  • A line of cities stretching from San Antonio to Winnipeg marks a cutoff of population, with 80% of Americans living on one side, and a mere 20% on the other. Today on That Is Interesting, we explore population patterns such as this across the globe.

the fact that less people live out west has nothing to do with availability of water or natural resources
it's because places lie the south and midwest have conservative cultures and most people in the country are conservative so if they were born in the south the midwest or the northeast they don't see any reason to leave
the place they were raised in is conservative and so are they

@Christian Alcaba Canadians live in the south because thats the most suitable land for growing crops. If you look at a map you'll see majority of Canadians are concentrated close to the St. Lawrence River which of course gives access to the Atlantic ocean, trade, etc. Settling the north was too difficult for the English/French which is why Canada's cities are also in the south.

Great videos I really enjoy them, but I feel I should critique the reason behind the East vs West line separating the USA population.
As someone who lives in Lincoln and am very familiar with the area between the line and the Rockies, your basis of foothills or rougher terrain being the cause is wrong. While the elevation does increase, it is slow at best. The great plains in this area are very fertile and easy to navigate, making it a great place to settle and build cities.
I would argue the line is formed because of four main factors. First would be the discovery of precious minerals in the west. The prospect of becoming wealthy quick drew people to skip the great plains. This was counter to the slow westward expansion the US had that allowed larger cities to pop up as the new gateways to the west i.e. St Louis, Kansas City, and Omaha. This can also be seen in where the Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, etc started.
Of course that wasn't possible without the second reason: transportation. The transcontinental railroad starting in Omaha provided a fast and much safer route west. More railroads and later cars and planes exponentially decreased the need for larger towns and cities close together. There are many studies on the distance between cities and their size based on the distance someone can travel in one day to do their business and return home safely. This boom started around the time the cities along that line we're starting to boom.
Third factor is climate and weather. Although modern technology like air conditioning and newer irrigation techniques have made it less of a factor, the Great Plains are still subject to more arid conditions and a climate of extremes. The area is subject to great fluxuations is temperatures due to a weather phenomenon called continental effect. The further an area is from a major body of water, the greater the extremes because water doesn't heat or cool as quick as air. This keeps coastal areas, especially those with steady winds cumming in from the ocean, more steady in temperature ranges. The lack of large bodies of water create over 100° f differences every year in those areas making less attractive to live. This phenomenon is also responsible for low populations in Western China and Siberia Russia.
The fourth and probably least responsible reason for the line is environmentalism. Starting under Theodore Roosevelt, the protection of natural environment became a huge movement that continues today. Making less land available to settle. Areas that would normally be huge draws to live in the modern day because of their beauty are off limits to live in. This effect can be seen easily in maps of national parks with nearly 90% of protected land being west of the line.
Thanks for reading, it's an area I've studied for years and am passionate about.

Living in Colorado I can agree this is true, Denver is the biggest exception from this pattern, and is there because of the mix of transportation with agricultural lands, and being at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, and thus was a transportation hub to reach the high Rockies. East of Denver is largely difficult to reach and very dry, while west is the Rocky Mountains.

Something easterners don’t understand about the west is that our cities are much denser overall. You look at a satellite image of Salt Lake, Vegas, or Phoenix and you’ll see they have very distinct urban borders where the metro area suddenly ends. You go from an endless sea of houses to an absolute cutoff like someone took scissors to a map.
Of the 10 most densely populated urbanized areas, 9 are in the West. Of the 4 census regions, the West is the most urban with 89.8% of its population residing within urban areas, followed by the Northeast, at 85.0%. I believe this is due to water availability. You can’t just go out and build your own house with a local source of water. You need many people to justify the cost to extend infrastructure into an area where water is piped in from mountain water sheds hundreds of miles away.

Just look at a satellite image of a random Salt Lake City suburb and compare it to a random Boston suburb - you’ll understand why the west is the most urbanized region. The average lot size in UT (7.5k sq ft) is half the size of one in MA (15k sq ft). Ave lot size in NV is half the size of NY’s whopping 11k sq ft. Eastern cities have much more sprawl compared to the west.

Wait a minute. My paternal family has been in Texas for over 165 years, and my maternal relatives were part of the 1889 Oklahoma land rush. Well acquainted with both states for all my life (and I'm 63), I can definitely state that San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and Oklahoma City do NOT "sit where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains end," as this video claims. In fact, all of these cities are on the Great Plains of the western US or the Grand Prairie of North Texas. A combination of gently graded flatlands and low rolling hills, but nowhere in the vicinity of any mountains or even foothills of mountains.
The only Texas city that "sits where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains end" is El Paso, and that city is at the extreme western edge of the state in a region known as the Trans-Pecos -- almost in New Mexico. (Been to the Trans-Pecos many times. It's a blend of the Chihuahua Desert and the trailing southern tail of the Rockies.)
As for Oklahoma, no major city in that state comes within 350 miles of the "foothills of the Rocky Mountains" (as measured by a straight line from Oklahoma City to Tucumcari, New Mexico, the geographically nearest point that actually IS "where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains end").
Whoever scripted this video desperately needs to return to school for a heavy course in remedial geography.

Yes, I choked at that part. I thought the video was going to explain why the great plains move from green and fertile to dry and barren past the 100th meridian, well before reaching the Rocky mountains foothills. Unsurprisingly, people only settled the green areas. Same is true northward in Canada, people are not leaving close to the border as is usually assumed, but much further north, where plains green up again.
