Yes -- Zep songs were different every time! They were never a "juke box" band that just regurgitated their hits. Each performance was original in some way, often incorporating bits and pieces of other songs -- theirs and others, from old rock and roll, to blues, to classical music -- all blending into the song they were playing at that moment. They were truly masters of their craft.
This was a band on top of their game at this point. I was at MSG when they recorded for The Song Remains the Same. Astounding. Watch the film and enjoy.
While their songwriting grew as time went on, evidenced by the epics they did from 1975 on, but for me, the period from Royal Albert Hall 1970 to MSG 1973 is prime, legendary Zeppelin, Royal Albert Hall especially shows just how great they were right away. Also, Immigrant Song opened the shows from 1970 to 1972, that alone makes me partial to those tours in the first 5 years they were active. Bass, vocals, Bonzo on drums and of course Jimmy and Robert's "play" with each other, NOTHING but PURE MAGIC!!! TOO much fun!!! I was a baby (literally!) when this song came out, so I didn't hear it til I was in high school in the mid '80's. Let me tell you... it blew my mind sonically!!! Every concert was different, and not just Jimmy. Robert would change up lyrics and add snippets of other songs. Anyone could take the song in a different direction and the others would follow. I like the Earls Court footage, try "In My Time of Dying".

You may have to pull up The Song Remains the Same video and isolate Dazed and Confused. There was lots of improvisation night by night with Zeppelin. The awesome musicians Page had behind him could adjust spontaneous to anything Page threw out there.
I saw Zeppelin in 1970 and they were awesome but still pretty new. A lot of bands including Zep would change up and add to their songs during a live performance. As far as the media goes....screw the media. They never liked Zeppelin or Rush as a matter of fact. Not until there were more FM stations that would play heavier music would you hear them on the radio. Some of the best music you ever heard never got played or charted on the AM stations. Back in the 70's most bands got known by word of mouth or by shorting their songs to make them radio friendly for AM stations.

Have you heard of the Eagles? Very multitalented with members like Glenn Frey and Don Henley. “Hotel California” is awesome. Every member can sing and they can render on the instruments, especially guitar, too.
Zeppelin was infamous for their improvisational skills. Both Page and Plant would frequently improvise, sometimes Bonham. They never played the same song the same way twice. This video is not just their performance of Heartbreaker but a hodgepodge of clips from other songs they performed during that concert. As the person who pulled this video together said in the descriptor of it, "My attempt to recreate the lost Heartbreaker sequences, using my poor editing skills and some clips from other parts of the movie." He was referring to the movie, "The Song Remains the Same", which is no longer available in full on TH-cam.

Watching LZ history with you would be an interesting experience. Led Zeppelin's peak? For my 1972/73 - 1975. The albums were fantastic but while talking about live performances definitely 73-75. While I regrettably never saw them live, I'd have to say this time frame '73-'75 they were at their peak. This series of concerts were turned into a movie that was amazing. As they got into the later seventies personal issues, drug and alcohol use/abuse were taking its toll. Seven short years later they would lose John Bonham and they called it quits.
Robert lost Karac (his 5 yr old son) in July 1977. I believe the band never recovered. Robert wanted to become a teacher. Worse yet, Jimmy and JP didn't even show up at the funeral. I've heard Robert talk about this. It devastated him even more. I don't think he's really forgiven them. And it's a big reason why Robert has no interest in LZ. For him it's bad karma. Maybe it's payback. Idk. 🤷♀️ And that was when Jimmy got deeply into his addictions and Bonzo went with him. 😞
JP's solos weren't the same every night, but he would build on the previous nights, so the solo would evolve. He would have "cues" to indicate when he was coming back to the song.

Jimmy is mainly just riffing in the A minor pentatonic scale. (practice your scales) and he has certain musical cues so the band has an idea where they are going. There are familiar phrases that he enunciates but in between it is a improvisational exercise. Each member of this band does the same thing with their instruments. Once the whole band is tight and in the groove, it is actually pretty easy to accomplish. Getting into a groove and being tight is the trick and the harder part.

