Great breakdown! One quick fact I would like to point out, though: Elsa is not the first animated disney princess to become queen! Princess Kida of Atlantis became queen in Atlantis: The Lost Empire! She became queen after her father passed at the end of the movie. :). I understand that she probably doesn't count, though, as she is not an "official disney princess" (which I feel is quite a missed opportunity, as she is an awesome character). This is due mostly to Atlantis being one of Disney's dark age films, and thus not performing well at the time, and not being as well-known today. If you are not familiar with Atlantis, I highly suggest it! It was one of my favorites growing up, and still is to this day!
@@HowardHoMusic I am happy to help! Atlantis flew under a lot of people's radar, and so is not as well known. It is a fantastic movie, though. It was very mature for the time period, and breaks the typical Disney mold. The fact that Kida was not accepted into the disney princess pantheon means it is less noticeable as well. :) Rambling aside, I love your insights and break downs of music theory, and hope you are encouraged to keep making awesome content! Have a safe and happy new year!
Technically Anna and Elsa aren’t “official” Disney princesses either, remarkably! For the opposite reason, funnily enough: the Frozen brand is so profitable on its own that making them part of the Disney Princess brand would actually lower its profitability
Anna was my favourite since the first, yes Elsa is magic and belts some awesome tunes, but Anna grows up essentially alone, goes after Elsa, AND up the north mountain without magic, and has the strength to keep going. Anna is my inspiration and has been especially since the first lockdown 💗
Thanks for doing this one as well! I love Anna. She is so strong. In a way she is much stronger than Elsa. Elsa has magic but Ice is fragile. Anna has no magic but her will, determination and love can move mountains. She will never give up and even when hope is gone she will find it again. She is a fighter. Sometimes you can only do what is right in frong of you, put out the biggest fire just as her song suggests. She is really amazing. Elsa is literally a spirit and ice at that. She is free and ethereal, being queen never suited her. She was introverted and the royal garments first constricted her and then that red/pink/purple dress made her look really pale. Anna was awkward at first and looking for change. She was also very reliant on others. When she started to rely on herself and try to change things herself she suddenly developed charisma that comes from loving people, being extroverted and most importantly being confident and willing to do the work yourself. Wanting to do the work. She became a leader. Neither the crown nor the dark clothes constrict her because in her burns a fire that shines through visible to all. One of my closest friends really relates to Elsa, her social anxiety/awkwardness (don't wanna misdiagnose anyone, even a fictional character) and how introverted she is. Her self discovery. I can relate to Anna so much more. She grew up in a private family. Very introverted whereas she is very extroverted, impulsive, adhd with no one to teach her how to "fit in" while still remaining who she is. When she is alone and lost she does not give up, no matter how dark it is. Because to give up means accepting the end and we're not there yet, we've barely started. Elsa goes on to live a more solitary life whereas Anna lives her life in constant connection to others. With an open ear for her people and willing to serve her country as best she can. I'm not a princess or a queen but I want to work with people, be there for them in their hardships. Because pain has made me stronger and my heart is big enough for a lot of people. My family... it's not for them. I've often felt lonely around them, not because they didn't love me but because they didn't show it the way I really needed them to. But it's ok. I can be strong and go on. And when it's hard, I'll just focus on the next step. The next right thing. Thank you Anna for finally being that character I can relate to. Finally, at 24 I can see myself in someone else. It feels nice to "know" someone else like me.
I know the song "spare" was not used, but .... in that song Anna feels afronted she is "Just the spare" but.... Elsa starts being crowned , and gives up the crown twice, by trowing the tiara away, then by giving the title to Anna. Anna starts as "The spare", then she is "the heir" as Elsa does not have children , then Elsa gives up her crown and Anna is "the Queen"
These films may have ended up being overhyped, but I DEFINITELY love them for how both sisters change and grow up and into their true callings! While most Disney princess movies have the protagonist reach her "calling" in an hour or so, the two Frozen movies take the time to develop character arcs that last long enough for both sisters to actually GROW UP. That's worth liking these movies for.
