    "Ownership" of Greenland has no effect on the Northwest Passage. The conclusion of this video is completely wrong. The Northwest passage is not above Canada, it's through Canada. Greenland's territorial waters make no difference. The Davis Strait, Baffin Bay and the Nares Strait are international waters. As is the Bering Strait on the other end. The Northwest passage is not. It's about minerals, oil and gas as another poster concluded.

    • @DaDunge
      @DaDunge 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +22

      It's about being able to squeeze it not about allowing passage. If the US can prevent travel whenver they want they have a ace in the hole. Canada having the ability to do so too is not really an issue.

      A week before it is Canada that he wants to buy and it is certainly not to have our ton of immigrants as a bonus: It is because he wants control of the Northwest Passage.

      @@cabaneencac5168Maybe, but I think it would just be a bonus. Canada's resources way outweigh any benefits from the northwest passage. That's probably true of Greenland as well.

    The narrator at the 7:55 mark is ABSOLUTELY WRONG HERE. The Northwest Passage does not go through Greenland's territorial waters. It goes through Canada's territorial waters and the INTERNATIONAL waters of the Davis Strait between Canada and Greenland!!! The western end of the NW passage is the Bering Strait, International waters. 0:50 In 1261 the Greenland settlements became part of the Kingdom of Norway (Erik the red, from Southwest Norway, founded the first settlement on Greenland in the late 900s). Following the personal union with Denmark and Sweden (Kalmar) the contact with the settlements faded in the 1400s. Nominally however, Greenland was still a part of Norway (later in a personal union with Denmark only). In the 1700s merchants based in Bergen, Norway and the Bergen Trade Company re-established ties with Greenland (Hans Egede, a priest from northern Norway, received rather lukewarm interest in Copenhagen about the Norwegian undertaking and a mission to Greenland - the Danes eventually gave a small lump of Money while the primary contributions came from Norwegian merchants). During the Napoleonic wars Copenhagen sided with Napoleon and in the Kiel Treaty of 1814 (dissolution of Denmark-Norway), it was stated that the dependencies of Norway (Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, were to remain under Copenhagen). The Norwegians on Greenland were given a choice between Danish citizenship or expulsion.

      Back in the viking times, whether you were danish, norwegian or swedish didn't matter much. The three nations people were so intertwined that some of our heroes still to this day, is debated whether they were one or the other. There was so much movement in that region and people settled everywhere they could find a spot. Language not being a barrier facilitated this. Ships going out for raiding, trade or settlement, would be comprised of all three nations. Reason why the first settlers to Greenland is seen as norwegian, is because the leader was norwegian.

    By this logic the natural ressources of Greenland is only accessable if the local population is willing to spoil their pristine enviroment for monetary gain - or if a foreign power is willing to impose hardcore colonialism on the Greenlandic people in a way that the Danish Government in Copenhagen has never attempted.

    • @fastertove

      Greenland can declare independence (the right has already been confirmed/granted by the Danish Parliament), but not before it is ready for it. Greenland needs to get things like national security, military, alliances and budget in order first, for this to happen. Afterwards they'll have the ability to join the US.
      Denmark selling Greenland is not really possible in the real world. Greenland hasn't been a colony for ages (we live in another time), and the idea of selling goes directly against decades of political and legal work. Neither Denmark or Greenland wants this, and I'm not even sure that it is possible now.
      Also, most Danes don't view Greenland as part of Denmark, but as its own "country" - one of three in the kingdom. A distinction not made in English, but it is important here. Greenland is not Denmark's to sell (this was more of less also what Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said last time).
      Neither Denmark or Greenland in particular are poor. Their economy easily rivals most American states relative to population, why economic pressure wouldn't be the primary motivator.

Greenlandic peoples would risk becoming a minority if powerful US interests could do whatever they wanted. The idea of having to adopt US customs, units of measurements etc when that's a step back from the metric system doesn't sound good. Lastly, what of greenlandic free healhcare and social services?

    The Northwest passage is much less reliable than the Northeast passage, which runs between the Pole and Siberia. It winds between a large number of (Canadian) islands and in most years either does not open up or opens for less than a month. This year was an exception. Further, the ice north of Greenland covering the northernmost version of the Northwest Passage, is largely covered with the oldest ice in the Arctic. It is very stubborn about melting.