When was Zeppelin’s peak. Some people say 1972, before Plant injured his voice. Or 1973, when they really had the swagger and attitude on stage down. Others say 1975. That, for me, was when Jimmy looked his “guitar god” peak….but Robert’s voice was suffering. Zeppelin music put so much strain and demands on his voice, he’s Damn lucky he didn’t lose it totally. I can’t remember if you’ve listened to any of the cuts from their live album How The West Was Won. It was recorded I believe, at a 1972 show at the LA Forum…..personally, I think that’s about the best official recorded show of theirs. There are several outstanding bootlegs as well, but that LA Forum show is hard to beat.
The video is not matched up with the music. That’s weird. I don’t recall that from TSRTS…. They did NOT rehearse this stuff. They flew by the seat of their pants all the time. It took cajones…but they thrived on the adrenalin and energy and the challenge. They detested boredom and so deliberately winged allot of it.
React to their very last (FINAL!) live performance: Berlin Eissporthalle, 7/7/1980. Stairway to Heaven was their longest live performance ever, at this concert. And Whole Lotta Love performed that night, at 18 minutes, was a preview of what they would've done on their 80-81 North American Tour, had it happened. Listen to “over the hills and far away” from the forum in LA 1972… the version on the “how the west was won” live CD set. I would consider this the peak, as robert’s voice was suffering by the time this was recorded in 1973. In this version Plant has to sing the chorus an octave down, while in 1972 he is still able to hit that high chorus. The rhythm section never peaked, Bonham and Jones just kept getting better and better. Page’s songwriting and producing talents also evolved right up until the end.
The MSG shows weren't their best, but they were the best filmed. Many feel the shows at the LA Forum in '72 captured in How the West Was Won were the band at their peak. That was the tour for the fourth album, and the band was much better healthwise at that time.
1977 Destroyer bootleg is my favorite or 1977 Listen to This Eddie bootleg but people will say their peak is around 72. you really have to listen for yourself with led zeppelin
I think their peak was '69 to about '72. That's when their music was the best, imo. I love all of their albums and have owned them all, but the first four, especially 1, 2 and 4, are by far my favorites. Robert's vocals were definitely at their peak at that time. Jimmy wasn't as wasted as he was later. Check out their Royal Albert Hall stuff from 1970 or their Danmark Radio stuff from '69 (the latter is very raw and just kicks ass). This Madison Square Garden performance is good but not their best, imo. Jimmy was kind of sloppy and not in his usual good way (his usual so-called sloppiness was actually just his particular style and feel, which people try and fail to duplicate, and which music critics didn't get but musicians and fans did). He can do a lot better. Hell, as a teen he was one of the most sought after session musicians in Britain. Robert's vocals were pretty rough as well, not being able to really hit the highs and lacking his full power and amazing timbre. Over the years his voice just progressively lost it's original mojo. Still good but just not as amazing, powerful and dripping with raw passion as in their early years. I'm not saying MSG was a horrible performance or anything, just not them at their best. I still would love to have been there... except older. I was 6 in '73 and though I knew some of their music and liked it, I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I did a few years later.
Have you done the entire 25 minute long Dazed and Confused from MSG? That’s very cool. Btw….you get to “know them” by listening to interviews and how they interact with one another. Documentaries are another way…and I’d be up,for that. But there are good ones and REALLY bad ones….depending on the motivations of the director.
To answer your question: Zep was the best there was at improv. Different every night. That's why they stopped after Bonzo passed away. Because of the mutation no other drummer could take his place. Best live band ever period!!!
Like someone else stated, "screw the media" and what they thought. I never read Rolling Stone magazine until the 80s because my friends and I just thought of it as the magazine that hated Zeppelin. And when I was in my 20s I realized they wrote the crap they did just BECAUSE everyone loved them so much. I think you can find those old reviews online. You should read them. They didn't just attack the music, they attacked them personally.
Funny, you'd think critics would get behind a guy like Page because of his incredible compositional abilities and was one of the great sixties rockers, too.Oh well...
In my Opinion the Bands peak lasted from 1968 to when they decided to disband after the tragic of the good friend and lynch pin of the Band 'John Bonham !!!....
Instrumentally, I like 73 as their best year, unfortunately by then, Roberts voice was already in decline. If we could take Plant from 71 and put him with Zeppelin 73, that would be perfection
Some of their best tours at peak: Japan 1971 (Orlando is amazing too), Summer 1972 in US, Europe 1973 (Austria and Germany - ON FIRE). I love MSG 1973 but they say they were a little tired and not at their best. To me, after that, they lost a lot of energy and cohesion, particularly Page. Plant also lost his voice.
1972 i think is their peak, plant still had his voice, but the band got better in 1973-75. this video is chopped up with footage that doesnt belong. in the "Song remains the same movie" they show footage of the band being robbed

Some of their live concerts were over three hours in length. It was improv city most of the time, with loose boundaries.

I’ve Seen Zeppelin 18 times over 7 different concert tours, I would say 1972 was their finest tour, followed by their early 1970 tour.

