JK Rowling’s books are an outstanding achievement. Her books have contributed to English literature on a par with the greats like CS Lewis and Tolkien.
@Jane Dough As a fundamentalist christian (Lutheran) I must disagree. The books contain many references to the religious climate of the 17th century, sects such as the Seekers, the Grindletonians, the Muggletonians, Rookwood, Perkins, etc. The crushing of seven seals before the defeat of the evil one, two Bible verses quoted, even a reference to king Hezekiah's seal (the golden snitch, the winged key), an ancient king of Judah. There are also references to occult things like the hand of glory, chess symbolism, serpents, geomancy, the philosopher's stone and grave soaking (Voldemort's resurrection spell on his father's grave), however these things are typically denounced as evil! "[...]the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worst for them." There's only one instance where an occult reference is presented as uncontroversial, and that is ghosts of Harry's relatives. They are friendly but ultimately have no power and can't assist Harry in any way, in reality they are only Harry's memories of them that he keeps in his heart so he's not even communicating by spiritism. That said, it is important to make the distinction between a book with christian themes and a christian book. I understand the people who won't read it to their kids because the religious references are so obscure and these topics just don't work for Sunday school because kids might misinterpret it as an endorsement of witchcraft.
