Thanks Tom, there's at least one person out there who, when restoring their own furniture thinks, "What would Tom do in this case?"...then does an extra careful job. I've watched enough of your videos to have you "virtually" at my side keeping me focused, patient, and enjoying my work.
It's me. I'm that person. :)
There's at least HUNDREDS of persons!
If you're like me, then putting into practice the things that you see on this channel only shows you just how good Tom is at this. Let me know when you're trying to carve a chair's foot out of a block of wood :D CHEERS!!!
Not to mention file these away for future reference, reminders and review those little yet key points with steps to improve longevity. ❣️
You're welcome!You are so nice!
Anyone who has any interest in Furniture restoration needs to watch this video. A masterclass which will provide information , tips and knowledge to anyone who wants to try restoration. Indeed, even those who may not have such an interest should watch for the appreciation of a master craftsman. Oh and my new favourite phrase apart from "I Think it looks pretty good", is "Little Nits" lol Nice one TJ.
Thanks Lee! That's very nice
The work of Thomas spans the centuries. He handcrafts a piece of inlay to match the 19th century original and also mentions a 21st century website that produces inlay. Amazing work, thanks for sharing it Thomas.
You're welcome!
I remember the card table, still amazed after seeing it again. Thank you sir
You’re welcome! That’s one of my favorites too!
What a good teacher Thomas is of his trade, very humble, gentle, any younger ones going into restoration, will not go wrong in watching Thomas video's, and will greatly add to their learning in doing so....Thomas Thank You.
You're welcome! I appreciate that!
It's really good to see this episode with many of your favorite old restorations. Thanks, Tom., Watching you make irregularly shaped replacement pieces of veneer and the inlay too is fascinating too.
Thanks Phil. I appreciate it!
Thanks for the joyful, spontaneous laugh of delight when I saw Ella in her ear protection! Though she has now gone on, she still gives joy!
You're welcome! She looked so cute!
After seeing how cracked the side was on the dresser I didn’t think it would be that beautiful! Nice work Mr Johnson!!
Thanks! That was a tough one!
Hi Tom. I'm still in the middle of watching this video, but have to comment at 49:48 - simply AMAZING veneer patch (the stuff of dreams). I sure hope you're doing okay. It's unusual to see your posts like this - which I love watching, believe me. But, I hope you're relaxing and not in any type of distress. Prayers for you and your family. Thanks forever for all the help you've always been to me.
Thanks Kat! definitely - relaxing - we have a lot of out of town guests etc. Besides, these compilations do better than my posts of new videos! Lot's more new work on the way though
@@johnsonrestoration I love re-watching your videos. I *always* find something new I hadn't noticed before! One of these days I'll be ready to try some of these skills on an old turn of the century chest of drawers I inherited - didn't know anything about it until I started watching your videos and saw things like old wrought nails and beautiful dovetails in it. All the drawers have the original key holes, although no keys! I've ordered a bunch of stuff, but I want to find something to practice on first!
@@johnsonrestoration Oh, I am very glad to hear this. 😃
The table looks very good in my eyes. I did all that you asked at the end. This way I get to keep learning.
Thank you! I'm always learning too!
In just one word: fantastic!!
Thank you!
Tom. I really enjoy watching any craftsman doing what he does best - and you are very obviously one of the best. Although I dabbled in making furniture some time ago, my interest is in metals - I restore classic motorcycles. The oily bits are relatively straightforward but the frame blasting and painting are more in line with your type of work in that rust pockets and damage need careful restoration.
I am from middle England and have not come across such detailed restoration work as you show in your videos. Some may find the detail a bit boring but for me it is anything but. As they say "the devil is in the detail" and you show that to perfection. Please carry on the good work to show the world what real craftsmanship is all about.
Thank you Roger! I appreciate it. And yes, I imagine restoring motorcycles is a lot more complicated! have you read the book "Shop Class as Soul Craft"? It's written by a motorcycle mechanic and is a must read!
and I love that dog
Me too!
Oh yes, amazing work as ever, gosh I did enjoy that. It's lovely to see the pieces displayed in an "at home" setting afterwards too. Of course I enjoyed seeing dear Ella and the kitty and the chooks too. Awe-struck as always at your matching skills, Tom, such a beautiful job. 👍👏
Thank you! That's very nice!
Thomas: I love these compilations of your restoration work. The last one of the table was wonderful, although I enjoyed them all.
Genius! Carol from California
Thanks Carol!
Oh Bella looked so cute with her headphones on and how well she accepted them. It’s always so lovely to see her. She is surely missed.
Oh yes she is! Thank you!
That Federal card table was a masterpiece of restoration. You give us hope for so many pieces that are damaged. You give them new life.
Thank you! That's nice
Finally, a video that shows how inlay is made! ..at least one way it's done. I may have overlooked others, but this one got my attention! Thank you so much Tom!
Thanks! It was fun making it
Another fine job, Good health in 2024 Tom
Thank you! And I wish the same for you!
Even though I did watched all of them before I sat back and enjoyed😎
Thanks! Yes, I enjoy seeing them again too!
This was real masterclass of those hardest repairs there is!! Really fine work with that federal table👌 Thank you!
You're welcome! That Card Table is one of my favorite jobs and video!
The handmarks on cultural history...😬
I started two weeks ago this mahogany biedermeier doublebed, made here in Finland about 1830-40. Ive never had anything so big under work, so its a real challenge and has beautiful patina. Unfortunately the whole base for mattress is painted with really hard white paint somewhere 1900's, that has sink to all cracks of wood there is.
It hurts my eye to see those white lines, but I dont know how to get the paint leftovers up without damaging the wood. Do you think its even possible?
Loved watching these videos! I am not a woodworker but am so fascinated by your work. I had no idea how inlay was done! I’m a quilter and recognized similar concepts. You are an amazing artist. Thank you for sharing
You're welcome Kim! There are so many similarities between sewing and woodworking!
Thank you Tom. You're a great inspiration and give me confidence when I tackle furniture restoration.
Great to hear! Good luck with all your projects!
It's great watching your master classes. Just amazing! Cheers from Spain
Awesome, thank you!
Intrigued by the delicate inlay construction...amazing!
You and me both! Thanks!
I love the ear muffs on your beautiful dog!❤️
Thanks! She's so good
Thanks again for these. I discovered you during the lockdown phase of the pandemic and you really helped me get through those days. I've always been interested in furniture restoration and had only done a few very simple things so I know part of my enjoyment is simple vicarious enjoyment. But I think there is more. Beyond the technical details of good camera work and editing and your own solid narration I think there is the simple presence of you. Watching your videos makes me feel like I'm in the presence of a truly nice human being. Now on to my afternoon Manhattan which I will raise in a toast to you.
Thanks! Let's raise our Manhattans in a toast!
I have never seen inlay made before. Thank you for the demonstrate. You do amazing work.
You’re welcome! 😊
This is such good therapy to see.
Thanks!
I learned so much from this video and have used it as a guide for repairs of my own. Excellent workmanship.
Glad it helped! Thanks!
Wow, you are a miracle worker with the tiny inlay. Impressive.
Thank you!
That piece is hammered.
Maybe I'm hammered! Seriously, thanks!
Ear protection on the dog earned you a subscription!
Thanks! That's great!
Tom, what do you mean looks pretty good! It’s gorgeous! Beautiful! (referring to campaign table). But so are all the pieces you did in this video. Fantastic job. That inlay job was fantastic and looks original.
Thank you!
That card table is spectacular. Such a pleasure to watch your careful and expert work.
Thanks! That was one of my favorite projects
I am always glad to have watched your videos, I always learn things. You are a great craftsman and I very much appreciate that you have chosen to teach and pass on your skills and love for antigues. The work on the apron of the federal card table was particularly impressive.
Thank you! This wa

