(101) Nights of JNU

- In 2020, when I got into JNU for my master's, I decided to record little bits of my everyday life. Soon, I started dragging people close to me into this silly documentary/film project. So, after 2 years of filming and 6 months of editing, here is "(101) Nights of JNU".
Due to Covid, our JNU experience began in online mode. By March 2021, the pandemic situation was slightly under control, and many of us were on campus, hoping for a return to normalcy. But in less than 15 days, everything changed as the second wave devastated the country.
After another year of Google Meets, the campus finally opened rather poetically in March 2022. Only about 3 months remained of our master's. But, for me, those 100 nights felt like 3 years as they took me back to 2019-the beginning of academics, JNU, and so much more-making me rethink it all.

Hi. I am Sourabh Yadav, a freelance writer and filmmaker. My channel is an odd mix of films, literature, and comedy. Some of my work includes
•A modern adaptation of the Balcony Scene in Romeo and Juliet.
• A 2-min short film called "Ek Baar Bolke Toh Dekh", which got me selected among the Top 50 filmmakers in the TakeTen (Netflix & FilmCompanion) competition, 2022.
• "The Possibilities of Priya", which won the Silver Award at Talking Films Online's Smartphone Contest.

You know that the story teller did their part well when the listener goes through the naration and lives it as their own! This movie makes me nostalgic for something i never had! Wish i could have lived these 101 nights of JNU for real!

So I watched your MA entrance video because I also want to get into JNU next year for my MA(gee who doesn't). And then I saw the 1000 days of DU popped up and I thought 'he's in DU, I'm in DU. let's compare our experiences'. Let me tell you Vastly Different. Honestly, you lived. Actually lived the DU experience. And I envy you for that. I feel like I've simply existed through most of my 2 years long college life. That or your movie making skills are mind blowing. I now feel nostalgic for the moments I've never had and probably never will have. (Off-campus girls college, living in Delhi with strict parents). I do want to experience the kind of things likes of which you have. But I can't. And then I thought koi na I'll do all that in masters and proceeded to watch 101 nights of JNU.
My this was an even worse rollercoaster ride. Seeing you not liking the course you were pursuing even though you clearly loved it earlier made me question if I'll like it too. Will I hate it? Will it be too much? Am I even meant for JNU? I don't know. But then again, do we ever?
I loved the way you had documented your experience throughout college life. And since I am a theatre kid I think I'll too (because even though I want to act, mujhe apni movie me kon lega). So I've decided I'll make a movie too about my experience at DU. And maybe just maybe one day I'll send it to you and ask you is 'ghatiya university' and 'ghatiya students' pr bani ye 'ghatiya movie' apko kaisi lagi.
P. S. Apologies for ranting/having an existential crisis in your comments section. I loved both the videos. You're amazing!
Heh, it's not like that Dia. While I was in college, I also felt that I was missing out on a lot of things. But one of the many great things about art is that it makes you more appreciative of everything you have experienced. That's what Days of DU did for me. It made me look back on all the little moments we'd had shared-and that's all they were, nothing exceptional-and be grateful for them.
Ah, yes, I am so happy you saw both films. The DU boy would be very surprised to know that he got into JNU and ended up not being happy most of the time. But, as often happens, things got better and I found my way :)
Yes, please do document your experiences! Irrespective of whether you actually finish and publish the film, the videos/pictures themselves will become so cherishable over the years. And yes, I would love to see your film :)

But for most people, the experience of going to JNU is about academics, finding good company, and enjoying the beautiful campus-that is what I have tried to portray in the film too. Haha yes, the YULU stand was removed even while I was staying there, I think sometime in March or April of 2021. The clips were shot in January. I stayed there till September.
