I remember taking off in this majestic aircraft - lifting off gently from the still waters then slamming brutally into a nearby forest along the shore. Good times.
The biggest battle of the Felixstowe being on 4 June 1918 when three, circling over a fourth that had landed on sea after fuel failure, were set upon 14 German W.29 seaplanes, shooting down six without loss to themselves!
this thing looks like it should be converted into a pleasure craft, or personal transport. just need to give it a glass roof and some nice chairs. proper job.
Magz, I just love watching your videos. Funnily mostly about games I'd never play but it's still a pleasure watching you play them. The commentaries are just spot on with a mix of comments on the game itself, some history and explanation of what you're trying to do. Well done.
Love seaplanes too, but it always amazed me that no seaplane manufacturer incorporated a retractable rudder to assist in sea movements. However that is one beautiful plane.
Only one thing: The "Kriegsmarine" (Kreegsmarine sounds better than Craigsmarine btw ;-))existed from 1935 onwards, during WW1 the german Navy was called "kaiserliche Marine" (And I have no clue how to type out how you would pronounciate that) that would be the imperial Navy.
When I was talking about the Kriegsmarine I was talking about WW2 U-boat operations. Just pointing out an often forgotten fact that It wasn't the first time German U-boats had hunted in the channel. There operation and tactics had been established, Tested and proven effective during the first World War.
Well, you said that the the Kriegsmarine didn't do this for the 1st time, they have done it all the way through WW1... I'm obviously not a native english speaker but in german language that would mean that they (- >the Kriegsmarine) did it. Which implies they were existant. But that doesn't matter, I just tried to share some info in case you didn't know. :-)
Yes I admit I worded that poorly, Should have been clearer. And no, Thank you for bringing it up, Hopefully people will read the comments and see the info as well. :)
Well, while we're on it... the part of a sub you referred to as a "coning" tower is actually a "conning" tower. Other than these hiccups, and very well done narration, smooth enough to be professional!
G'day Magz! If you're looking for a classification on that convoy cruiser, I would best estimate it's one of the Arethusa class of light cruisers- there were 8 of them built, oil-fired. I say this due to the three funnels (the earlier class, the Town, had four, and later classes had 2 save the C-class), and the lack of any significant aft mast. As for which ship out of the class she could be... any I believe. Arethusa herself had been sunk the year previous. The "cruiser" with the floodlight isn't a cruiser, at least if the silhouette is to be believed. It looks to be any ol' freighter.
How'd I miss this upload? I really enjoy the Rise of Flight videos - great work Magz. This game is one of my favorite by far. Just wish more people would do the on-line :) Always a great time. Thanks for the upload.
Such a beautiful plane. Regarding cockpit visibility: I'm not sure, but from the look of it, in addition to guidance from the forward gunner, the pilot may have been able to improve his forward visibility simply by standing up. It is after all a very stable platform, with an open cockpit... I wonder if that works in trackIR/VR...
Really love this story telling style of your videos.. just awesome way of telling kids some history and great story to boot . 10/10 ... there should be an option to give stars and thumps up for vids.
With the current SALE going on, and prices at 2/3 OFF now is the time to buy - at least until the next sale. If you start off with nothing but the free download and purchased everything = $134 instead of $391 (close enough). Instead of buying 3 A/C at regular price you can now grab 9 A/C - triple the FUN. Love the vid - MORE please! : >)
Hey Magz, I think I remember pilot's saying they use to quarter across the track of the submarine. so they could see it for longer, since it would be to the left or right of the nose of the plane. and since you aim where the sub "will be" not where it is. It made a lot of sense to me. just something I saw watching videos. I miss COD, and the young flying officer you did for a bit also. great videos as usual. keep up the fun
even as a console peasant. this was so enjoying to watch. although the graphics dont seem so amazing compared to wt. but it still felt very emersive just watching. very nice sortie too :) maybe more?
Nice video. Just FYI: the only "kriegsmarine" in WW1 was the Austrian Navy. The German Navy was called the "Kaiserliche Marine". Also, records indicate only one U-boat was destroyed by aircraft in WW1.
Somehow this video was peaceful and relaxing, except for the descriptions of Uboat attack survivors dying of exposure and Uboat crews often going down with all hands, but as the Romans say "hoc est bellum "- this is war. Love the vids as alaways keep it up!
Wish I could get the channel edition to work for me. Damn stupid idea not being able to have an easy linking process to link the steam version to disk.
What does RoF have for single player? I've been looking for a game to succeed Red Baron 3D for ages, and this comes highly recommended. But as far as I knew, it was multiplayer only.
There is something about seaplanes, isn't there? (Flying in a Catalina remains on my bucket list) The Glenn Curtiss museum in New York has a beautiful reproduction of a Curtiss "Seagull" from around the same period.
No I meant the Royal Air Force, The RAF officially came into service in April 1918, The same time the Royal Flying Corps was dissolved. Prior to the RAF the Royal Flying Corps didn't operate Felixstowe F.2A's, They where solely operated by the Royal Naval Air Service. Edit: As to your second question, Honestly Grab what ever looks most interesting too you, All the campaigns are great as are the aircraft.
Probably minimal at best - smallarms, possibly a MG - and remember that AA in ww1 tended to be very hit or miss anyhow. Most ww1 U-boats were comparitively tiny, and simply lacked the space to carry much up top.
I didn't use the sight to bomb and sink a U boat, I just flew in quite low and slammed the bomb in a slight dive into the conning tower. Then I peeled off attacked another which I missed and went home. It is really easy to land
Hey Magz could you possible increase the whole video volume next time slightly please? I can understand everything you say but it being a little more sound filling would be a little better :P Plus for those that find it to loud they can decrease it
craazyy22 I'm sure he could increase it even if slightly without peaking to much. It's just most of his videos are slightly louder, and considering this was quite an historical and educational one it kinda sucks that all :/
TheMarineGamer IGGHQ download the audio file and check it in Audacity. the highest spikes are at 95% which make him able to increase the audio with 5% without reducing audio quality. which is bearly nothing.
i do also love how the first aeroplanes weren't designed to be massively aerodynamic, engines; no cowling, just a big flat radiator, the pilot has a completely open "cockpit", if you can even call it that
Any chance of an update on what you will continue? Star Citizen is always a win The Long Dark is spooky as fuck Above the Cliffs of Dover was a personal favorite