The fact that you keep getting me to watch frozen related content is impressive, lol I came for the Hamilton, stayed for the music analysis, and all of it too
If Frozen was about the importance of being together, Frozen II is about something you don't hear praised as often: the importance of being apart. Elsa loves Anna, but she's happier among nature and among their mother's people than she is ruling, and that's okay. Anna learns that she doesn't have to always rely on Elsa. Kristen Bell has rightly said Anna's story in Frozen II is about overcoming co-dependence. By the end, she's become her own person: the queen of her country. The sisters will always love each other, but that doesn't mean they have to be together all the time.
This is bullshit in a million different ways. I absolutely loathe this tendency to call anyone who wants to be near their loved one co-dependent. This recent trend of separating beloved pairs (frozen, how to train your dragon, etc) for the hell of it needs to die. It completely and utterly devalues the whole story.
@@paloma4444 how to train your dragon's resolution of separation was utterly fucking stupid, but it's all right in frozen. you could tell elsa was always the loner type
I wouldn't say Anna is co-dependent, but it is definitely good for her to learn to be her own self without having Elsa as parameter or a condition to her being. I think their separation in the first movie was quite traumatic, unexplained and left Anna feeling lonely and cut apart from Elsa. She went after her sister because she wanted to share her pain, her joy, make her feel seen and loved, just the way Anna herself craved. Their separation in Frozen II is healthier. They reconciled, they're closer, they've learned to share time and space and companionship, but now they can also learn what it's like to be themselves without worrying this separation will get them back to square one: both feeling lonely, unheard and unseen. I'm a sucker for the Frozen franchise because both me and my middle sister are just 2 years apart, we're from the same father and, despite fighting a lot as kids, we became best friends through the years. She's now studying in another country and we'll probably spend months if not years without seeing each other face to face, doing different stuff, meeting different people, and overall growing without being so close together as to see changes happening and maturity coming along. It's honestly a bit heartbreaking to know I won't be there to see stuff happening and changing, nor will I be able to help her much, but it's good because I can go on with my life without really worrying anymore if we'll keep being close to each other. I know we will; physical distance and having two different lives didn't get in the way of us being able to rely on each other and trusting each other. I've just basically lived through the 2 Frozen movies and it feels so fucking relatable whenever I watch them. 😂 watching Elsa's and Anna's videos is making me miss her so damn much and I just talked to her some hours ago, man. Media about siblings always get some emotional reactions from me, that's for sure.
When Anna makes the decision to do the next right thing (at 2.42 in the song) she sings 'so I'll walk through this night...' and the key gets modulated by a half-step I think it was. She is doing the next right thing, taking the next step, and not a big step. Just the next right thing.
It doens‘t matter, if the Lopezes placed every note deliberately with the deeper meaning in mind or if they just felt the notes were the right ones to use, they are both still geniuses! I just love their music! ❤️
My mind was blown when you said The Next Right Thing has a similar melody to Do You Wanna Build A Snowman. This is SO insightful! Thank you so much for this video. Frozen 2 is one of those few movies that just pumps me with huge emotions (in the best way)!
I also think it’s interesting to discuss that “Do You Wanna Build a Snowman,” “Let it Go,” and “For the First Time in Forever” all share the same melody.
This is giving me all of the feels for Anna. I honestly wonder sometimes if Anna gets overshadowed by Elsa, but you have definitely proven me wrong with this video. So now I want a Kristoff musical analysis! It would be a great birthday present for me! (hint hint: My birthday is in January ;-P)
I dont wanna sound greedy but I'd love it if you did an analysis on the tangled movie and then the series and how rapunzel grew musically throughout the series because it feels like rapunzels songs really started to become stronger throughout the entire series
I always identified with Anna since the first frozen that came out when I was a teenager, with the hopeful naivety, stubborn persistence. I was too stubborn to let myself feel how much I was hurting, and seeing how Anna let herself hurt after Hans helped me as well, the only difference is I never got past the hurt. It would hurt and I would shove it back in the bottle until it bursts. “Do the next right thing” is very important to me, but it’s two sides of my mind at war. One says the next right thing is to prevent my family from dealing with my burden, and the other side says the next right thing is to keep pursuing help. It’s just hard.
