Dang Augustine needs an editor! Loopy loops of logic all over this. Wonder if that was the style of the times or if it was just him being overly flowery?
a lot of old or ancient writing reads like mental diarrhea that really should have just been a rough draft to edit and clean up later. Writing conventions, like understanding that run on sentences aren't good, weren't really a thing until relatively recently in history. It's a rare blessing when an ancient philosopher is actually concise and doesn't go in circles. I'm pretty sure there was no concept of a "rough draft" in the ancient world, or it wasn't a standard practice yet.
This is a good example of why even the best writers need an editor. It should not take this long to say "Rome fell because of a lot of reasons not just because it went Christian"
Yes, because the greatest theologian and rhetorician in history was writing a simple history book about Rome, to appeal to people with no attention spans or appetite for holiness. Fast forward 1000yrs and you’ll get all the humanist rationalizations you can handle.
love Saint Augustine
This is a pot of gold . Glory to God .
Thank you
Augustine makes a very good case here for why suicide is not acceptable. I wish I had read this 10 yrs ago.
If you would've only known then, you'd still be alive.
I was gna say that
My brother John committed suicide rather than suffer a suffocating death due to pulmonary fibrosis .
It devastates me
Over and
Over 😢

Define "the church".
Because the church I know couldn't have done that.
Some members of the church however, definitely.

absolute weakness corrupts absolutely, true Power destroys corruption
