RM is the master of doing that with their songs. So when they have difficulty rhyming in Koreaan they will find a word in the opposing language. He actually talked about that in a Vlive. He truly is a genius. It is also why many want to emulate their songs but really can't.

💜FYI - this is how they conceptualised the song: They created a very old and sad story called, 'La Città di Smeraldo' that takes place in a small town in Italy ( in the 16th Century -1500's). The story's about an 'ugly' man who hid in an old castle alone, even though he was a gentle good person, because of his looks he received lots of hate & cruelty while growing up. He never opened his heart to anyone. Eventually if anyone tried to approach him, he hid in fear. So he became bitter and angry. His one happiness in life was to plant beautiful flowers in his walled off garden.
One night a woman appeared near the man's castle. She jumped over the garden fence and collected some flowers. This angered the man at first. So he watched his garden all night. But when he fell asleep, the woman again collected more. This continued for several nights. The man pretended to be asleep and watched the woman. He started becoming curious about the woman. He began waiting for her. Without realizing he started waiting for her to come and each day began to seem a little brighter.
Following after her one day he realized that due to terrible impoverishment she was selling the flowers that she took from him to try to make a living. The man falling in love so desperately wanted to help the woman. But he was afraid she would be terrified by the way he looks if he approached her. He 'knew' she would never be able love his 'grotesque' appearance. He came to a conclusion that the only way he would be able to help her is to keep himself hidden and let her continue taking flowers from his garden. The man decided to make a flower that doesn't exist anywhere on the planet. So that the woman could sell them at a expensive price. He began to create the flower in his castle.
After many unsuccessful attempts, the man created the most beautiful of all flowers (The Smeraldo Flower) and filled his garden with these beautiful flowers. But the woman stopped coming. No matter how long he waited she never came back to his garden. He eventually found out that the woman had starved to death before he could give her the flower that would have saved her. If only he had been brave enough to approach her😭

The Smeraldo flower symbolizes the sincerity that could not be delivered.
The moral of the story, as interpreted by BTS, is that people are entrapped in the depths of misery and darkness due to a lack of self-love and confidence. The protagonist would have probably felt much better, had he talked to her and confronted his fears and insecurities. In addition, another aspect is the way people are affected by childhood trauma and dysfunctional families. The man was highly affected by his childhood trauma caused by nasty comments made by people.
just to let you know, the old Italian story is actually created by BigHit so its not actually a real story, it rattled my brain when I found out the story wasn't real XC

And I agree with your sentiments... i too imagine him hidden away due to an "ugly stain" (quite possibly illigitimacy as you suggested or maybe a physical deformity - both considered reasons to shun people during those times)... and you are so right - unfortunately there are many ways people make each other feel ugly both externally and internally until we fear showing others who we really are.
BTS constantly try to remind us that it is our imperfections that make us just perfect the way we are... Perfectly Imperfect.
And - yes - so many of their songs could be songs and messages to the self ( and at the same time can also relate to just about any relationship we have with others in our lives) The depth and application of their lyrics to so many peoples lives is why they can resonate so deeply with almost eveyone.

When I first heard this song, I was in my car on my way home from work, so I had no access to lyrics or anything. But the emotion of the song got me immediately, and when that "but I still want you" hit... omg tears down my face, no idea what it is I'm crying at just the melancholy of it all

During their Love Yourself Speak Yourself tour where they performed this song, Jimin got sick and his throat was so bad that he asked Jung Kook to take his lines if necessary. There is a video somewhere showing the audience singing Jimin's lines because they knew about the throat problem and Jimin cried. Another fancam (at still another concert in the same tour) showed Jin coughing after singing his lines. Also while performing this song, V was unable to sing and the audience was singing for him. That was a heck of a long tour. Anyway, thank you for reacting to this beautiful song, you always enhance my appreciation through your informed observations.