That's bad ass.
So it's the Sunderland of WW1 :P
Source?
Trey Lower the book 'The Encyclopedia of the World's Combat Aircraft'.
this thing looks like it should be converted into a pleasure craft, or personal transport. just need to give it a glass roof and some nice chairs. proper job.
Viridis Lux it looks like a ww1 pby Catalina
Don't forget the tea maker.
Magz, I just love watching your videos. Funnily mostly about games I'd never play but it's still a pleasure watching you play them. The commentaries are just spot on with a mix of comments on the game itself, some history and explanation of what you're trying to do.
Well done.
I really enjoy these kinds of videos. Where you do historical missions and get a few interesting facts. Thank you for this good well made content
RoF is seriously one of the most underrated sims out there. Can't believe it's 8 years old now...
8:14, was that the sub?
Love seaplanes too, but it always amazed me that no seaplane manufacturer incorporated a retractable rudder to assist in sea movements. However that is one beautiful plane.
Exactly. Floatplanes didn't even have water rudders until the 1940s, to my knowledge.

The historical parts are the best. Good video Magz
"mission orders are to sink it" well easy enough then, just ask them nicely, maybe give them some cookies, and im sure they'll be willing to dive. :P
This plane remind me of the PBY Catalina, maybe same design
Really interesting... And your technical narrative was very good... Thanks
Next time fly the felixstowe with the 57mm davis gun.
The true AC130 of WW1

Really cool way to combine a history lesson and aircraft showcase.
Excellent Historical narration!!!
Great work, and flight sim learning, lad!!
Thanks again for sharing.
Thank you so much magz, i've been waiting for a ROF episode for a long time
Such a nice looking, graceful aircraft. Thanks for the great video magz.
That was some nice flying Sir.
Wing Nut Wings had a beautiful kit of this wonderful aircraft.
You can still buy the kit if you know where to look

Nice to see the Felixstowe on your channel. When I want a nice relaxing fly out this is my go-to aircraft :)
Thanks Magz. I was wondering what to write about for next weeks article, and I've had a F.2 article planned for some time, think I'll do that.
superb video and narrative thank you!!!
The historical parts of your videos are really great, i learned allot in this!
Love the videos and the history lessons within. Keep up the work, I'll keep watching!
Oh man I love your videos! Just watching your videos make me feel calm and satisfied. You have my approval of greatness ^^ !
Yes!!! I'm so glad to see rise of flight again on your channel!!! love your videos!! keep it up.
Perfekt zum einschlafen...
Naval warfare involving a flying boat and a submersible boat. Real futuristic stuff for the time I’m sure.
This Is probably the best DLC for me
Lovely old plane! 👍
great video magz, would like to see more flying boats on your channel :D
You just earned yourself a subscriber
Nicely done sir

: >)
Gotta love Rise of Flight.
I like this style of video, please do more!
bringing steampunk swagger to combat the huns with no flair. im quite sure this plane had a tea pot onboard
Very interesting and informative.
Aaaaah, a peaceful bit of viewing on a Christmas eve... ;-)
Terrific video very informative thank you.
Hope to see more of this game
Seems like something you need to have a lot of patience for. Which seems highly appropriate.

