    Finally - a realistic, logical, sane take on this whole thing...as opposed to the ridiculous takes over at the most visited wrestling figure forum where the only thing would have made them happy would have been if this was $200, included 19 mid carders, a figure of the kid that hopped the rail at Bash at Beach 96 that got bodied by Nash and a WCW Nitro fanny pack.

    • @steverogers5209
      @steverogers5209 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But most people do think it was twice as expensive as it should have been. I mean, $400 is ridiculous, plus shipping and customs outside the USA. I think you can make a custom just as nice for that price.

    • @ingloriousmax
      @ingloriousmax ปีที่แล้ว

      This just needed to be priced appropriately at $250 no figures. Pretending like this really cost $400 and the 5 figures were a 'gift from your bestfriend Mattel' is beyond moronic, companies don't give charity the beans are all counted. Just like last years stage wasn't actually worth $250, they up sold you and threw in a couple of figures which were already paid for + more. Last year's stage was a $150 item without the figures, they tossed in a couple and got you for an extra $100.
      End of the day they are price gouging, nobody said they shouldn't make money problem is they're greedy like most multi-billion dollar corporations. This one they tried to push it too far and the customer base wasn't willing to bend that far, to put this on the consumer over their own decision making is like just cringe shilling and Kyle is good at that, think hes sided with the corporation every single time one of these has ever been talked about how all of them have been priced appropriately how they're making the bare minimum margins and how ecstatic and thankful you should be! Super7, Hasbro, Mattel multiple projects each time the company has always had your best interest at heart! lol

    A little sad. Unfortunately with the current economy, 400$ is a lot to justify for most people. Hoping Mattel isn’t rattled and still comes back with something next year.

    The guys at mattel can only blame themselves. I think most people are figure collectors so the stage is not needed. They should've just offered the stage on its own at a cheaper price and offer the figures separately for figure collectors.

    • @floorboss
      @floorboss ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The figures cost nothing though by comparison.... Plus initially there was only one included. The figs are basically window dressing. That's the truth...
      _______
      And IMO WCW is #NWO Thus [Not having] A shinny _"Hollywood"_ Hogan standing out front along w/ A Bischoff.. Or even A classic Green Robed Flair, Not having WCW Classics standing out front was A tone deaf descision. I.e. A WWF _"Golden Hero"_ Hogan (Which everyone already has) & Rey Mysterio ?? Nobody equates them w/ WCW.

    I think you nailed it with many of the points you brought up. $400 right now for a luxury item isn't feasible right now for a lot of people, even more so for international buyers (with shipping, taxes, etc.).
    The figure selection was pretty poor. Those Hogan, Mysterio & Warrior figures were pretty generic. And I don't know if people really wanted that version of Scott Steiner all that much either. DDP, I get. Your suggestion of Harlem Heat would've gotten people interested more, I think. If they offered DDP, Harlem Heat, Ric Flair & whoever else (maybe a Disco Inferno? just for more promotion and I don't think he's ever been made in figure form, I could be wrong).
    I don't think doing WCW Nitro was smart either. RAW & Smack Down would've been my 1st & 2nd choice. See how they do, then go & do WCW. Heck, your idea of having WCW, then flip it around & have RAW, more than likely would've had the thing backed.
    I like a diorama idea more, as they could do scenes w/ figures like Piper's Pit, The Barber Shop, The Snake Pit, etc. Who wouldn't want a diorama with a breakaway wall & a Shockmaster figure? Plus, they could possibly have these at retail, who knows.

    Kyle, would you tend to agree that this crowdfund was rushed from the get go? Would essentially have given two months for people to get on board

      Such a shame! Just to clarify the international shipping situation (to Ireland at least) too. I checked out and the total was $435 (€388 at today's Exchanges Rate but it was €432 at the time) Customs and Excise Duty into Ireland would of been another €150 so almost €600 altogether.
      With that in mind, I can definitely see why International backers balked a little at this one.

    For new generation ring nobody paid customs cause Mattel sends all their products to Belgium, avoiding any customs. Tha'ts happened for new generation ring and all sdcc exclusives.

    Fun video KP. But _say it isnt so.._ [Size] or "Space is at A premium." Not if you already have A Ring. If you got A Ring, you have the space for A stage.. Plus WCW is #NWO & not having A Shinny _"Hollywood"_ Hogan w/ A Bischoff & maybe A blond _"Big Sexy"_ (red ring gear) Kevin Nash standing out front of the stage- really hurt the project.. As did The cosmopolitan, ambivalent WWF Hogan (which everyone already has). It was A tone deaf descision. That came off as A cheap- slap in the face maneuver.
    & I Think the Crowd Funding model is absolutely out of control. Most of this stuff should be on Store shelves. Or merchant Exclusive (Hasbro plus, Mattel Creations etc.). Especially most of the Hasbro stuff..
    > Other than that, Thanks again. I threw ya A Sub (again) you earned it.. Hard Work!