Everyone kills in the live performance, but god, Jungkook's part, and his ad libs are just something else
This song has so many "twists and turns" that makes it so gripping especially in their live stage performance. JK's clear voice is so haunting for sure!! My favorite part, that I now always wait for, is (around 9:48 of your vid) after Jimin lulled me into thinking the song is gonna stay on that high sweet spot, V suddenly came in and hit me with a darker tone or "color". The first time I heard it, I swear it felt like I got hit by a truck. I don't know whether this makes sense, but I don't know how else to describe the feeling. BTS has the best vocal line EVER, BY FAR FAR, for real.
Actually about jk's adlibs they're in the original song when jin and jimin do the last verses he's harmonizing with them. So he didn't just try them before the live performance it's already how the song is maid
Every member of BTS has a unique voice n are wonderful singers. Just as you mentioned I also feel JK 's is so clean n clear whatever pitch he sings with. He is an amazing singer thats why he is my bias 😁
this song is my top song by the vocal line. it really showcases all their voices. they can tell a story through their voices, i get chills and some tears when I hear the song and watch the video. Jins voices is the one that really caught me, and that note by jimin with how he held it. I think this performance Jimin mentioned his throat hurting and wasn't sure if he would hit that last long note, but he did amazing!
Jungkook's voice is so sweet and clear . And his singing technique is also high. But I personally like Jimin 's tone more , sweet and warm at the same time . I instantly recognize his voice in choruses even if they sing altogether. He is a little unstable compared to JK , just a tiny bit .
Jungkook is basically the most stable in the group, everyone else is good at stability, but Jungkook is almost perfect at this

I love Jungkook’s lower register too. It’s one of the reasons why I have a soft spot for his covers. Examples include If You, Falling, Sofa and Arirang (a medley of a Korean folk song performed at KCON 2016; BTS sings most of it but a few other groups perform the outro).

Oh i remember there is this one performance of the truth untold where Jin got his voice cracked Jungkook couldn't get a hold but to laugh but because they're in the middle of that performance and it's an emotional song, he acted emotionally as if crying, they're both holding their laughter and it's hilarious. that's the unserious The Truth Untold performance ever 😂

One of my favorite vocal line songs! And you're right, there is a story here: A disfigured man lives isolated in a huge mansion, wearing a mask to hide his face. His passion is growing beautiful flowers. He notices that a young girl sneaks into his garden and steals flowers. Fascinated he follows her and finds out that she sells them to survive. He's afraid to approach her because he's disfigured so he decides to grow a specially beautiful flower in her image that can make her rich but when he finally succeeds he finds out that it's too late; she has passed away. Deduce your own moral from it... 🤷♀️
Interesting fact: Jimin actually had a sore throat during this performance(s) and was singing through the pain. Later Jungkook had to cover his part and did so brilliantly.
Fun fact: There are two short clips worth looking up for this: JK (unsuccesfully) trying to mask his laugh as him tearing up when Jin's voice cracked, and Jin and JK laughing and forgetting to sing when V's voice cracked. 😆😂

maybe the girl is from higher society and not in the man's level or the man is too insecure about his life/personality.so he being lying and be a man with different personality front of her to pleasure her (that what the meaning of put a mask on )

No, Big Hit legit made up a whole story and went so far as to plant it online as an old Italian fairytale (Smeraldo means emerald in Italian). It's part of the BU and the flower he cultivated was the Smeraldo flower that's the prominent flower in the BU. You can still find it if you search for Legend Of The Smeraldo Flower. Tbh, I bought the whole old fairytale part hook, line and sinker when I first joined the fandom. 😆 They really never do anything halfway.
But I agree with you that the mask in the song is probably about the personality more than his actual face. That's my interpretation too. 💜
@@keimyer802 You and I are in agreement. Versions of "Beauty and the Beast" exist in many cultures, especially recent story telling. A story repeats and resonates over millennia. Like John's interpretation, metaphorical understandings of dreams, myths, legends, and fairy tales are part of our human instincts. "The Truth Untold" is a beautiful example of this. I can even see how this metaphor could refer to each member of BTS. Can you?

I absolutely agree with the figurative enterpretation (sadly even the part about the members themselves 😟) but John asked if there was a story behind it. In this case there really is a specific "fairytale" attached to the song and although it does have elements of Beauty And The Beast (many stories do as you rightfully pointed out) it is a separate story. 💜

Solo stans of the other members are jealous, because JK is the main singer and gets the most lines in the majority of BTS songs...he does the vocal guides and majority of the adlibs in most BTS songs. Of course the others do adlibs, too, but not as often as JK. Solo stans of the other members don't like JK...they think he has too much of the spotlight and they are always wanting to replace JK as the main singer with their fave member....which is rather funny, when you think about it because the members have stated that BTS would not have succeeded without JK, because JK plays such an important role for the group and has so many parts...
Sometimes when you are that good, it becomes an expectation that you will always be good so your contributions are often overlooked and taken for granted by fans. Also, jealousy builds from solo fans, who want their fave members to shine more.
A friend describes a typical kpop group formation as 'one gets the cake and the rest get the crumbs'. Not very democratic, hence the fanwars ...my idol is better then yours etc etc.Most people have their own bias ( mine is Taeyhung ) and want to see them engaged in performances on fair bases.Why four vocalists when only òne belts most of the song ?It is not about jealousy but fairness.