Great video....would like to see one on the LFG Roland C. II.
That light cruiser escorting the troop transports looked like a Caledon class.
Hey Magz can u make more of these types of video.
REALLY ENJOYED THIS ONE!!
It's funny that you ask that considering my plans for the new years.
Big plans, eh?
Very nice episod and a beauty of a plane!
Love it as well, great stuff indeed.
I believe this is the plane they used to make the sounds of the LAAT in Star Wars Attack of the Clones.
Fascinating
Wonderful video as always. I learned a thing or too, as well.
even as a console peasant. this was so enjoying to watch. although the graphics dont seem so amazing compared to wt. but it still felt very emersive just watching. very nice sortie too :) maybe more?
Excellent
Very good video
very good, fun to see
04:02 How do you switch to gunner seat?
Needs an aft bottom gun. It has 2 so far. One fore one aft but the bottom is completely unprotected it seems. Needs a bottom aft and bottom fore gun.
Yayyy! Rise of Flight!
Just subbed to your channel Magz, you seem to enjoy the same games as myself, keep up the good work and hello from Scotland. :)
Amazing video as all ways magz but what happened to the Above the Cliffs of Dover series? It was your best work
Nice video. Just FYI: the only "kriegsmarine" in WW1 was the Austrian Navy. The German Navy was called the "Kaiserliche Marine". Also, records indicate only one U-boat was destroyed by aircraft in WW1.
Good video!
Reminds me of a catalina but ww1
Probably was an important inspiration for the later Catalina.
You are so relaxing to listen to. xD
8:03 what's that?
Somehow this video was peaceful and relaxing, except for the descriptions of Uboat attack survivors dying of exposure and Uboat crews often going down with all hands, but as the Romans say "hoc est bellum "- this is war. Love the vids as alaways keep it up!

love. more please! :D
YAY ROF also did you mean the royal flying corps?
and I was wondering which dlc would you recommend getting e.g channel battles ,bloody april ect?
No I meant the Royal Air Force,
The RAF officially came into service in April 1918, The same time the Royal Flying Corps was dissolved.
DICE please, we need this...
Will you get back to your Cliff of Dover series?
where is the spit on dcs?
wouldn't the submarine have some form of AA or did this particular sub not have any?
Probably minimal at best - smallarms, possibly a MG - and remember that AA in ww1 tended to be very hit or miss anyhow. Most ww1 U-boats were comparitively tiny, and simply lacked the space to carry much up top.
Hey magz, i'd love a ROF video on the w12
I didn't use the sight to bomb and sink a U boat, I just flew in quite low and slammed the bomb in a slight dive into the conning tower. Then I peeled off attacked another which I missed and went home. It is really easy to land
Is it me or does the front fuselage view look like a Welington bomber?
Can you do a review on the Conqueror MK.2 please.
An airplane with a steering wheel. Think I've seen everything the internet had to offer today.
I love older planes
How deep underwater could they go?
this U-boat? probably around 50 meters, give or take obviously. thats what Wikipedia says anyway. :P
Didn't know that Greg had a navy,...or do you mean Kriegsmarine xD ?
Good video m8. There was only one RNAS. You said 'services'.
Hey Magz could you possible increase the whole video volume next time slightly please? I can understand everything you say but it being a little more sound filling would be a little better :P Plus for those that find it to loud they can decrease it
It is caped. you can not simply increase sound over 100%. you can level it but that sounds shit.
craazyy22 I'm sure he could increase it even if slightly without peaking to much. It's just most of his videos are slightly louder, and considering this was quite an historical and educational one it kinda sucks that all :/
TheMarineGamer IGGHQ
download the audio file and check it in Audacity. the highest spikes are at 95% which make him able to increase the audio with 5% without reducing audio quality. which is bearly nothing.
craazyy22 And going only another 5% over those highest peaks which wouldn't often be that close apart wouldn't be much either :P
what was the intro engine sound from?
what engine i should say
i do also love how the first aeroplanes weren't designed to be massively aerodynamic,
engines; no cowling, just a big flat radiator,
the pilot has a completely open "cockpit", if you can even call it that
magz how fun of a game do you think Rise of flight form 1-10 ?
Watching this gave me PTSD from Silent Hunter haha
Im having trouble with joining the stream..... do ya think ya can help,
What would you recommend for a newbie, WW1 with VR? Appreciate your suggestion... ? ( something quite plug and play)
At the moment there really is nothing, VR support hasn't been added to RoF yet or to any other WW1 game.
Cool!
As a miner detail they should show the pilot's hands on the wheel.
magz, are you still going to continue with the second channel idea, or are you waiting until NBN arrives?
it wood be cool to play wow ships with u
Any chance of an update on what you will continue?
Star Citizen is always a win
The Long Dark is spooky as fuck
Above the Cliffs of Dover was a personal favorite
Hi magz