I _knew_ there was a reason I felt _Do the Next Right Thing_ was the most impactful song in the whole movie when I walked out of the theater after my first viewing. Thanks a ton for breaking it down for me!
Frozen 2 blew my expectations out of the water! It even made the two main characters, especially Anna, more relatable, which is why I have more of an emotional connection to this movie than the first.
This made me emotional. Literally, everything Frozen related had made me get emotional and I've never been that emotional with anything before. When I was a kid, I loved Frozen, I remember when me and my best friend used to play Frozen during Primary school, heck Frozen and Winx Club are the two things that brought us together. I relate to Anna a lot. My friend is going through a lot, she hasn't been I school as much and although I hang out with other friends, I still miss her. I try to get her to come into school, I brought her a present and she said that she would go to school, but when that day came she didn't, I snapped at her and drama happened for about a day until after school. My parents tell me that I'm nearly 16 and will start going to my higher education, they say that I should become more independent. Hang out with my other friends. My brother is two years old and he can get a bus, my school ain't that far so I don't take busses. I relate to Anna a lot.
When I clicked on this, I had no idea that it would be relevant to one of my current classes called resilience in healthcare. But I can see the connection to Anna's resilience and how a person can resolve to build themselves up by doing the little things that matter. I might share this with my classmates if it comes up because it seems like it might have a lot to do with building your resilience.
Anna is my favourite disney princess. Her journey is a very realistic and relatable one. Her character growth is huge and I don't think people talk about it enough. Frozen 2 had some of the best songs compared to the original frozen songs.
I know I was so surprised when I heard the next right thing for the first time while watching the movie. The melody seemed perfect, and this explained why! Thank you, these series really make me look at music in a different way
Honestly the first time I watched it I was too busy bawling to notice anything so kudos to you; my theater was a mix of crying adults and confused kids. lol
Anna’s arc means so much to me. I’ve dealt with depression, anxiety, and loss, and it was deeply meaningful to see that represented so beautifully in this film.
I had tears watching this. I have loved Anna for seven years, so seeing this made my night. I know absolutely nothing about musical notes and such, but the way you explained everything made it extremely enjoyable. I'll make sure to watch the rest of your Frozen content! And yes, Anna is underrated as all heck. I agree with almost all the comment section on that. Like, criminally underrated.
Quick point, the Rapunzel in wreck it Ralph wasn't the same Rapunzel as the one from Tangled just another version of the base character which was an avatar for a game. That's why this version had the hair.
This song was so powerful to me when I watched frozen 2 and I heard everyone talking about Elsa’s songs and kristoffs fun lost in the woods one and I always felt like defending that this song is so much better than people gave it credit for! It’s so underrated! So glad you guys explained this for people! Totally agree! Especially how Disney said they need to put this song in!
I'm so glad you did another Frozen 2 video!! There's not enough appreciation for what I consider to be one of the best animated movies of the decade. I am a recent art school grad and was an animation minor and all my peers thought I was nuts for saying that I thought Frozen 2 was genius. They're all cowards and fools.
As much as I love singing along with Elsa's songs in Frozen 2, Do the Next Right Thing is so special and important to me I can never get through it without choking up. I've dealt with anxiety all my life and it really came to a head for me a few years ago when I started college, I entered a really deep state of depression my second semester and while I was able to move past it and am in a much better place now I still struggle with those emotions at times. Watching this song in theaters I full on bawled in my seat because of how connected I felt to Anna in that time, everything about that scene felt like it was written specifically with my previous struggles in mind and seeing her overcome was another really strong reminder to me that I can too. I literally started crying again writing this, that's how important that experience was for me. One of the many reasons I hold Frozen 2 in such high regard.
Loved the video. Was also listening to All is Found again and I would also argue that the line about "Can you brave what you most fear? Can you face what the river knows?" is also for Anna. Because what she most fears is losing Elsa, and when the river shows her what happened, she also loses Elsa!
