  • Wu Ji was composed originally for piano and tape with the Yamaha synthesizer DX7, all completely electronic sounds. There are graphic notations indicating gongs and bells in the score. The title of this work is extracted from ancient Chinese philosophy. "Wu" means "nothing" or "the lack of" and "Ji" means "polarity" or "the extremity." Literally, Wu Ji means
    the lack of polarities" or "beyond the extremities."