  • @heyyou9693
    @heyyou9693 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly, instead of a huge price point like this, scale it down to a more toy-etic model just to have something. Maybe we don't need working lights and something that takes up a ton of space. Smaller pieces could be better. I don't know, I'm no genius. I still say a War to Settle the Score Piper Ultimate Edition. I will pay for that. If people complain about this, watch thd movie Air. WWE is just one line of Mattel. They believe in what they are doing and need their bosses about their ideas. In the big picture, this stuff doesn't matter. It is just a little enjoyment we can get from this wicked world we live in. Good video, Kyle.

    You're right about going in a different direction with something smaller. Personally, I would love a SmackDown era APA bar/pool hall. Have a breakaway pool table and other accessories like pool sticks, bottles, etc. And something like that can work with other figure lines. But yeah, let's see where we go from here.

    Great breakdown, Kyle. I didn't back the stage and if you told me even 3 or 4 months ago that I didn't I wouldn't have believed it. This is my sweet spot. It's just that the reality set in that I didn't have the room for this, to truly enjoy it, so then I'm spending $400+ and not getting the return on my investment. Nothing negative against Mattel. I think they did right by us for the most part. I would have preferred Booker T and Eddy Guerrero figures over Hogan and Warrior but that's me. Obviously names like Mortis or Glacier are silly but Booker and even Eddy are icons of that era. As for going forward I think you hit the nail on the head that people want figures. In general when it comes to wrestling collectors we want figures much more than stages and playsets. It's not like Star Wars with ships or GI Joe where the tank was a huge success. So I agree with you on some form of a playset/theme but with an emphasis on figures. I still think your original idea of Hell in a Cell could work but I don't know if Mattel would take the chance.

    1. As you said, the figures weren’t enough to get MOC collectors interested. Why wasn’t it just the NWO? Even another Flair is more toyetic than this Hogan, Rey or Warrior
    2. The fact you can break it down doesn’t offset the size issue, cos I’m not getting my moneys worth if half the set is in storage
    3. It was just more trouble than it was worth for international collectors. I may have gotten the Steiner fig from ringside if it had been made, but currency conversions, shipping fees, customs fees up front, and no option to pay in instalments - they made it so hard. I’d love to know the ratio of international backers compared to the New Gen ring.

      A great analysis on this project.
      I truly think this was just a mistimed project. We are borderline in a recession in the US and people weren't ready to drop $400, even if that is a justified price point.
      Also, they would have been wise to take more time to secure other wrestlers licenses and wait out Sting's AEW contract. An Ultimate Sting with maybe a few newly secured WCW wrestlers would have no doubt pushed this to 5K.

    Kyle, you should work for Mattel lol. You did a great job covering both sides of the coin. And all though I may disagree with the way you tackled the “it’s a business” talking point (since this is where it gets deeper to me,since this is a conversation about why capitalism sucks - and not toys) - I appreciate the fact that at the end of the day you do acknowledge the fact that people are struggling, and this is a BIG ask, and it wasn’t presented in the right way. Period.
    I say that to say, as a person who honestly avoided watching some of your videos just due being a hater honestly - you’ve gained a fan in me. And I will continue to watch this channel and support it after watching this video, strictly because you showed humility, and objectivity in this one in a major way. Personally, i didn’t back it because i more so collect figures. I try/tend to stay away from large items such as vehicles and in this case, stages. Also, I’m an on card collector so the last thing I’m going to be doing is breaking them out of their packaging which in this case would be the only reason to buy this stage, for me Atleast. If i was going to buy this stage, it would be to set it up with a ring and the whole shebang with the figures and what not. Since I’m not going to do that, i didn’t feel the need or desire to have this product. Now i understand that it came with figures and that more figures would be unlocked as the project gets more support. A lot of people were telling me i could buy the ring and sell it when it comes in and keep the figures. That’s also another good point, but I’m just not that kind of person. I don’t collect to resell. Some can see that as a downfall of mine, but i just collect because of nostalgia, or being a fan of a certain product, or character, or style of product, or wave in particular. I don’t look at it as a way to make money cause then it’s not really as fun. Of course it’s nice for your collection to have/hold some value, but if i don’t have a purpose for it in the scope of how i collect, then I’m not really too interested. Plus at that $400 price point, wether it’s worth it or not, is just a little too strong for me and a lot of people. I’d personally rather spend $400 on like 10 figures than a stage and possibly getting a couple of figures. I’m not spending money at that clip on figures or collectibles at all and if i did, it would be relegated to a select few vintage items that are grails for me.

    I really loved WCW and would switch back and forth during Monday nights during commercials, but always preferred Nitro. At first I told myself I would buy one if we got close enough to push it over the edge. Then I had to be honest with myself and ask “why am I not jumping at this” and my answer was because they lost. The truth is I history they lost, WWE won and in turn all of the characters I may miss or be nostalgic over ended up under the WWE banner anyways. So if I am going to find the space and money for an arena it would have to be WWE, especially since I have the Raw ring etc. I do love the WCW Warrior, but that can be done under WWE as well. Very well done and intelligent video as always! I’ll also add day 1 and 2, hell maybe the first week; I kept wanting to hit the button and the excitement was there, but I didn’t have enough information and it was kind of drip fed. Most of the best info came out at Wrestlmania from content creators.

