Here's the story: Daniele was trying to unlock his student Vanina's deep and profound sadness which he could not bear to see. Having been unable to climb out his own sadness during a loveless marriage and after his childhood love committed suicide decades earlier, he set out to protect Vanina from the same ending. Daniele discovers that the male community of Rimini had abused Vanina as a child at the hands of her mother and he proceeds to hide her away from an abusing boyfriend 'til they could steal away together. Of course Daniele succumbed, fell hard. But he showed Vanina acceptance and true love made evident by his sensitivity and that earth-shattering love scene (Velvet Thunder!). She was placed on that train for a short and safe journey away until he could gather his belongings and manage their departure. Then, the inevitable. A disaster ending.
This movie is impossible to find in America. And even if i did, you never know what kind of quality the subtitles would be. Funny to think if maybe I went to Italy, it would be in a bulk bin somewhere for cheap. 😢 Sad...
Beautiful film, but so so sad. Zurlini was a great Italian director, sadly neglected. He's making a comeback. This film is now getting some of the credit it deserves. Alain Delon is so moving in it.