I love Disney and singing and music so much, but these videos really help me understand the emotions I feel while listening to music and everything I miss or don't look much into on my own, and I love that ! Plus you also make me wanna start studying music and music theory, which is something I've wanted for a long time but never actually got around to do 😹 Thank you so much, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the growth of your channel !
When I think of the melody on Anna's "...is one that I can make," I start to hear On My Own in my head. So then the mention of Anna singing her resolution a capella, or *on her own* really hits hard
I haven't watched the video yet but I'm sure it's awesome, thank you for making this! As a Frozen fan, it was such a pleasure to find your explanations about the sisters and their glow up expressed through music 💙
I’m nitpicking a nit pick but Rapunzel’s hair grows back in Rapunzel’s tangled adventure and it’s another major plot point. But she does cut it again so
Man, my late watching of Encanto brought me here. Thanks so much. It is so satisfying to learn how the musical composition is a subtle narrative which supports the storyteling emotionally
I am absolutely blown away. I love analyzing tv shows/movies and Frozen is one of my favorite franchises ever. This is so in depth and everything thing makes perfect sense. Thank you for making this!🥺
While watching the movie I had this feeling that Anna actually will also get the elemental powers... The way she interacts with Gale at the end... interesting :))
It could also be seen as a sign of her embracing her northuldran heritage while staying at arendelle, since the people of her mother are shown to live in friendship / with the aid of the spirits, despite not having elemental powers of their own.
Anna is just awesome😊😊 Elsa isolated herself from her and without knowing the reason still anna saved the life of elsa really anna has a pure heart.. Everyone's just praising elsa but for me anna is the best.. Independent🥰.. Cute 😍.. Beautiful ✨and really like us.. Like real ppl .. Doesn't have power and all but still amazing👍

Thank you for this video! That's why I love Anna so much - I think she's so much more relatable. And the fact that she doesn't have any superpowers and still keeps fighting for her loved ones and herself is a really good example for all of us.
This video made me cry. I love Anna so much and the Next Right Thing is my favorite song of frozen 2 because of how different it is regarding tones and even though she was at her lowest she built herself back up by remembering to do the next right thing. I connected to this song in a way not many of my friends understand and breaking it down like this really touched me. I thought you breaking down the music was really interesting and I learned so much. Thank you for making this video.
this was posted so long ago now but i just have to thank you 💖 frozen is my hyperfixation but it's also a franchise that came to me when i was at my lowest, and it carries me day to day still at 24. i thought i had seen all of the behind the scenes and explanations for these movies that there was and you've opened my eyes to an entire new world of analysis. when the melody becomes random, i immediately teared up and had to pause the video. i love this franchise and their creators so much already, it's incredible that i'm still discovering just how much love & effort is put into them. thank you so much for this
i’ve loved frozen since it came out and anna has always been my favorite. i used to hate “the next right thing” and thought anna deserved a better song, considering how amazing elsa’s were, but this video showed me how important it actually is, so thank you
I dont know why your videos always make me cry (in a good way)! There's such a lovely element of hope in them, plus the element of discovery (me, who knows next to nothing about music) that these songs have such beautiful layers to them that you are opening my eyes to. (just like the one you did about your grandfather and Mulan, which was your masterpiece in my opinion).
First off, can we all just applaud the Lopezes for their spectacular work! I already thought Anna's character arc was incredible. But all the details and analysis you talked aboutade me love it even more. (I may have shed a tear when you said the ending melody in The Next Right Thing was the same as Do Want to Build a Snowman)
Man, I really love your videos. I commented on your past vid about how I noticed many changes involving Elsa, but darnnnn I completely forgot about Anna and this is truly amazing!
I just need to say I rediscovered this video a year later and it was just as awesome and beautiful to relisten to as it was the first time. Thx for your care and sharing
I think it's weird and funny. At around 17:45 the narrator said "All you need is do the next right thing" then after that I got Disney+ ads where Captain America yell "Avengers, Assemble!" So what I hear is "All you need is do the next right thing. Avengers, assemble!" It's fit 😂.

Kristen Anderson Lopez and Robert Lopez be watching like “yeah I totally meant to do that!”
