    His later songs like "Easy to be Free" and his slower cover of "Dream Lover" will melt your soul. Just absolutely beautiful!

    Travelin Man was written by Singer-songwriter Jerry Fuller who wrote it with Sam Cooke in mind, but Cooke's manager was not impressed with the song. "Hello Mary Lou" was on the B side.

    Later in his career he released a song called “Garden Party” in which he sang bluntly about his disillusionment with his peers in the music industry, who along with his fans wanted Rick to stick to his old formula and style of music. He wanted to do what creatively felt right to him. It’s a great song, and is completely different from anything else he ever released.

    • @woodysthoughts4032

      Yes, his "Garden Party" was about his controversial concert in New York City's Madison Square Garden.

      Yeah, it’s called Garden Party cause he was playing in “Madison Square Garden” and the fans just wanted to hear all his old stuff only!.. SanJoséBob

      Ricky Nelson started as a preteen on Ozzie & Harriet. My favorite song was Garden Party. His twin sons had a band in the 80's or 90's. His daughter was an actress on Father ? Dowling. Mysteries.

      One thing few know about the show, is that it was shot in their actual home. The huge TV cameras of the time were just rolled into closets between productions. They must have put the other recording equipment in a spare room or basement.

      Rick's dad Ozzie, a former bandleader, loved all kinds of music enough that he featured Rick and his music on several episodes of their TV show even when many still thought rock and roll to be a bad influence on the young.

    Rick Nelson was a big heartthrob of the sixties. His family had a TV show called “Ozzie & Harriet”. Those were his parents. The show featured them along with Ricky and his brother, David. Many girls swooned over the Nelson brothers 😂😂. Another blast from the past. 🌺✌️

    His song Teenage Idol sounds biographical. He was a fantastic singer and yes a great looking guy. He died tragically in a plane crash. The late great Gene Pitney wrote the song " Hello Mary Lou" A weird story about Gene Pitney, was his biggest hit record written by Bacharach and David, "Only Love can break a heart" reached #2 on the Billboard 100. Oddly the song that kept Gene from reaching #1 was the song "He's a Rebel" by the Crystals which was written by none other than Gene Pitney. How ironic. 🙃

    A lot of people don't realize that he came by his talent naturally. His TV and real life parents were Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. Ozzie was a band leader and she the featured singer from the big band era. The Mamas Cass hit Dream a Little Dream of Me was first recorded by Ozzie Nelson in 1931!

    He began singing because a girl he liked was super into Elvis and Ricky told her he could sing, too. So, he told his father, who hired the best session men and that was that. He has a super laid back vocal style that is his trademark.

    Jerry Fuller wrote the song and offered it to Sam Cooke but it was Turned Down by Cooke's manager and that is how Nelson ended up with it as the demo was pulled out of the trash and handed to nelson who was recording in the next room from Sam in 1961.. A little known fact is that Ricky Nelson used Elvis Presley's Backup singers on almost all of his recordings.

I saw them a couple of times when I took my son to the shows. They were not exactly my cup of tea but their shows were entertaining and they had some very talented musicians in the band. Their keyboard player is Paul Mirkovich. He has been a keyboard player music director for Cher and Pink. He is currently the music director and keyboard player for The Voice (US). According to Wikipedia (perhaps accurate): ""Travelin' Man" is an American popular song, best known as a 1961 hit single sung by Ricky Nelson. Singer-songwriter Jerry Fuller wrote it with Sam Cooke in mind, but Cooke's manager was unimpressed and did not keep the demo, which eventually wound up being passed along to Nelson."

  • @helgar791
    @helgar791 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This song was originally written for and presented to the great Sam Cooke. But Sam realized that as a black man singing the lyrics "Oh my sweet Fraulein down in Berlin town" had both the potential of making the song unplayable in most American markets and perhaps leading to violence against him. He rightfully, although regretfully, passed.

      In a way, you wonder if Ricky faced some unpleasant comments since the song deals with interracial dating in a subtle way, since he mentions Hispanic, Inuit, Asian , and Polynesian ladies. Black - White couples are not the only ones who get flack.
      Due to his popularity and being a nice guy, I think his fans were mostly tolerant

    • @helgar791
      @helgar791 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ilahildasissac1943 And I think the 50's continued to perpetuate the racist ideal that white men were kings of the world and could have sex with any race they wanted. It prepared them well for their sex life when they were to marry white women.

    Ricky Nelson got famous as the older brother of Beaver Cleaver in the TV show: Leave It To Beaver’. He broke into the movies and costarred with John Wayne in the movie Rio Bravo a 1959. This song came out just a few years after that. He had a pretty good music career but tragically died at 45 in a plane crash. Ricky was what you would call a “Teen Heartthrob’ I think. There were other guys like Frankie Avalon and Dion who were in the same genre.

      @@denisebranscum8044 you’re right! Ricky Nelson was in ‘The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.’ I had gotten the two mixed up. 😂

    This song was written by Jerry Fuller FOR Sam Cooke (not by Sam Cooke). So Sam Cooke wouldn't have earned any royalties from this recording. It was probably a missed opportunity.

      That was what I thought too. I think Sam could have done a great job. It is tragic how both died. A cute song either way.

    if I recall and may be wrong someone threw this song away and it was pulled out of the trash and pitched to Ricky and he liked it

    From 1957 to his death in a plane crash in 1985 Rick Nelson made a lot of great music, he was their at the start of R & R and was also at the forefront of the Country Rock movement of the early 70's.... I grew up idolising Elvis but I don't like 50% of his music, I love a good 80% Rick Nelson's...

    Too bad you didnt get the video version . His dad, Ozzie Nelson, overlaid images from all over the world while Ricky sang on
    their family TV show, on which Ricky would sing a song after each episode every week. While he's singing this song the images float over the screen, making that the first ever Rock video. I saw the original on TV in the show in the early 60s.
    Look it up and watch it, it's wonderful. James Burton, the guitarist was the same age as Ricky and when he started playing with him he was staying in the house with Ricky's family (the same house in which the episodes were filmd in Glendale, a suburb of L.A.) Here's the TH-cam title of the video : NEW Ricky Nelson - "Travelin' Man / 5K Upscale (Stereo)"

    Harri I pity the fact you and others weren't born sooner to have appreciated the really good music in the 1959- 1967 time span. Sure there were super songs here and there outside of that time frame but like classic automobiles you just can't improve upon some things. Like what you are up to but don't just preach to the choir get to today's generation. No wonder society has become the way it has!

    Ah, songs about women as playthings and dolls just waiting around for a guy...haven't we had enough? I know it was the 60s, but still.

      Boy he definitely would face hell for saying "China doll" now, especially with all the global anti Asian hate due to the pandemic.
      Feminists would complain too. But in the end, it is a nice catchy song. I don't find it offensive. Ricky boy was definitely a global playa in this tune. It would be interesting in a female singer covered it after all these years, singing about her global range of boyfriends. Might be interesting.

    This was the final time Rick hit #1, but he had 19 Top 10 hits during his career. At a time he was almost as popular as Elvis.
    I have to correct you on one point though. Sam Cooke did not write this song. Jerry Fuller did.The song was written for Sam, but he & his manager did not like it. Sorry..

    Harri .... I see why Sam Cooke pasted on releasing this song. At a time when White America's big fear was black men having sex with their daughters and wives this wouldn't go over well. Plus Sam was a former Gospel recording artist and the idea of him singing about financing women all over the world would of had him banned from churches...
