I think Paul Tillich has a lot of potential of transforming Christianity. He was also interested in Jung. The reason why Tillich’s influence was limited was because Tillich was a socialist arriving in the USA during the McCarthy era so he became marginalized as the nation became conservative.
The key differences of Tillich and Jung is Tillich emphasized ontology vs merely Jung’s phenomenology. In other words Tillich understood the problem of the fundamentalist wanting a sense of ontological freedom through the idea of Christ but criticized its cultish idolatry dogmas. And Tillich also criticized the other end of that spectrum of the spirit: the atheist chronic alienation from being.
Tillich prescribed a middle way and yet remained entirely Christian that was open to other religious experiences. In other words Christianity can be profound within pluralism as it was in early Christianity.
I grew up with Tillich theology, but became increasingly more Jungian over the years to the point that I don’t call myself Exclusively “Christian”. On the other hand if Christianity is as Tillich describes a dedication to the Logos, then I have always been Christian.
