    We just got 15 of these peterbilt trucks up here in Boston. Can't say I like it for beer delivery. The shift device feels chintzy when you are jumping in and out of a truck and the adrenaline is pumping to have to be all finesse instead of pushing a button or slamming it into gear to go. I can see it being good for highway driving but we are never asked what is best for us lol.

    In December 2021, I worked at a company the had a Kenworth, T680 I seem to recall, with an "Eaton Auto-Shift 10-speed". Damn thing would emit a DING DING DING while in "Manual mode". I hated this!
    On rolling hills of West-Central Wisconsin I just bit the bullet, told my ears to take it, and kept the transmission in 9th-gear.
    Needless to say-I did not last long at this company...

    If you have the depressive break you have most likely a Gen. 3 or newer transmission some Gen 2 and all gen 1 still have a clutch pedal I have a gen 1 and automatic mode for any kind of hills can become a big problem it will try to upshift and blow the and then you have to start over from the beginning

    I took an automatic for a test drive…I explained I had never used an automatic previously could he drive. He said it automatic just like driving a car…mmm no it wasn’t. I’m researching now because I’m considering there is something wrong with that transmission, but maybe not. To pull away out onto the highway it was going through every gear making picking up speed very slow. I felt helpless with the automatic. This helps me understand it but would want to practice a bit too. I’ve used 18 and 15 speed standards but haven’t been in a truck for a few yrs. It was a single rear axle…

    Im used to manual transmission and drove an automatic this week for the first time.
    Backing was next to impossible for me. The truck bucked and lurched the whole time in reverse. Seemed to either be stopped or jump to high speed with even the slightest touch of fuel. Couldnt gradually back or feather in and out of movement like a clutch.
    Was actually dangerous.
    How in the world do you get used to that?

    Often wondered why you don't use Tri-Axle Trailers for better weight distribution in the good old USA, especially with 53 footlength (no need for sliding tandems) ! Also no movable headboard on flat trailers ? help to stop cargo moving forward ? Here in the UK max 9 hours per day driving time (but can do 10 hours twice a week) also 45 min break after 4 & half hrs driving. 90 hours max in a Fortnight (that's English for 2 weeks/14 days). good quality footage & interesting stuff you put out, cheers. Nick

    • @bassbone52
      @bassbone52 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The weight of a third axle on a trailer contributes to the gross vehicle weight, which, for the most part is 80,000 pounds here in the USA. This added axle weight means less cargo capacity for the entire rig.

    • @KevinDye101
      @KevinDye101 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Hawker I'll add to what bassbone52 said by letting you know that the trailers that aren't flatbeds usually have sliding tandems and are allowed 34k on the trailer axles, 34k on the drive axles, and 12k on the steers (generally), but most flatbed trailers have spread axles and are allowed 40k on the trailer axles, 34k drives, and 12k steers. Again, this is generally speaking and there are exceptions to the rules and specialty equipment.

    • @KevinDye101
      @KevinDye101 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yup! We used a hydro vac service and they had a tri axle straight truck that was allowed 80k total on 3 axles. Crazy that those trucks can take that much weight. Typically trucks that have 20k on their steers aren't normal tractor trailer combination vehicles, but dump trucks and other specialty straight trucks.

    • @passngas2733
      @passngas2733 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Hawker Some companies do use tri axle trailers for heavy haul and box trailers hauling between 80k and 100k.

    I have a 2016 cascadia and after driving automatics for 4 years now, I will probably never go back to stick. Yes there might be a small loss in power but the way my truck is spec'd I still pass 90% of the trucks on the road and I'm governed at 68. Anyone who still gripes about sticks being better is just scared of change.

I will quit.worst transmissions ever to back in to a dock.yes they are very easy to maneuver around ,cause you are not shifting. But overall, never like a stick shift truck.specially the super 10,with a N14 detroit.550 hp.no way an auto is going to pass me.

    • @DaleLClay
      @DaleLClay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your transmission "Breaks" as you say, it will be completely situational, if it will be usable at all. You can select what gear to start out on, up to 3rd gear, I believe. I am guessing as I don't drive this anymore, and it's been a while.

    I drive a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia with the paddle shifter as you demonstrate. I pull a belly dump and go in and out of a quarry that has a very steep hill (I would say greater than 10%). I have yet to find the perfect sweet spot to descend that hill with little to no brakes, with max weight. My question is how to descend this hill with no (or very little) brakes and maintaining less than 2200 RPMs. Any takers to explain this for me?

    • @DaleLClay
      @DaleLClay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, I currently run a 2019 moving 105K max loads. I have found that I have to take a slower speed when I head down hill and not have to touch brakes. If my speed is to high my Jake can't handle it.
