  • The Zompo lo Schioppo nature reserve is a protected natural area established in 1987 in the municipality of Morino, in the province of L'Aquila, which covers an area of 1025 hectares.
That of Zompo lo Schioppo is the highest natural waterfall in the whole central Apennines, second only to that of the Rio Verde waterfall of Borrello, also located in Abruzzo in the province of Chieti. In fact, its waters flow from a height of at least 80 meters and pouring into the underlying valley of the town of Morino with an intense roar.
This flagship of the reserve owes its name to the dialect word "zompo" which means jump and the blow that causes the water to break on the rocks like a rifle, the "shotgun" in fact. Approaching the waterfall on windy days this sound can be even more pronounced than usual.
