Omonoia is not a "suburb", it's literally the center of Athens geographically.

As a Greek, I find it heartbreaking. Athens, especially the center is a mess. Poor lighting, broken sidewalks, drug addicts, ugly graffiti, seedy neighborhoods. The government, the mayors, don't care since they walk such streets only for election purposes. Your video is good, I had seen a similar one you made in Scampia, Naples. You are doing a good job, I hope things change someday.

You can see how bad the situation is in our society, when people are saying: "come on it's not that bad, junkies won't hurt you, they're just shooting heroin in front of your kid, they just throw away the injection you might step on, come on it's not that bad, i walked there once and i didn't get raped"
This shit has to be fixed, it's not a competition, we lost our humane side and it's taking us downhill

As a former junkie myself I can tell you that we normally don’t hurt normal people, yes there are cases where this happens and it’s sadly really common that junkies would steal from you, but most of us wouldn’t hurt anyone. Most of the time we wouldn’t shoot up in front of kids and in places where this happens, children shouldn’t be there anyway. Normally we plug our needles so that no one will hurt himself on it and people that know they have transferable diseases will care about this even more.
I can only talk about the places I was in and that’s cities in the US and Germany, but I hope it’s at least partly informative and true for where you live. But I have to agree with you that the situation has gotten very bad in our society and this really need to be fixed asap

    • @barblue3
      @barblue3 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

When someone says “they won’t hurt you” means literally that. Of course it’s something that needs to be fixed but drug trafficking and users will never end. About children seen needles and the horrid scene.. all you need to do is pass with your kids once so they know what’s going on and they can put in their brain what’s happens if you end up using substances.. and then use different streets to go about your business. You make it sound like people agree with this terrible situation but I assure you no one in the right mind does.
All over the world in the middle of the city you will encounter streets such as omonia! Get real.

^ These two comments think they’re making some intelligent point when they’re just further enforcing your point…trying to normalize junkies shooting up at children’s parks is sick behavior and a hard attempt at coping with the disgusting place society is in.

@@ATAMorpheus you were responsible and thoughtful, but unfortunately not here in Athens. I’ve seen used needles without any caps on them and I’ve had the misfortune to walk with my son in nicer areas of Athens and see people shooting up right in front of us with no concern. I stopped taking my son to the city center of Athens because he told me how “depressing” it is to go. It’s not all of Athens by all means, the tourist areas are well kept and they make sure no people using drugs are seen on the streets. But in certain areas of Athens at night they are no go areas because they can be dangerous and they are so depressing.

I remember Omonia Square in the 80’s. It was beautiful.
There was an awesome 4 storey building that was full of toys, the cafes were full of elderly men passing their time and families were everywhere.
I was in Omonia a few weeks ago and likely at the time of the making of this video. It saddens me to see the state of Omonia now and this is despite the efforts of successive governments to repair and improve it.
The fact is that Greece like so many other nations is losing its middle class. What will remain will be the lower class and the the very rich. Corruption has destroyed a beautiful country.

My grandparents had a shop near Exarhia (Themistokleous) selling furniture. There were always drugs there near Omonia since the 50's and there were always buyers and sellers. My grandfather bought a car in the early 50's (second hand) and almost every day he got stopped by the police. After 2-3 months of constant police searches he reached to a friend of his, policeman, to find why he was stopped all the time. After some searching, he informed my grandfather that the car belonged to a drug dealer

A few months ago I was in Athens with friends but extended my trip so I could enjoy the city alone. Being that I am familiar with the hotel franchise, I booked a few nights at the Novotel in Omonia. Im 25 and have done plenty of solo traveling, but had no idea that neighborhood had the reputation it has. My taxi driver who was taking me to check into the hotel made me book a different hotel while I was in his cab. He told me he has a daughter and a wife and would hope that someone would suggest the same for them.
I felt real uneasy watching this, because I have seen it through the windows of that cab. your content is incredible, and I have now become a subscriber. Having seen Omonia, I have become more interested in learning about Greece's more recent politics/ history than its ancient history.

It is easy to be disenchanted with the modern world as a whole. I think it is because it is too available and the ancient past seems more magical because one cannot reach it fully like the present. But humans have always been the same by nature

What is unique about the situation around Omonia square, compared to other main cities, is that Omonia is actually the very center of Athens and not some far out suburn where the cursed of the city live. Omonia in the old days, used to be the meeting point for all the people from the countryside visiting the capital and till the early '00s it was also the focal point of celebrations for big sport events (for example the Euro 2004 Greek win). In comparison, it would be as if the streets around Federation Square in Melbourne or Trafalgar Square in London were like that.. Nowadays the center of life has swifted towards Syntagma square and Omonia has lost it's past significance in the life of the Athenians, as a consequence of the rapid decline of the area.

Spanian if you’re looking to do a graf related video on Athens, you should try get in contact with Jorge Sotirios, the author of “Graffiti over marble”; he’s fluent in English and is very open to showing foreigners around and educating them on the street art culture. The book explains how graffiti in Athens is more politically motivated than places that focus purely on design like New York and Sydney.

You just showed a part of what some people here in Greece try to sweep under the rug, bravo. As an Athenian, I can confirm that the situation is real bad. As a woman though, the situation is worse. Every day I have to go to Omonia so I can get to my job, by using a corresponding bus etc, I have been harassed so many times, so many guys just like these on your vid have stalked me, straight up on my face followed me around, approached me, try to steal from me. The worse is when the sky's starting to get darker. All you see are groups of men walking around, looking at you crazily etc, even if you're a man or a woman, doesn't matter, it's not safe. And Omonia is the CENTRE of Athens. The heart of Athens. Unacceptable that a EU city is in such condition, no wonder so many people want to leave from Athens and move on somewhere safer (people who live nearby Omonia because there are other areas in Athens that are relatively safe compared to Omonia and nearby).

