- A walk through one of the largest council estate in Europe, Wythenshawe.
Starting outside Asda, we head onto The Birtles, looping round past Wythenshawe Town Centre Metrolink Tram Stop. Down Hale Top and finishing off on Rowlands Way.
Wythenshawe is a town in the south of Manchester, Greater Manchester, England. Historically part of Cheshire, in 1931, Wythenshawe was transferred to the City of Manchester, which had begun building a large new housing estate there in the 1920s. With an area of approximately 11 square miles (28 km2), Wythenshawe became the largest council estate in Europe. Despite it not having town status, the Manchester Metrolink station which serves the main district centre is called Wythenshawe Town Centre tram stop.

What’s your favourite scenic route?
Grew up in wythenshawe, Civic Centre the place you walked through used to be bustling with lots of decent shops and an outside market for cheap clothes and shoes ect. The Butchers in the indoor market was the best for cheap cuts of meat. Now it seems theyve taken the heart out of the place. i left years ago its not what it used to be.
Yeah definitely seems like it’s a ghost of what it used to be.
Shame, seems to be the same as more and more places lately.
I’ve never been to Wythenshawe before. I’ve only passed through it on the tram. It’s quite sad really. I bet it was once a bustling town centre.
01:37 - There was no way she was letting you get past her! 😂
Yeah I can imagine it used to have a big busy market but again just signs of high streets disappearing.
Haha, I know! Sure she was doing it on purpose
Looks like a lovely town 🥸
Do you have to walk through the Asda to get into the town?
😂😂 yeah it is.
You don’t have to, but from that carpark that’s the most direct route
Wythenshawe is not a town, it is an enormous 20th Century council estate with a shopping centre and bus/tram station near the centre. Down-market shops are all it can ever support given the low incomes of most residents. There are some good people in Wythenshawe and some nice houses - the old cottage style council houses built in the 1920s and 30s, but social housing on this scale doesn't really work. It traps people in a monoculture where anyone with any prospects moves out as soon as they can.
Yeah I know it doesn’t officially have a town status but all the signs around do call it Wythenshawe Town Centre (00:52 & 7:05)
It’s a shame, they do have a big banner up in the carpark at the start saying they will be investing in the area soon. So hopefully the council can help liven the place up a bit and help the local people
