One more safety tip regarding sharp knives: when you are finished using them, wash them immediately and put them away. Do not ever put them in a sink or basin of soapy water. Someone or you yourself might forget they’re in there and cut themselves. It only takes a few seconds to wash them, dry them and put them away.
Also leaving them in water will cause them to start to rust since unless otherwise specified most knives are made of regular steel and will rust if not properly cared for since unless you catch rust just as it's starting out you can't stop it once it starts to penetrate more than the surface of the knife.
One more tip on knives or any sharp object falling: Please step out of its way as it falls. If you are wearing slippers or flip flops the item may hurt your foot.❤
Thanks Pam I always enjoy your videos. Love your calm demeanor and your voice. This is the first time I have been fussed at so sweetly. 💖 I bought my 9 year old and ten year old grandchildren cookbooks. I am going to share your videos with them as we choose recipes to cook.
Love my cast iron!!❤!! And don't let anyone but you handle it or cook in it! I once lost 10 years of seasoning scrubbed off because that dear person didn't know how to clean it.😂 Love you, Pam!!❤!! You always impart such good info😄
@CookingAtPamsPlace Pam, maybe you could do a video on how to handle cast iron. Lot of people don't know. My Mom would never touch my pans. Her experience with it was lots of rust!😆
I just popped out a Buttermilk cornbread from my Mom's (which was her great grandmother's) cast iron skillet ..... You can't beat a cast iron skillet! OMGOODNESS it's Sooo GOOD ❣️ ❤️&🙏 * I don't have a glass top stove, all gas here in these mountains & you get a "cast iron" arm after years of using them ...😘
CatherineCummings, I agree with you! It’s important for someone to teach us these things if we haven’t been exposed to cooking and techniques. I remember having had to be taught or learn the hard way. I went on to be an ER nurse that had toteach a young person getting stitches how to avoid a repeat trip to ER or, worse yet, a parent with a child getting stitches because the parent left knives in water or unattended. I was surprised at how often kitchen skills came in handy to do a quick tutorial for those that came to the hospital because no one taught them. In my day Martha Stewart was all I had to learn from. I’m thankful for her and now for Pam. Thoughtfully teaching and putting forth the effort for others! 🥰
Hey Pam , Back on the day girls took Home Economics. The first thing Miss Pope told us about kitchen safety ,Turn the pot handles to the side. A child's head is about that high or a toddler may grab. An F for the semester if you forgot in her class. ,55 years later it is still a habit to turn the handle to the side.
You have such beautiful, obviously loved, cast iron! Love your videos and your constant cheerful and helpful attitude. So peaceful and encouraging! Thank you!
If that handle is turned out and you bump it any hot oil you have in it could splash out onto the hot burner and catch fire immediately! I have had a grease fire and it is not a joke. Luckily we got it out before it spread off the stove top. Great video Pam.
My Mom made the best fried chicken in her cast iron skillet. She always claimed her mom made it better (lol). When my son got married to a non-cooker,she shortly threw away his cast iron skillet because she didn’t know how to clean, season & use it. I’m surprised he didn’t go ballistic. Love your show!
One more little tip about falling knives(I work in a restaurant and yes knives sometimes fall)…I have learned to always jump backwards a bit because they can get your feet too! It’s my natural reaction now!!!
I've always used my cast iron on my glass top stove. It's not an induction stove, but it looks exactly the same. I've never had a problem, but I don't drag it around. I'm careful not to scratch it. Also my mother reached for the handle of a pot of boiling water when she was 4 years old. She got 3erd degree burns on her whole side of her thigh. It left a horrific huge scar for life. It could have killed her. So she taught us about turning the handle away when we were very young.
I’m so happy to hear you add the part about letting the knife fall-don’t catch it! I’ve been practicing this for some time, but you’re the first person I have ever heard speak about it. Thank you! Blessings, be safe!
Thanks for another terrific video. I love watching your videos because they're so informative and you really make your videos seem like you've invited a welcome friend in to your kitchen for a cooking lesson.