    So refreshing to see a logical review. After seeing it in person at the SuperStore, I'm really disappointed this didn't get funded. I felt after seeing it in action, I didn't really care about the figures as much as I wanted the stage. I felt it was perfectly priced but if it was $50-$75 less that would be sweet spot moving forward. However this feels like a huge L in Mattel's marketing. No shots at Steve and the Team but this from the jump was marketed so poorly. They should have unveiled the Monday Night Wars line and the future ultimates and THEN unveil this as the major piece or the end-goal result for the line. The crammed marketing push from Wednesday to Friday felt desperate in the end, when this should have been mega pushed from the jump. As an early backer, they didn't reward us for doing that! They just slapped another figure in, in hopes it got funded. That felt like a huge slap in the face as an early backer. The figure offering NEEDS to be better going forward. 2 crowdfunders and both had to be adjusted mid-fund. They've set the precedent that if you just wait they'll offer more. Tier 1 unlock needs to include at minimum 3 figures and 1 of the 3 could be a early backer bonus. Hopefully crowdfunders are not dead forever but damn this is disappointing for not only the collectors but even bigger disappointment for the team.

  • @kiltedcripple
    @kiltedcripple ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If I can offer just a few thoughts, for those interested in such things, this is not directed at Kyle but inspired by his commentary:
    If this ring wasn't for the casual fan, why are we hinging the figure choices on who would appeal to the casuals?
    Kyle correctly point out that Mattel is in this to make money, and I don't disagree with that, but if you solicit a toy you don't produce, you leave money on the table. Let ne be specific for international collectors: you're asking them to spend damned near double, all upfront. If you can't give them a layaway payment plan, or just eat the customs costs, you cut them out completely. If you don't think that was a factor in the failure to fund, you're not paying attention.
    WCW was the house that Sting built. If they couldn't or wouldn't get a real in place between WWE and AEW to get a Sting figure for this, they were never serious to begin with. But in an overall, the figure add ons were largely terrible. In the Ultimates, we've had 2 Hogans and a Rey quite recently, these were nor serious add ons. I know Kyle name dropped Mortis, and Booker T as potential names, and I don't disagree with either of those BUT the entire lineup should have been guys that were either WCW started, or WCW staples. Lex Luger, Buff Bagwell, Rick Steiner to go with Scotty, there's a long list there... you could have gotten a lot of traction with a Scott Hall memorial figure.
    The idea of mold re-use is often cited as a huge cost in action figures, and it's not nothing, but it's also not everything. Molds are really expensive, but they're also steel, and in action figures, they can push hundreds of thousands of units through. The idea that a 5 ton slab is steel wears it after 4 thousand units is laughably naive. The action figure industry isn't that fundamentally different today, when a mainline toy pushes 30K, 40K units, as it was when Castle Grayskull sold like 350K units. What makes some toys expensive now is the size of the mold, an action figure, for example, is a smaller mold, even with all those tiny parts, than a mold would be for something like Castle Grayskull, where huge slabs of plastic need even larger slabs of steel to hold them... but this stage didn't have huge panels, it had several smaller panels, and scaffolding they should already have molds for. This should not have been enormously expensive. Kyle writes a few times a 150 price tag, no, definitely not, but if I look at like some of the 1/10 scale doll houses out there, they're larger than this would have been in and the 180 to 200 dollar price points, and they're often carved wood panels. And yes, the lights add cost but again, if you craft with those LEDs, the programming is free, the Arduino interface could range between 50 and 100 bucks, so maybe 300 bucks? Maybe? Between 250 and 350 would have been believable, I think, but then it's on the marketing team to convince people of that.
    And to that end "why would Mattel price gouge?" Because they can. Because they're hiding behind inflation that no one less ever things are worth anymore, so they think they can charge anything they like for a bespoke piece. Because not taking it to retail means they can ask us for a premium price where Walmart or Target would have forced their price point down so they had room to sell it with a cut for themselves, but they'd have moved 10 times as many units. Just looking at what Mattwl charges for their in store rings vs the crowd funded ring, it wasn't worth the "collector grade" surcharge, and we don't perceive this to be either. I love hearing from toy makers how the ghost of oil has gone up, the ghost of steel has gone up, the cost of plastic has gone up, expect that when you look at commodity prices, they're not that high. Like fun fact, when the MOTUC Castle Grayskull came out, steel proved were half what they were in 1982, when the original Castle was made, oil prices were down nearly 40%... yet the Castle needed to be 6 times as much. Now, it was bigger, and the paint was nicer, but 6 times bigger, 6 times better paint? Nah. Companies don't charge what an item costs to make, they charge what they think the market will bear for the good or service they're offering. Look no further than their shareholder meetings. Boy's toys sales are down from 2022, 2021, but profits are up. The only way that works mathematically is price gouging.

    1. They shoulda made it where you can remove the WCW Nitro pieces and replace them with nWo Nitro. Being able to have two different stages would have given incentive for people to buy multiples.
    2. The tiers should not have been revealed until it was close to being backed. All this did was show all the pessimists what they weren’t going to get if it doesn’t hit those goals and they started subtracting their perceived value from the cost making them think this is a $200 stage and not worth $400 unless all the figures get unlocked.