Your work on the face veneers is extraordinary.
Thanks! I lucked out on this one!

There is no such thing as having too many clamps! You do excellent work! God bless.
So true! Thanks
I’ve never seen one before! It’s beautiful!

Worked a miracle on that one Tom.
Thanks! I liked this job

excellent vid only10min in, but gotta comment before I forget, the graphics showing the clamp, battens and caul plus the explanation was excellent. I did not know that. very well done thanks
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
I’m a long time lover of restoration channels, but I recently found yours and it’s so informative and entertaining. You’ve got a really great gig all around. Gonna be bummed when I binge watch all of em lol. Anyways, thanks Tom!
Awesome! You're welcome!
Wow, what a joy it is to watch you quietly work away. Fantastic results - you must have some very happy clients. Thank you for posting this extra long treat.
You're welcome!
Once again tackle any job and the finished project is truly a beautiful piece of furniture..... I am sure that you aare aware that vineagar is very good at killing mold.... I enjoy watching all of your repairs... great job
Thank you! Yes, I have learned that from these comments and now I always use vinegar
I was sick and miserable in the hospital. I was feeling ugh. Your video occupied my time and made me feel better. Thanks Tom I needed you as a nerve pill.

It looks better than "pretty good." It looks amazing!
Thank you!
Darn it, Tom! You dropped this just as I'm getting ready to leave for work. 😆 On the bright side, I have something to start my weekend with after work. You rock, Tom!
Thanks!
Definitely DRAMATIC, the kind of drama that lowers your Blood Pressure. Always enjoy watching these projects.