When was Zeppelin’s peak. Some people say 1972, before Plant injured his voice. Or 1973, when they really had the swagger and attitude on stage down. Others say 1975. That, for me, was when Jimmy looked his “guitar god” peak….but Robert’s voice was suffering. Zeppelin music put so much strain and demands on his voice, he’s Damn lucky he didn’t lose it totally. I can’t remember if you’ve listened to any of the cuts from their live album How The West Was Won. It was recorded I believe, at a 1972 show at the LA Forum…..personally, I think that’s about the best official recorded show of theirs. There are several outstanding bootlegs as well, but that LA Forum show is hard to beat.

The video is not matched up with the music. That’s weird. I don’t recall that from TSRTS…. They did NOT rehearse this stuff. They flew by the seat of their pants all the time. It took cajones…but they thrived on the adrenalin and energy and the challenge. They detested boredom and so deliberately winged allot of it.

React to their very last (FINAL!) live performance: Berlin Eissporthalle, 7/7/1980. Stairway to Heaven was their longest live performance ever, at this concert. And Whole Lotta Love performed that night, at 18 minutes, was a preview of what they would've done on their 80-81 North American Tour, had it happened. Just search the date and city for these two live performances which exist in audio only

They were trying out a new, harder version, complete with gizmotron and echoplex effects, for their 1980-81 North American Tour (called: Led Zeppelin - The '80's) that never happened for obvious reasons

Listen to “over the hills and far away” from the forum in LA 1972… the version on the “how the west was won” live CD set. I would consider this the peak, as robert’s voice was suffering by the time this was recorded in 1973. In this version Plant has to sing the chorus an octave down, while in 1972 he is still able to hit that high chorus. The rhythm section never peaked, Bonham and Jones just kept getting better and better. Page’s songwriting and producing talents also evolved right up until the end.

The MSG shows weren't their best, but they were the best filmed. Many feel the shows at the LA Forum in '72 captured in How the West Was Won were the band at their peak. That was the tour for the fourth album, and the band was much better healthwise at that time.

I think their peak was '69 to about '72. That's when their music was the best, imo. I love all of their albums and have owned them all, but the first four, especially 1, 2 and 4, are by far my favorites.
Robert's vocals were definitely at their peak at that time. Jimmy wasn't as wasted as he was later. Check out their Royal Albert Hall stuff from 1970 or their Danmark Radio stuff from '69 (the latter is very raw and just kicks ass).
This Madison Square Garden performance is good but not their best, imo. Jimmy was kind of sloppy and not in his usual good way (his usual so-called sloppiness was actually just his particular style and feel, which people try and fail to duplicate, and which music critics didn't get but musicians and fans did). He can do a lot better. Hell, as a teen he was one of the most sought after session musicians in Britain. Robert's vocals were pretty rough as well, not being able to really hit the highs and lacking his full power and amazing timbre. Over the years his voice just progressively lost it's original mojo. Still good but just not as amazing, powerful and dripping with raw passion as in their early years.
I'm not saying MSG was a horrible performance or anything, just not them at their best. I still would love to have been there... except older. I was 6 in '73 and though I knew some of their music and liked it, I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I did a few years later.

Have you done the entire 25 minute long Dazed and Confused from MSG? That’s very cool. Btw….you get to “know them” by listening to interviews and how they interact with one another. Documentaries are another way…and I’d be up,for that. But there are good ones and REALLY bad ones….depending on the motivations of the director.
To answer your question: Zep was the best there was at improv. Different every night. That's why they stopped after Bonzo passed away. Because of the mutation no other drummer could take his place. Best live band ever period!!!
Like someone else stated, "screw the media" and what they thought. I never read Rolling Stone magazine until the 80s because my friends and I just thought of it as the magazine that hated Zeppelin. And when I was in my 20s I realized they wrote the crap they did just BECAUSE everyone loved them so much. I think you can find those old reviews online. You should read them. They didn't just attack the music, they attacked them personally.
Funny, you'd think critics would get behind a guy like Page because of his incredible compositional abilities and was one of the great sixties rockers, too.Oh well...

Instrumentally, I like 73 as their best year, unfortunately by then, Roberts voice was already in decline. If we could take Plant from 71 and put him with Zeppelin 73, that would be perfection
Some of their best tours at peak: Japan 1971 (Orlando is amazing too), Summer 1972 in US, Europe 1973 (Austria and Germany - ON FIRE). I love MSG 1973 but they say they were a little tired and not at their best. To me, after that, they lost a lot of energy and cohesion, particularly Page. Plant also lost his voice.
1972 i think is their peak, plant still had his voice, but the band got better in 1973-75.
