In my opinion the only good thing about this movie is the cinematography. Many of the shots were just gorgeious with the pops of red in the forest etc. But my God the plot was rediculous AND these peoples' choices made me angry. OK so your husband got killed by a mugger or something, so you take your kidds away from modern medicine so they can die from curable diseases. You enforce their staying by lying to them about monsters in the woods. These people are committing negligent homicide every time a little kid dies. How selfish these people are.
It’s a bunch of people that got tired of the world and thought if they could recreate simpler times that they and their children will be happy. But the kid who had a crush on Ivy had mental problems. He was the one killing the animals. The adults were just dressing up as creatures so the kids wouldn’t venture out of the village and want to leave. They would continue to believe that the way they live is how the rest of the world is. They sent Ivy because she is blind and wouldn’t see the real world after she climbed the wall of the “reserve” the father built. Hope that helps
They had lost people to crime. So they decided to build a wall to keep the criminals out. Then one of their kids became a criminal anyway. I think it’s a great metaphor for the problems with “stranger danger” and xenophobia, but that’s just me.

But I can’t say for sure bc I was mesmerized by Joachim Phoenix.