Excellent recap format; thanks!
You're welcome!
Thats perfection 👏👏👏
Thank you! I appreciate it!
When possible, it would be great to see these repaired items of furniture back in-situ with their owners.
Thanks! Yes, I try to show them in my house, but that's a pain. I should ask people to send photos when they get their pieces home.
@@johnsonrestoration your workmanship and infinite patience are a joy to watch… keep up the good work 👍
Love that you protect Ella's ears!!!
Thanks! What a good girl!
Amazing video. I learned so much. Beautiful craftsmanship

Awesome as always!🐝
Thank you! Cheers!
It looks spectacular.
Thank you!
A great compilation!
Thank you!
Ja jestem już za stary aby zmieniać zawód, ale nie ma nic piękniejszego niż praca z drewnem. Pan Johnson ma wiecej energii i siły od wielu młodszych osób. Sto lat i jeszcze więcej, pozdrawiam.
Dziękuję Ci! I Wam też życzę wszystkiego najlepszego!
I just love the clamps looking like a signal box! And the caterpillar becoming a butterfly, mirroring these beautiful transformations.
Thank you so much! I love the butterfly transition as well!
Thank you Tom, hope you and yours are all well
You're welcome! We are! And I hope the same for you
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Tom, whenever you say “pretty good” I remember my father. When he gave me a “pretty good”, it was his highest praise and I knew I had done well! I hope you set up a Patreon account, and I’m enjoying these compilation videos too. Keep up the good work! Adrian
Thanks! The Patreon account involves more content, that's a problem for me
@@johnsonrestoration Tom, lots of Patreon creators just release their youtube videos a day early on Patreon. No need for extra content, as most folks just want a way to support your efforts!
Everything with years has some dings, including us. They have much to do with character. of the piece or the person. I thoroughly enjoyed this project, replaying several parts to better understand what you were doing or just for the pure entertainment of watching you work.
And thanks for another classic; "It looks like 9/32." Yeah, that's what I was thinking. 🙃
Thanks, Tom!
You're welcome!
The chest of drawers is a really beautiful piece.
One of my personal favorites! Thanks
Very good artist as always
Thank you so much! 😀
Bravo!!!
Thank you!
Love your work. 👍
Thank you very much!

Thanks, will do!
This was so good.
Thank you Judith!
Always appreciating your videos. 🤗. Thank you Tom. Peace 💫
You're welcome!
Hey Tom
All beautiful outcomes 🙂
I really like your camera work and editing, it keeps it all more interesting in my opinion.
Take care
Thanks, will do!
These videos were like visiting long time. Friends.
Thank you so much.
You're welcome!
The master of the masters at work ,simply superb.
So nice of you! Thanks!
Your putty knife heater thing is a really cool idea to have.
Yes, and you set your coffee cup on top of it and it keeps it perfect! A bonus!
I liked both tables!
Me too! Thanks
It is so rewarding to watch you work.I assume you will "make all things right," so I just sit back and see the piece become what it will be. Kind of like watching the rehabilitation of a person who has suffered and injury and is slowly recovering: a little scarred, older but wiser, still beautiful.
Thanks! I like the way you said that!
The craftsmanship that goes into these restorations is very enjoyable to watch; the care and passion you have for each project is evident. Thanks for sharing that with us by making these videos.
You're welcome!
Especially like the veneer repair on the card table.
Me too! My favorite! Thanks
The federal card table is one of my favourite restorations great to see it again
Thanks! My favorite too!
I love your work. The pup’s hearing protection made me smile. It makes me kinda sad that a lot of woodworkers use PVA glue nowadays for everything. When that furniture needs repair in 100 years… Well, I feel for that restorer. Hot hide glue or liquid hide glue is definitely the way to go for joinery. PVA has its place, as does epoxy, CA, etc. as for the tabletop glue up and extended time you needed. But hide glue is excellent for fine furniture joinery!
Thanks! Yes! So true. I use PVA for all new work though
Molly the dog with her ear protection is just everything.
Thanks! She was such a good girl!
Saludos desde Argentina, La Plata. Siempre excelente tu canal!!! Abrazo grande!!
Gracias!
I have a feeling Tom has never worked a day in his life because what he is doing is what he loves. We love it too Tom!
Thanks! True - to a point. We've worked pretty hard doing what we love!
Excellent work. I particularly like how the campaign table turned out.
Thanks! Me too - I like that table
Wooow!!! Amazing
Thanks!
@@johnsonrestoration thank you 😊🙏🏼

The ruined apron looked really desperate… But, hey, presto! You worked your magic, Tom! Yet again I'm in awe at your patience and your talent.
Thank you Sylvie! I love how this came out
TJ, best restoration yet.Soothing to the mind to watch. Throughly enjoyed!
Thanks!
Love the card table result- an artist at work👍
Thanks! One of my favorite projects
Enjoyed the video marathon Tom. You did as usual a fantastic job especially matching the inlay and making the inlay on that federal card table. Thanks for your time in editing the videos. Yall take care and God bless.
Thanks Ron!