Wow, glad you corrected us on this! I knew there had to be one out there. Serves me right for never having seen Atlantis, but I will get on that.
Rambling aside, I love your insights and break downs of music theory, and hope you are encouraged to keep making awesome content! Have a safe and happy new year!
Technically Anna and Elsa aren’t “official” Disney princesses either, remarkably! For the opposite reason, funnily enough: the Frozen brand is so profitable on its own that making them part of the Disney Princess brand would actually lower its profitability
@@HowardHoMusic Rapunzel becomes Queen in the seaquel TV series
@@HowardHoMusic Please make a video on the background score of Frozen 2 and how better it is from first frozen movie
Anna was my favourite since the first, yes Elsa is magic and belts some awesome tunes, but Anna grows up essentially alone, goes after Elsa, AND up the north mountain without magic, and has the strength to keep going. Anna is my inspiration and has been especially since the first lockdown 💗
I would just like to pause at 7:01 to point out how ironic that we essentially began 2020 by singing "Into the Unknown" and "The Next Right Thing"
Is that from the broadway?
@@timefliesaway999 for the movie, the story changed and some songs were not used.
The fact that you keep getting me to watch frozen related content is impressive, lol
I came for the Hamilton, stayed for the music analysis, and all of it too
Haha, I wondered about that, whether I'd be able to interest my Hamilton peeps to join me on Frozen. Glad to hear that you did.
Well-put!
@@hollynotholy are you not aware of how massively over-protective anna is of elsa?
Yeah, when I figured that one out, I was actually surprised. The similarity was hiding in plain sight!
Lost In The Woods alone ended the career of all Disney songs, don't @ me
One Thing i Truly Love about frozen 2 is how both Sisters grew in such meaning full ways

anna is the most relatable princess EVER and in my opinion, she grows and evolves more than any disney princess
Anna is one of my favorite Disney characters, mostly because of “The Next Right Thing” as it’s similar to the way I try to live my own life
I dont wanna sound greedy but I'd love it if you did an analysis on the tangled movie and then the series and how rapunzel grew musically throughout the series because it feels like rapunzels songs really started to become stronger throughout the entire series
Tangled the Series had some of the strongest musical numbers I have ever had the privilege of listening to.
Wow, I'm hearing a lot about this series, and so maybe I will...
Elsa was the first Disney princess to become a queen.
Kida: Am I a joke to you?
My apologies, Queen Kida.
Actually most of them did become Queens. Like Ariel,Cinderella,Belle,Aurora,Snow white,Jasmine
@@Eliza_woods04 yeah, but they still are not perceived that way

Kida isnt an official princess and Disney also swept that movie under the rug they dont recognize it at all.
I love this! I think this is what's important about these songs and stories, to teach us how to deal with life. Thank you!
Anna is my favourite disney princess. Her journey is a very realistic and relatable one. Her character growth is huge and I don't think people talk about it enough. Frozen 2 had some of the best songs compared to the original frozen songs.
Anna is my favorite character because she's passionate and Fierce and thoughtful to her friends.
I know I was so surprised when I heard the next right thing for the first time while watching the movie. The melody seemed perfect, and this explained why! Thank you, these series really make me look at music in a different way
Honestly the first time I watched it I was too busy bawling to notice anything so kudos to you; my theater was a mix of crying adults and confused kids. lol

The ‘Hope is Gone’ lyric part sent a shiver done my spine🤭 It's just too good
Anna’s arc means so much to me. I’ve dealt with depression, anxiety, and loss, and it was deeply meaningful to see that represented so beautifully in this film.
I have a whole new appreciation for music and film scores, movies and musical directors. Dear heavens I'm crying.
That's why this version had the hair.
i LOVE that line "i don't even hv a mom"..."Neither do we!"....LMAO!!!!
Isn't self-aware Disney great?!
I didn’t expect to be crying to musical analysis
Anna truly is the most well-developed character in the Frozen universe IMO
Nah. They are dumb and stupid if they can't stop for a moment and analyse some story bits.
I always thought that "the next right thing" sounded like another Frozen song. Fantastic
Yes!
