Thanks Tom, there's at least one person out there who, when restoring their own furniture thinks, "What would Tom do in this case?"...then does an extra careful job. I've watched enough of your videos to have you "virtually" at my side keeping me focused, patient, and enjoying my work.
If you're like me, then putting into practice the things that you see on this channel only shows you just how good Tom is at this. Let me know when you're trying to carve a chair's foot out of a block of wood :D CHEERS!!!
Anyone who has any interest in Furniture restoration needs to watch this video. A masterclass which will provide information , tips and knowledge to anyone who wants to try restoration. Indeed, even those who may not have such an interest should watch for the appreciation of a master craftsman. Oh and my new favourite phrase apart from "I Think it looks pretty good", is "Little Nits" lol Nice one TJ.
I was sick and miserable in the hospital. I was feeling ugh. Your video occupied my time and made me feel better. Thanks Tom I needed you as a nerve pill.
Tom. I really enjoy watching any craftsman doing what he does best - and you are very obviously one of the best. Although I dabbled in making furniture some time ago, my interest is in metals - I restore classic motorcycles. The oily bits are relatively straightforward but the frame blasting and painting are more in line with your type of work in that rust pockets and damage need careful restoration. I am from middle England and have not come across such detailed restoration work as you show in your videos. Some may find the detail a bit boring but for me it is anything but. As they say "the devil is in the detail" and you show that to perfection. Please carry on the good work to show the world what real craftsmanship is all about.
Thank you Roger! I appreciate it. And yes, I imagine restoring motorcycles is a lot more complicated! have you read the book "Shop Class as Soul Craft"? It's written by a motorcycle mechanic and is a must read!
What a good teacher Thomas is of his trade, very humble, gentle, any younger ones going into restoration, will not go wrong in watching Thomas video's, and will greatly add to their learning in doing so....Thomas Thank You.
It's really good to see this episode with many of your favorite old restorations. Thanks, Tom., Watching you make irregularly shaped replacement pieces of veneer and the inlay too is fascinating too.
The work of Thomas spans the centuries. He handcrafts a piece of inlay to match the 19th century original and also mentions a 21st century website that produces inlay. Amazing work, thanks for sharing it Thomas.
The handmarks on cultural history...😬 I started two weeks ago this mahogany biedermeier doublebed, made here in Finland about 1830-40. Ive never had anything so big under work, so its a real challenge and has beautiful patina. Unfortunately the whole base for mattress is painted with really hard white paint somewhere 1900's, that has sink to all cracks of wood there is. It hurts my eye to see those white lines, but I dont know how to get the paint leftovers up without damaging the wood. Do you think its even possible?
Thanks again for these. I discovered you during the lockdown phase of the pandemic and you really helped me get through those days. I've always been interested in furniture restoration and had only done a few very simple things so I know part of my enjoyment is simple vicarious enjoyment. But I think there is more. Beyond the technical details of good camera work and editing and your own solid narration I think there is the simple presence of you. Watching your videos makes me feel like I'm in the presence of a truly nice human being. Now on to my afternoon Manhattan which I will raise in a toast to you.
Hi Tom. I'm still in the middle of watching this video, but have to comment at 49:48 - simply AMAZING veneer patch (the stuff of dreams). I sure hope you're doing okay. It's unusual to see your posts like this - which I love watching, believe me. But, I hope you're relaxing and not in any type of distress. Prayers for you and your family. Thanks forever for all the help you've always been to me.
Thanks Kat! definitely - relaxing - we have a lot of out of town guests etc. Besides, these compilations do better than my posts of new videos! Lot's more new work on the way though
@@johnsonrestoration I love re-watching your videos. I *always* find something new I hadn't noticed before! One of these days I'll be ready to try some of these skills on an old turn of the century chest of drawers I inherited - didn't know anything about it until I started watching your videos and saw things like old wrought nails and beautiful dovetails in it. All the drawers have the original key holes, although no keys! I've ordered a bunch of stuff, but I want to find something to practice on first!
Thomas: I love these compilations of your restoration work. The last one of the table was wonderful, although I enjoyed them all. Genius! Carol from California
Finally, a video that shows how inlay is made! ..at least one way it's done. I may have overlooked others, but this one got my attention! Thank you so much Tom!
Tom, what do you mean looks pretty good! It’s gorgeous! Beautiful! (referring to campaign table). But so are all the pieces you did in this video. Fantastic job. That inlay job was fantastic and looks original.
Loved watching these videos! I am not a woodworker but am so fascinated by your work. I had no idea how inlay was done! I’m a quilter and recognized similar concepts. You are an amazing artist. Thank you for sharing
Oh yes, amazing work as ever, gosh I did enjoy that. It's lovely to see the pieces displayed in an "at home" setting afterwards too. Of course I enjoyed seeing dear Ella and the kitty and the chooks too. Awe-struck as always at your matching skills, Tom, such a beautiful job. 👍👏
I am always glad to have watched your videos, I always learn things. You are a great craftsman and I very much appreciate that you have chosen to teach and pass on your skills and love for antigues. The work on the apron of the federal card table was particularly impressive.
I’m a long time lover of restoration channels, but I recently found yours and it’s so informative and entertaining. You’ve got a really great gig all around. Gonna be bummed when I binge watch all of em lol. Anyways, thanks Tom!
Darn it, Tom! You dropped this just as I'm getting ready to leave for work. 😆 On the bright side, I have something to start my weekend with after work. You rock, Tom!
