    How similar is the writing style to Stephen King's? I'm not a fan of Stephen's writing style, but I was excited to read this book. So I'm just wondering how similar the styles are.

      I can't tell the difference.

    This book was horrifying and heartbreaking in equal measure.

    It would be hard to shake off the influence of his father's writing style, I think, particularly starting out. He's got one of the best writers to help him nurture his storytelling, but just thru DNA alone I would think that would be an influence. Granted as he matures, his style might come into its own.

      Which is funny because Owen writes nothing like his old man. He writes far more like his mother, but with an even more distinct voice.

    what order would you read if had to chose? strange weather, nos4r2, horns...? im saving locke n key until i have them all in HB

    • @EdwardLorn
      @EdwardLorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ZeNex74 if you want to start with his best, start with NOS4A2. If you wanna start with one of his worst, read STRANGE WEATHER. If you want a good middle ground, start with HORNS.

    My favorite part of writing in this is the letter Marin leaves to Ig. I made the mistake of listening to this while so was driving and started crying during the letter. I think that was the best writing in the book for me.

    Honestly Bro I Do See somewhat the similarities between Stephen King and Joe Hill but there writing skills are WAY different Stephen King Builds up a story one reads at least 100 pages before getting to the point Joe Hill Doesn't beat around the bush like his old man He Gets to the point right away. So far I've read nos4a2 and I'm half way through heart shaped box and there quick reads real page turners

    Maybe he's trying to expand the King universe? Just a thought...great review as always E

      I'm sure that's what he's intending. Thanks, MrTofy 😊

    I think Locke & Key is the best, most "Joe Hill" thing Joe Hill has done. That and "Pop Art," and maybe "Aloft" from the new collection.

    • @EdwardLorn
      @EdwardLorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Blu Gilliand I would definitely agree with "Pop Art" and ALOFT. I have yet to read LOCKE & KEY. I have the box set on the way though, and I don't believe it will take me long to get through them when they arrive. Once I'm done I'll definitely chime in on them. Thanks for watchin, Blu. ☺️

    Joe Hill is GREAT, he stands alone. But I will say this he holds the keys to the Kingdom. Pun intended. He also will connect the dots. What scares me is that we have not heard from his daughter or have we?

    • @EdwardLorn
      @EdwardLorn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naomi is a Unitarian minister, I believe. I doubt we'll get anything fiction from her. And Joe Hill used to stand on his own. He created a fanbase on his own merit then reverted to mimicry of his father after being outed. Shame too because his first three books were fantastic.

    Didn't watch the movie. Loved the novel. As you said: amazing concept, great humor, and most of all a compelling story. I enjoyed the backstory even more then the main plotline: sort of coming-of-age, and in a good way. All in all a highly recommendable read.

    • @laertesdd
      @laertesdd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      p.s.: Whereas I do not agree with you on the "King sound" criticism. But maybe I just don't have your fine sense to really hear this. I always found Joe Hill to definitely have his own unique voice. Take 20th Century Ghosts for example... or do you agree with me here? Anyway, to me, Horns did not sound Kingish at all.

    • @EdwardLorn
      @EdwardLorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +laertesdd the stories in 20th sound nothing like King. I feel he did that on purpose. Not even HEART-SHAPED BOX sounded like King. It wasn't until HORNS that I got that sense of King. My thing is, he read a lot like Neil Gaiman for his first two published works, maybe a little more wordy than Gaiman, but I don't think his voice was anything unique. With HORNS he sounded JUST LIKE his father. It was kinda eerie.

      Edward Lorn
      Amazing how obvious it seems to you. I really didn't notice (and of course I didn't know that he's King's son at the time).
      So what about NOS4A2 and The Fireman? Do they sound Kingish to you too? (Didn't really get that in your review.)

    • @EdwardLorn
      @EdwardLorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +laertesdd we'll get there. Those reviews should be up next week and the week after next, respectively. Just wait until you see all the proof I've compiled. It might just shock you how much there is.

    Horns is my favorite Hill novel. It was my first, and so far it is the only one I’ve reread. 20th Century Ghosts comes close, but Horns is it for me.

      That said, I’ve at least *liked* everything Hill has released thus far.

    I enjoyed Horns a lot! Movie too! I will agree he definitely takes after daddy-o. I can only hope that maybe he starts to find his own voice now that people will buy his books?

    • @EdwardLorn

      See, I think he had his own voice until it was revealed who's son he was. Now he seems to have lost it 😔

    Have you seen The Woman in Black? Terrific movie featuring Daniel Radcliffe based on a Susan Hill novel.

      +diptanjan sarma purkayastha didn't care much for that one. Radcliff was the only good part for me. Haven't read the novel yet though.

    1. Horns - great idea and good but not perfect execution. The movie adaptation starring Harry Potter and that angry dude from Social Network totalt blows ofc.
    2. NOS4A2 - pretty cool, but to long and a bit wierd in the wrong way. The comic is exactly how I imagined the book!
    3. The Fireman - "I yawned my self to shit" as Bukowski said. Joe Hill is related to who again? What happened?!

    • @EdwardLorn
      @EdwardLorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +staffski I disagree with everything you've said here but I'll have to wait until I post my reviews of NOS4A2 and THE FIREMAN to defend my argument because spoilers 😉
      Suffice it to say, THE FIREMAN reeks of King in the worst possible way, but more on that in my review. ☺️
