I personally don't drink alcohol, great tip not to drink too much! I remember two military officers (many many years ago) on Mount Ararat in summer shared a full bottle of whiskey and went to sleep. They were found dead next day, died of exposure due to the alcohol they had consumed. Now I know that is an extreme example, but it goes to show the dangers of what Alcohol when taken to extremes can do to your body!
Don’t forget you are the heat source, you warm the bag, the bag has no warmth itself. So a few star jumps or something to get your body heat up before you get in a bag will make a massive difference. Get in warm 👍👍
In very cold climates such as Canada 🇨🇦, we use synthetic outer bags to allow moisture from the inner down bag to escape and freeze on the synthetic outer layer surface. Works really well 👍 I also highly recommend mittens with liners or thin gloves vs insulated gloves for warmth. Keeping your fingers together generates more heat and promotes better circulation. My little cold weather luxury is to make a brew last thing at night and put it into a steel flask. Then I can have a warm drink when I wake up whilst still in my maggot :) I boost the insulation round the flask with two Aussie ‘stubby coolers’, Just recently my niece bought me a Sigg Hot and Cold bottle and it’s the dog’s danglies :)

Never underestimate a good quality cold weather sleeping bag. I trekked the Inca trail in 2019, one night we camped at 4500 metres, it was so cold the tents were frozen the following morning. At breakfast everyone was talking about how many layers of clothes they had to wear to stay warm, I was apparently the only one with a good sleeping bag as I slept in just my underwear and too be honest I was a bit too warm.
Used to walk the hills in Scotland in the 1960's. Still remember the cold due to the wind chill factor. Few sleeping bags available in those days. The main aspect of staying warm at night was to get something underneath the body and get out of the wind. There were few tents in those days. For some obscure reason we still loved the hills in the snows of winter.
Another fan of a Nalgene bottle with hot water covered with a sock, heat holders pads around the wrists and other areas 👍. Also suggest silicone boot covers to slip over you socks for toilet visits. Don't try and go to sleep with lots of layers. Apply layers when needed. Ill often use a fleece or down jacket in the bag if I've a "cold area".
I second the small hot water bottle tip, a boil some extra water for it with my last cup of tea for the night, place the bottle in the sleeping bag, makes a huge difference before I jump in it.

I use a platypus water bladder as a hot water bottle. Useful to have a small funnel to prevent your fingers getting burned when you fill it. Can wrap it in bubble wrap and stuff it in a stuff sack for a UL hot water bottle. Plus the water inside is still drinkable once it has cooled down.
I have had tramp foot so many times because I'm a walker and the times I have put my foot on a spongy bit of ground and beneath it about 6" of water. So I need to take my socks off when I get in my sleeping bag. It's the best way to cure it. I love videos like this because it's a life saver. 🤠👍❤🙏

Cool video with good information. I'm living in Bavaria and camped all over Germany, including the alps. Can confirm all that he said. Only I always bring lots of tea as well. Happy outdoors!
My favourite is the hot water bottle, I take mine no matter the season as it's the best way to get warm faster even on a cool summer night. On a winter night it's a game changer.
Ah yes Sprinkling Tarn, that was the first place I camped in the lake district back in 2010. I put my back out passing the tarn on the way to Scafell pike, I managed to get up the pike and back down to the tarn and enjoyed a good night sleep with the dog at Sprinkling Tarn. I should go back some day.
Very practical advice that there is no point in having a good tent and a warm sleeping bag if you are going to get into them wet and cold. He's right about the beer too...

I have the same tent, the oex phoxx II v2 and its amazingly versatile. A kind fella in go outdoors recommended it to me. I used it camping in the lakes in the snow early December and it provided great shelter. so if anybody is thinking of getting one, do so. Great video as always!

Best tip for staying warm is to go to the loo as soon as you feel the need, dont hold it in. Your body uses a huge amount of energy to keep your bladder warm.

I have one of these, it's a very good tent for the money. It's pretty roomy for me and a German Shepherd. I have a Gortex bivvy bag over my sleeping bag if we have been in the rain.

Try the closed cell pad on top. It's more effective than underneath. Air convection occurs in an air pad, even with a fiber insulation. The foam pad, used underneath, is likely to be much closer to the ground temperature, since it is only separated from the ground by the fabric floor, than the temperature of your body, which is separated from the closed cell foam pad by the circulating air within the air mattress. Physics is mostly a science based on common sense and experimenting with variables.

Love winter camping. Biggest issue is deciding where to go. Each location has its own charm. Of late my favorite is the Florida Gulf Coast where a good bases layer of sun block is essential. However in the deep short days of January the Florida Keys offer just enough challenge. Cheers and good health from the winter camper.
Great video !, Me, my daughter and her partner went wildcamping on Monday, it got cold at night ,5 degrees, my daughter said about bringing a hot water bottle and I always use a bottle to go toilet in the night, even in summer lol
I know other countries are colder than the UK but most countries are dry(ish) and cold. A damp winters day in my town of Wigan at around 2-3C can feel worse than -5C and I've been out walking in the UK at -11C and it didn't feel that bad.

Yes. They claim to be a meal but only contain 500-750 calories. I augment mine with noodles which adds a lot of carbs. They cook while the bagged meal is hydrating for nine minutes. I sometimes drink the noodled water if I’m short of water!
How I stay warm when winter camping. Pitch tent in the living room & turn heating up to a steady 22c.

One of the things I like a lot about your videos are the spectacular rock formations in many of the areas you go to.

Nalgene bottle makes a great hot water bottle. Put in socks to stop burn. In the morning, water (not frozen) for coffee👍.loving that headtorch.

Alpaca socks are great. I use mine fishing. They are warm and dry for 48hrs.

When I forgot my socks and my feet were getting cold I put my gloves on my feet and it worked.
I place a Thermarest Z-Rest on top of a ProLite and it keeps me really warm from the ground during winter months

I use a double sleep system when it's really cold. Pad and all go inside the outer, also prevents you falling off in the night
New pack! I very much like the flex capacitors. Very comfy and they carry loads really well.