Meg is awesome, love that you added Opera V and John I loved your comment about V being a wild card in their solo projects, I love his voice so much, it’s really calming, he even can calm crying babies, he wrote a song called Winter Bear unfortunately it’s one he gifted to Army on SoundCloud, so many great songs the guys have written and gifted to Army are on SoundCloud only, so I can add them to my playlist, but I was able to find Winter Bear that someone made a podcast just the song, someone did the same with JK’s still with you, on Spotify, used Apple Music for sooooo long, but switched to Spotify because of both their songs, would love if Meg could put together Winter Bear for you to react

This is the song that brought me to BTS, I first heard it travelling to work with my daughter in her car right at the start of the pandemic, for some reason it just spoke to me and I have no reason why, I find it very haunting and beautiful. I had to find out who it was who was singing it and because i felt sad, lonely an having depression i had to find out what other works they did. I didn't know who BTS was..... Watching this live performance and thinking back to yesterday's Rise of Bangtan episodes. It's so crazy to think that Jimin used to be so insecure about his singing. His voice is so unique and beautiful! (Also, shout out to Meg for including V's opera compilation. 😂💜)
Most credits go to RM for the rhyming in Korean, English or Japanese. Even if the song is mainly written by someone else he has writing credit.
This song is based on the Italian short folk story called Le Citta De Smeraldo (although some fans also believe that the story was made up by BigHit specially for this song) means The city of smeraldo (its a flower). The story is based on a grotesque looking man who lives in his castle and closes off himself to any kind of love. One day he sees a poor girl in rags enter his garden and steal his flowers. He's furious at first but continues to watch her as she comes and steals everynight and begins to anticipate her visits. He wears his mask and follows her to find out she's sick and makes money by selling his flowers, so in a mission to help her he decides to grow a unique and beautiful flower that she could sell for an expensive price. He does not have courage to speak to her so he continues growing flowers for her to steal while trying to find a way to make the unique flower. But eventually she stops coming. He waits for a long time and then goes to the village only to find out she died. It's here that Jin's lines are important "if only I had the courage, would everything be different now"
The entire song itself talks about wearing masks as a way of protecting oneself from societal ideals and also from yourself. It forms a major part of their Love Yourself series because it talks about self-love and the courage that comes with it.

The story for this song, I had always been told was based on an Italian fairytale similar to Beauty and the Beast. (Except Belle dies at the end) But someone posted on a reaction recently that it was a fairytale that Big Hit made up, so I don’t know which is true. What I do know is that this song is about regret. The deformed man hiding inside his castle (metaphorical and literal) watching the girl he loves steal the flowers that he grew for her, wishing he could go to her and tell her how he feels, but too afraid because of his perceived ugliness. Then she doesn’t come back and he learns that she died and realizes that it is too late. His opportunity to tell her the truth is gone forever and she will never know. Jin sings, “If I had had the courage then to stand in front of you, would things be different now?” So the moral of the story is obviously to be brave enough to be yourself because if you don’t you might regret it for the rest of your life.
It was made-up by BigHit. There is no reference of the story or Smerldo anywhere until BigHit posted it in the flower shop blog at couple years ago. It's important to the storyline and has key elements in it that relate directly to BTS and the storyline.
Songs can be interpreted in so many ways, but this is a hauntingly beautiful song. I am blown away. I can’t help but relate it to the pain some of the Asian entertainers who have in-alived themselves may have felt. I pray these boys and all entertainers find people who will love and support them for who they are with no masks on… and who they feel comfortable being totally themselves around. I love this song so much! It is so beautiful & I love how it really shows their individual vocal strengths. And I also love Jungkook’s lower register. For some reason K-Pop is obsessed with high notes. PDogg one of their main producers loves the high notes, the members have talked about it before. I’m hoping he will use his lower register more in his solo album.