I love all of your tips. Thank you, because the younger people don’t listen to Mama or Grandma anymore, but they DO pay attention to smart people like you on TH-cam. ❤❤❤
I recently had to purchase a new stove. My old electric Jenn aire had the heating coils. I loved it. I wanted a coil electric but they were crazy expensive. I had to settle for a flat cook top.. I HATE IT!! It got scarred the first day. Even 10:07 purchased the cook top cleaner which cleans it up a bit but not to new looking. I know better next time. As for cast iron, 95 percent of my cooking is done with them. All different shapes and sizes. What’s awesome, when push comes to shove, and on an emergency, you can use them on the fire pit!
It’s good to know that people seem to be going back to the cast iron cookware! I LOVE my cast iron skillets and cast iron grill!! I don’t know if I could make many meals if I didn’t have a cast iron skillet. They are good on the stove, in the oven, or if your out camping!! I’ve been with a Girl Scout Troop, about 42 years ago, and we showed them how to cook our supper in the Cast Iron Dutch Oven and then covered it up with hot coals, then we took a trail walk up and back on Miter Peak near Alpine, Texas!! Thank you Pam, I really enjoy your videos. The fact that you are grateful for each one of us means something. Means a lot to clarify for peps that are not as mature maybe as we are. 😂 💙
Pam your cast iron skillet is beautiful it's so shiny and I love using my cast iron pans for cooking 😊 and yes yes I agree!! The pan must be lifted not pushed around the Glass stove top as well as all pans must be lifted not dragged across the top
I have several cast iron cookware. I was given an old cast iron skillet that had years of use and not properly cared for. Turns out it’s from the early 1900s. I cleaned it, properly seasoned it. It’s my favorite skillet. Thanks Pam.
I love my cast iron and, I loved your tips! My mom had a glass top stove that could handle cast. However, her first glass top had instructions saying not to use pans that were not completely flat. Many vintage cast pans have a heat ring so the pan won't be fully flat on the bottom. She couldn't use those pans on the old stove. Love the safety tip about knives! Good luck with the award! Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us!
I love my cast iron-I have one that is over 100 years old-it was my grandmother's chicken fryer. I have various other sizes that I use every week. The best cookware ever that stands the test of time.
Pam...I need a playlist of your voice..it's so soothing..i have terrible Insomnia..i think it may help me..🥰...love your videos.... much love to you from NC as well 😊💚
You really covered some very important points on Cast Iron on a glass stovetop. I don't have a glass top stove, but I do use Cast Iron pans and stainless steel pans. What you said is so true don't try catch a falling knife.
I dropped a knife that almost went straight down into my foot. Since then, when I drop a knife, I immediately step back and let the thing land where it lands. It can stick in the floor but it is not sticking in my foot. I have often wondered if I could use my cast iron on my glass top. Thought as long as I didn't drag it, it would be fine. You have helped me have confidence to use my skillet. Thanks so much.
I’ve always heard that if you have a older glass top stove you shouldn’t use a cast iron because it doesn’t have the same type glass on top as the new ones. I don’t have a problem putting thing to close to the edge in my kitchen. I have three reminders. My very large three boxer dogs! 😂😂You are on your way to #1 in the Favorite Chef competition! We are going to see to it! Everybody vote!! 🥘🥘🍳Thanks Pam
YEs modern glass top stoves are the safety glass that shatters into smooth pellets when breaks vs. older ones that are just normal temper glass that will shatter into sharp jagged shards and cut you real bad.
Hi Pam, I have both stainless steel pots and pan but also cast iron. Cast IRON IS VERY HEAVY and ALL your points are ACCURATE. I have a gas range and WOULDN'T WANT AN ELECTRIC RANGE FOR MANY REASONS ! IN a power outage you won't be able to do anything as far as cooking. With a gas stove you just have to use a match to get the burners on. Yes there is a big difference but at least I can cook as I normally would and if necessary cook whatever I might lose that's in my fridge and freezers so that the contents are not lost due to no power. In times of disaster you might be the only one with any form of power and you will be able to feed your neighbors who have no means of cooking. I Must have a gas stove. If the day comes( and it will) when we are without power then we must each be prepared for how we are going g to make it. I don't like the placements of the knobs for one thing on electric stoves and I have seen how ugly the glass top gets after many uses. YOU don't have that issue with a gas stove. I have the covers that you get even at Walmart to keep the area around the eyes clean and protected. My unit us black and stainless steel and you gotta keep it clean after every use especially if you spilled anything. The knobs on an electric stove is far at the back for shorter stature people making it difficult to reach if you have to make adjustments while your cooking. You would have to reach the knobs over anything your cooking and that in itself I think is not safe. Having an alternative means of cooking is a MUST HAVE. A counter top propane operated stove like what you would use camping out is something EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE at least one. I purchased several JUST IN CASE WITH EXTRA PROPANE CONTAINERS. The knives falling is another great point as well. Anytime my knife decided to come off the counter I jumped back instantly and a few times it landed point on the floor😢😢. It could have been my foot. If gas or electricity is lost at least I can still cook and make believe im in in the out doors somewhere camping, which would be my back yard. But to each his own like they say... I just think it's wise to be prepared... you never know !!!
