. Now I can breathe in this room and my journaling creativity has already opened up in a new direction.
I’ve found for my personality type, I enjoy having less because it feels like I have more room to create and less distraction. That’s awesome you’ve done a big declutter so you can enjoy your writing more!
Good advice, especially starting small. I do small batches when purging or even reorganizing, bit by bit. I keep a small project list in my home planner that can each be done in half and an hour (clean this drawer, go through blank notebook stash, etc). Feels less overwhelming that way. Seasons of life is such an important point for any purchases whether it be planners or handbags.I can easily buy too much of one thing that I like (say notebook covers). Then a slight or big change in my life changes my preferences or needs. So limits and reassessing things I’m hanging onto helps.
Thank you so much for this advice! It made a lot of sense to me. My house is crammed with things that spark joy for me, but I don’t use most of it. Now I will consider letting go of things that most of the time I don’t remember I have.
Jennifer L. Scott who wrote the Madame Chic books talks about using your best things on a daily basis and that really inspired me. She also has a channel; it’s great to see more of these creators enhancing that sense of community and living with everyday beauty.
Thanks for this video. Definitely gave me food for thought as I've been decluttering my stationery supplies lately. Makes me want to be more selective in what I purchase in the future and also what I decide to keep and to finally use all the beautiful things I've been saving. Cheers!
Thank you for another inspiring video. I hoarded things for years and I think that's how I got into buying more and more instead of using things. I still have too much but I am really trying to USE things now and not fall victim to FOMO.
Another amazing video. Thank you so much for addressing this again. I think I get caught up in " evvverry one has this. I'm supposed to love this". Well I don't. And my journals are still beautiful because they are me. I gave up on the fact that my journals and workspace is not going to be on the cover of a magazine but when I'm not here any longer my kids and grandkids will love it because it's about my life and my moments. Thanks again for the validation.
So interesting to listen to this. In general I've always loved the idea of minimalism and living according to that, such as owning as little things as possible, every item should have a purpose etc. It was so nice to hear about your thoughts on stationery minimalism!
Thank you for this video! I love your idea about the basket and starting small. All I really need is a journal and a pen or pencil. So evaluating the rest and carefully considering if it fits into my core values and how I want to live is an ongoing process. ❤️
Love how you don't just talk the talk but walk the walk as well. I was much more intentional in my sticker shopping last year because I noticed that my stash was growing and yet my desire to buy more didn't dwindle. I ended up being able to hold off all purchases on Black Friday and only bought designs that I truly saw myself using. Although this meant that my Nov credit card bill burnt a hole in my wallet, at least I knew that I wasn't spending money on things that I just wanted to hoard.
Always know that what you don’t spend now can later add up for something you really can’t resist and love enough to purchase. It makes shopping way fun.
Hi Anna! ♥️ The whole time I was nodding my head to your video! 🙏🏼 I didn’t move nearly as much as you, but the times that I did have to, it really opened my eyes to how much I was holding on to. 👀 It was honestly such a pain packing and unpacking all of it. 😩I know my hubby and I plan to move again in the next 2-3 years, so this is really my time to address the clutter, stationery and other. I made it a goal of mine to actually do a declutter challenge on my channel along with some friends and I feel SO MUCH BETTER. 🥲✨ I made so many excuses for holding on to things or not using them. That’s not how I want to live my life though. Decluttering forced a lot of introspection and going forward I want to be very mindful of what I bring into my space. ☺️ I also use a wishlist and I laugh at myself about how many things I don’t actually want or don’t want enough to commit to paper 📝😅 Anyway, thanks so much for this helpful video! Hope you’re doing well! ♥️
Yes, don’t move with anything you don’t like! Trust me on that one! I’ve unpacked so many times and each time I find more and more of “why did I even bring this?” Your muscles will thank you when it comes time to see it all in boxes! Lol
I love your journaling style/aesthetic that’s why I started following. This series is great I’ve stressed shopped some this past year, but that’s ok I’m moving forward. I need to make better use of wishlist instead of just buying right away.
So glad I found you for suggestions. I've been a stationery addict for as Kong as I can remember. I have kept EMPTY pens that I loved in order to remember that I want to buy the brand again. 😳
I end up with too much stationary stuff because there are hoards worth of stationary stuffs in the stores in late summer, all on sale, and lots of things are not available any other time of the year. And I end up buying too many things.
Hi, I’m 3-4 years late in seeing this video. I really enjoyed watching your Onion Skin Journal. I haven’t looked to see whether you’re still creating yt videos, i hope you are but maybe you’re not. Wondering whether you have watched any videos on The Financial Diet channel. Love your guidance on putting five items into the basket! I also hoard papers & items is sentimental value. I lost my parent suddenly and unexpectedly when i was a young teen, that might have something to do with my “holding onto things”. You mentioned that you’re in Washington- State or DC? I’m in Victoria, BC Canada just across the water from Port Angeles, Wa State. Please let me know if you’re now on a different social! I appreciate your authenticity 😊 All the best to you, ~kari 🦊

At the end of the day its more fun to buy new stuff when you’re running low or you know you’re using supplies a lot :)
Yes! When I do buy, it’s the best feeling.
I agree. For me, it’s bc I feel zero guilt due to knowing it’s a responsible/thoughtful purchase - not impulsive.
That was a wonderful Video. I understand the "hoarding effect" a hobby can bring with it. Decision fatigue, it exists in sales and it does so in art, when one has too much, you start to feel the creative block. Thanks for watching :)
Moved many times dragging boxes and boxes of paper, cards, etc., behind me. Serendipity finding this video as I am finally going through those boxes.
I make a washi swatch whenever I think it is to cute to use and then I can use it and know I still have a place to look at it. Thar’s awesome, as washi is harder to use up. It lasts a lot longer than people realize.

Well said! Your life, your words, your journals. Sometimes I need this reminder myself. :)
This is such an important video, so thank you. Do you have a video showing what you did save and how you organized it?
Ive become so minimalist that I even use a Japanese floor desk now. 💕
