Enjoy watching the full Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games from July 23rd, 2021! We bring you all the moments, from when Naomi Osaka of Team Japan lit the Olympic cauldron with the Olympic torch to the fireworks going off.
The Tokyo Games were an unprecedented demonstration of unity and solidarity as the world came together for the first time following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic for an Olympic Games focused on the pure essentials: a celebration of athletes and sport.
This sense of solidarity was critical to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games following their historic one-year postponement, especially in the establishment of the Tokyo 2020 Playbooks-guidelines for safe and secure participation and operations. The Playbooks set a new standard for large-scale sporting events and ensured that everyone from athletes to the media would be able to safely take part in the Games.

@@user-tr6ut9xx9j Regardless, it can't be denied that Japan is the birthplace of an absurdly large portion of the greatest that gaming has to offer. Not to mention that Japan was responsible for reviving the game industry after the crash. Games wouldn't be the same without Japan. And media, including games, have really had a big impact on people's lives. Not just for being a part of our childhoods, but for shaping us as people through their wonderful stories and aesops. So I certainly believe that along with the fields of science, industry, technology, and all the myriad of other fields Japan has made significant contributions to - the field of popular culture and entertainment is one that also deserves to be celebrated.
Also I literally cried at them playing Frog's theme - Chrono Trigger has to be one the greatest games of all time.

There is a reason why Tokyo has been chosen years before.
It is by fate that they have handled the Olympics with great pride and importantly safeguarding all the participants over the pandemic.
It is really hard, but we are really proud that they have pulled it through. Understandingly, it is a simple opening ceremony due to the prevalent situation at that time but there has so many great Olympic and Japanese elements that is most important that is driven by ideals and passion that is highlighted not by any grandiose presentation.
These Games are the Games my country will never forget.

The overture from Dragon Quest that was played at the beginning of the entrance of the players and the music that was played with the fireworks after everyone's entrance was over are essentially connected. It is a very moving song.
And then they proceed to essentially Rockroll everyone at 1:15:23 with Robo's theme from Chrono Trigger.
imagine how much more amazing this could be if there is no pandemic... arigatou Tokyo!
Look up the original tokyo 2020 opening ceremony plans. You would be shocked. It was so cool and its depressing because that didnt become a reality.

I hope Tokyo and Japan have a second chance to celebrate the Summer Olympic Games, it's a real shame that the pandemic has robbed us of one of the best opening and closing ceremonies of all time, they have it all, ancient culture, music, cinema, animation, art, science, technology, nature, history, it was definitely going to be incredible, what we saw here was not even the shadow of what it would have been.
There was an original plan done by Mikiko Mizuno who directed the Tokyo 2020 presentation at Rio 2016 closing ceremony and she was suppose to direct the opening and closing ceremonies of the Tokyo olympics but she was sidelined by disgusting men at Dentsu. Which caused her team to resign and Japanese people are angry at Dentsu for what they done to Mikiko.
There’s was an original plan for this opening. Go on youtube and type Original Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony Plans and the video will come up. What you will see is really sad because those original plans was so well loved bh everyone but Dentsu screwed it all up and Japanese people were pissed at Dentsu
The pandemic did not rob anything, the politicians did in the "biggest public health fiasco in history" (Martin Kulldorff, professor of medicine at Harvard university; Jay Bhattacharya, professor of medicine at Stanford university). Give credit/blame where credit/blame is due.
They chose DEI over getting things done, that's the reality. Sad.

very moving opening ceremony
Idk why, but my most favourite part in this opening ceremony is in 48:50 where the intro video of the athletes parade, it is awesome to see the orchestra peparing to perform, sync with the preparation of athletes for the competition. The fade in between the orchestra and the athletes and the build up music to it is awesome.
I think so too.
And I love the diversity of the orchestra members.

I was really sad when I watch this Opening Ceremony way back in 2021. There is too much expectation for Tokyo to deliver a techy ceremony. But when I watch this again in 2022, I really appreciated the theme, the ceremony gave homage to our front liners and respect to the ones who lost their lives during the pandemic. At the same time, the message of the ceremony not only focused on peace and harmony in this world but also give us hope and reminded us that during difficult times, we should look at and take care of one another.
It is still great. I can see how beautiful japan is❤

Even if this is not the happiest Opening Ceremony, we can say they attempted to bring some joy. And I appreciate that.
I'm sure Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, NIER and Chrono Trigger fans (or at least those who enjoy the OST even without knowing about the games) enjoyed the Parade of Nations and could say proudly "we made it to the Olympics".

@@lesliecheung2003 The sad part is that Nintendo was originally going to provide themes for the opening ceremony (Highlighting some from Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Kirby and Pokémon); but due to changes in the organizing committee, this was scrapped.
I would show you a video explaining the whole original plan of the opening ceremony (In which, by the way, Shigeru Miyamoto was involved in the original idea), but it's in Spanish and I think it doesn't have subtitles.

I wonder why they didn't introduce the Mario and Sonic at the Olympics series in the opening ceremony... Those two video-game icons sort of brought the Olympic Games to full attention. The characters in the ring as kigurumi would have made it better; I mean, in the London Olympics, they had several characters from iconic British literature (Peter Pan, 101 Dalmatians, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, and of course the Harry Potter books) by having the antagonists appear as giant puppets.
It's so weird because, aside from the lists of the Parade of Nations and the timestamps of key events in the ceremony, now we have timestamps for the soundtrack and we're all here geeking it out hearing our favourite franchises' music!

The song that was playing when the United States (my country), France (2024 host country), and Japan (2020 host country) entered was Wind of Departure from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.
It makes me very nostalgic, for me it was one of the best Olympic Games in history.

五十音順ででてくるはずなのに、大韓民国とタジキスタンの間にチャイニーズタイペイがでてきて、最初は間違いだと思いました。しかしよく考えたら、チャイニーズタイペイは台湾として五十音順で出てきたことに気づき、鳥肌が立ちました！また、NHKのアナウンサーが「台湾です！」と華やかな声で言ったことに感動しました！

It also felt fitting that Japan entered to Proof of a Hero during the ceremony. Also loved just how many closet weebs were amongst the athletes. Found a compilation a bit ago of a bunch of different events where athletes were doing poses and made references to different anime
The announcers at all ceremonies were Georges Veyssière (French), Mai Shoji (English) and Hiroyuki Sekino (Japanese). Great job of all them 😊