And get your feet out of the way when that knife is falling lol, thank you chef Pam, I love my cast iron and I use it on my glass stove. And yes, glass tops will continue to cook your food if you don't move the pan. They stay hot for quite a while. 💐💐💐
I use my cast iron almost daily on my glass top stove. It’s an older model that I researched before using the cast iron. The manufacturer’s recommendation was okay to use BUT NOT NON-STOP. I was also able to can on it giving some cooling time between batches. So far I have managed to keep it in good working order, without breakage or scratches. Thank you for the safety tips! Always good to have a refresher.
Good Morning ,Mrs . Pam . I agree with you . As the old saying is safety . Is the best policy . Thanks for sharing . All your information for safety in the kitchen . You And Family. Have A Blessed Day .❤😊❤
Glad you talked about not catching knives. I'd like to suggest you add food processor blades. I caught one and ended in the E. R. for stitches. Thank you for the timely information.
Much love to you, Pam💖 I do most of my cooking in my cast iron. While I have used small C-I skillets on the glass top stove I typically cook with the big skillets and kettles on independent induction cooking units. I find the independent induction cooking units more energy efficient than the big stove and generates less ambient heat in the kitchen than the big stove.
The cast iron will last for a long time and I also have people cook with the handle hanging out you are so right please be cautious and also with the knives let it go ❤
We have an older home with linoleum in the kitchen. In front of the counter there are hundreds of tiny slits from knives falling over the last 25 years and ppls feet not getting caught! They may be unsightly but they're a blessing BC we've never had a knife injury. The edges of our counter are rounded, not squared off, so too close and things fly. My dad is the number one dropper of things. I joke that he got some bad karma with gravity at some point! 🤣
Great video! Also be careful not to scratch your glass cooktop with your cat iron. I've used my cast iron pots and pans for years on my glasstop. I'm extremely careful with them. I've never had a gastop oven so i have nothing to compare. Thank you for all you do to help us in the kitchen.
Oh yes my old iron skillet on gas stove provided delicious fried chicken which everyone who tasted it kept saying how good they were, the best fried chicken they ever had. 😋

It is very easy to get hurt if you aren't careful.
One more safety tip regarding sharp knives: when you are finished using them, wash them immediately and put them away. Do not ever put them in a sink or basin of soapy water. Someone or you yourself might forget they’re in there and cut themselves. It only takes a few seconds to wash them, dry them and put them away.

Glad you talked about not catching knives. I'd like to suggest you add food processor blades. I caught one and ended in the E. R. for stitches. Thank you for the timely information.
Massive luck to you tomorrow on contest !! Been voting for you every day. You totally deserve to win.
Thanks for these safety tips in the kitchen most helpful I never knew of a smart stove but wonders never cease have a great day and God Bless.
I love watching your program. You are absolutely awesome.
This is very helpful. Thank you sharing.
I enjoy your program tremendously! Keep up
the good work. A H.
i so appreciate the safety tips - thank you!
Great video! Also be careful not to scratch your glass cooktop with your cat iron. I've used my cast iron pots and pans for years on my glasstop. I'm extremely careful with them. I've never had a gastop oven so i have nothing to compare. Thank you for all you do to help us in the kitchen.
There's no comparison to a gas stove. Gas is superior.
@@AmericaLives-r2m I think so too