I think Jungkook said in one of his lives that he would be doing more with his "normal" voice (lower register) because singing in the high register for so long can ruin your vocal chords. (or something to that affect). I noticed in the recent concert in Dope, he intentionally didn't sing one of those high-note lines towards the end of the song, and gave a cute smile instead. Probably his voice has changed over the years too, as he's grown into a man. I'm really looking forward to his solo album.

It’s the voice that made me even interested in BTS. I’m really excited for his album too! Yes, he has a voice that just seems to pull at your heartstrings. I don’t really care if someone else has professionally more powerful vocals... it doesn’t move me as much as JK’s. I think the vocal line did brilliantly in this song.

Just clean, emotional performances from all 4 of the vocal line. To me, my interpretation is that the song is saying they would like to have intimacy, to touch, laugh, kiss, have romance & closeness like normal people & they are tempted often (of course they are, they are human beings) but they can't. Because of the K-pop "No dating rules" and to avoide scandal and not to hurt ARMY'S, but they still want it. Still have wanted people in their lives.

This is probably my favorite BTS song. We actually get to hear all of their lower registers and that really makes it stand out from most of their other works. I'm so completely in love with JK's voice here. All four of their voices really shine. I absolutely love this song. When V starts to sing I get chills. But by the time Jin starts singing my heart completely fills with emotion and I start crying. Then all of them taking turns and harmonizing. I can’t turn off the emotion faucet. They sound so beautiful.
And yes RM mentioned one time he mixes the languages when he is looking for lyrics to rhyme and flow and it doesn’t work in Korean.
Thankfully he is fluent in several languages.

Jimin had some issues with this song. His voice is so so pretty but he wasn't so confident when he sung it :/, not to mention that he had a sore throat basically this whole tour. He did better each time they sung it though and I'm so proud of him. There's a clip of him jumping around backstage because he finally hit a certain note that he had been practicing for this song, it made me so happy lol

There is a video of them trying to perform this and Jimin was really bad sick that day and he tried his best but his voice kept cutting out (had a bad sore throat). He just busted out crying about the same time the individual tiers they were standing on staring going up at different levels. JK immediately stepped in and began singing Jimins part too. As soon as they were lowered back down JK stepped over to Jimin and remained there with his arm around Jimin for the remainder of the song. Felt so bad for him

Poor Jimin was sick during a section of the tour, but still managed to pull off bonus high notes in this song. The Truth Untold is one of the best vocal songs from them, and always makes army cry.
Btw the audacity they had to have Jin perform Epiphany, just for the vocalists to come out and do The Truth Untold after. I can’t imagine the emotions in the crowd
Edit: the do the rhyme thing a lot actually, and I always thought it was so impressive to be able to do that. Just the thought of how effortlessly they can switch between languages flawlessly is amazing
Tbh my bias is JK youngest member you need look on him he amazing I'm 48 I've never in my life ever heard anyone like JK ever. He has over 40 covers listen to them all. He even better than artists he covers. Plus idk if you know JK taught himself all songs he knows all BTS songs because in case someone forgets or whatever he wanted make sure they all knew plus he background on almost all songs look it up I e been army since Oct 2013 I've seen them go through so much I'm sad they going military but it time they should gone back when covid hit but oh well I hope they all go in by March 2023 tbh get back by 2025 .. watch Jin astronaut amazing it just came out

This story is based on an old Italian folk tale. It was part of the "Love Yourself" tour. V killed me when he started singing Puccini's famous "Nessun Dorma"! (Check out Pavarotti's version or Placido Domingo.) My mother was a soprano and raised me in a heavy visual and performing arts environment. (7+ years of classical piano). I think with a little training, he might be able to pull of some opera classics. GO V!!! I LOVE it! Thank you for this great reaction and the opera part was such a treat!

The audio used in this live performance compilation is from when Jimin had a really sore throat and could barely sing. He'd been sick most of that tour and then this was near the end and he was a mess. I really wish people would stop using the audio of that performance because it's just not fair to him and there are so many better performances.

V is baritones most of bts’s songs are in either high or middle range his voice is suitable for different songs (not his fault and I mean I love to hear his beautiful baritones) and this song let him show abilities's shining and he also able go high note. I more like him focus developing the range he's comfortable with (he's very wide range) or surprising us like Stigma. I'll wait his solo mixtapes, I relate to his style music