The streets near Omonoia are crazy, but the craziest bit is that up until a couple of years ago, one of the drug markets of Athens was outside the Faculty of Law of the University of Athens. There were literally tourists on the front side taking pictures of the Main University building, and people dying from drugs on the side. As an Athenian, this was very disheartening to watch. I think Athens, if properly governed, could be one of the most beautiful European cities. Thanks for highlighting the difference with Exarcheia! There are many beautiful streets in the center of Athens and around Syntagma square it's pretty safe, but Omonoia really is very scary to walk around at night. Even natives avoid it and I think that says it all. I really wish the situation changes in the future.

It’s true that there are junkies openly smoking meth and shooting up heroin on the street, and it’s dirty and there’s a lot of graffiti, but it’s not unsafe like similar looking places in countries like the US or even in France. I’m not sure why, but I was walking around every day and night, to and from the gym, to the shops etc, right by people smoking meth, and never once had anyone even say something to me let alone act threateningly. People seem to keep to themselves and maybe that’s why it isn’t policed, maybe they get to do their thing because they don’t get aggressive with others.

I don't know where you are from, but one difference I've noticed between US and Europe is that Americans treat these people like they're the problem. Being homeless in NYC is almost considered a crime. They punish them and feel cleaner while imprisoning or killing them. In Europe we do not help them either. But we also don't try to hide them in prisons. We just admit we're useless and let this problem grow bigger pretending it's no one's fault. Anyways. You asked whats happening? We all fucking suck. Worse slow drug addicted ppl, divided ppl & more are the easiest to control.
Please I hope people look into it more. Yes immigration is a problem a half Greek sad to see. But if these elites that sway governments both sides and use them as puppets to start wars this wouldn't be as bad. It's so many reasons and if look to top It's not Islamic, Muslims etc. It's Zionist Elites and 1% of elites if this world. Just wait till we get to agenda30 and 2025 to 2030 when next pandemica start and race wars. It's coming get set. But be United with the people not hatred and divided!

I went Athens in 2022 on a solo trip I went there to paint so spent quite some time around at night normally coming back around 1-2am to my hotel. The drug usage was generally out in the open but down side streets when I arrived it was happening during the day and night it was a shock on arrival when first exploring. I saw my first drug alley whilst I was there, at one point there was an addict walking around with a large wooden plank with large spikes and nails in it and this was around 12 in the afternoon which was fucked but you have to walk past like anywhere else stand your ground but be ready to bolt. From what I saw and experienced they keep themselves to themselves.
But if you love graffiti SPECIFICALLY not street art then this is a stop you have to make, for the majority of my trip the people were nice, the women were beautiful and friendly and the food was fantastic you won't find a better Gyros and the cigarettes were dirt cheap around 1.50 euro for a 10 deck. It isn't a city for the faint hearted if you're not from a city or have lived a sheltered life this isn't the place for you but if you have an open mind and spend enough time to explore you will fall in love with the city no doubt.

The difference of Athens compared to the rest of the world is that it is actually SAFE to walk there, these addicts mind their own business. The government knows, the police knows, and they provide specific areas for drug addicts and dealers (of course out of the record). Addicts and dealers are also a way to drop real-estate prices in certain zones, proceed with buying cheap, then gentrify the zones and make them exclusive for high-earners and tourists. Back in 2004 when the Olympics games were held in Athens, all these guys were "moved" to some other locations so that they would not be witnessed by the world until the games were over.

They dont provide areas, they are just reluctant to get to those areas. Because if they apply security cleanliness and health measures to those areas , there are very strong militarized anarchist and far-leftist movements which are supported by media as well, and police plus the government will be labelled as fascist and against the freedoms and democracy strangely,
it is a misconception and mislabelling which gained ground in Greece as an overreaction to the military junta of 1967-1974 (mainly) , the 1980s socialist messaging by goverment secondarily, and the civil war of 1949 thirdly although less so. Also the essense of modern Greek music which is rebetiko has some anti-police songs (since they were Greek refugees and workers in the ports who made the essence of music -- but their issue was only that they smoked weed and so were searched by police not other crimes but the songs bad mouthing the police men remain, after they are mis-interpreted falsely as against all things police. Even the rebetiko singers would be on the side of the police on these occasions)

@@innosantoWhat a load of bs , the anarchist neighborhood is exarcheia and it is much safer than any other neighboring neighborhood , the people that live in exarcheia together with anarchists have protested in the past because police were leading the drug dealers in their neighborhood to undermine it and find a reason to raid the place.
I have seen with my own eyes and there are multiple photos online of police talking to drug dealers and leading them to anarchist buildings and neighborhoods so they can find a reason to raid them it is a known tactic together with policemen wearing civilian clothes with hoods burning and pillaging again so they can blame the anarchists you don't have to believe me you can Google and see the photos yourself.
You can't change the drug addiction problem in the city center by throwing them in jail since jails are full and those people will either die or cause serious commotion in the jail apart from the fact that there is drug dealing inside the jails.
The only solution is to help fund the government programs for drug addiction that help those people and then help your own society , deal with the rampant inequalities so people don't have to end up as drug addicts in the first place.
As we speak the greek government is trying to undermine the already existing drug addiction programs unifying them into 1 poorly funded one.

Soon as we arrived we saw some dude shoot heroin in his genitals & had woman soliciting their services during the middle of the day. After we checked in the hotel, the four of us blokes (mid 20s at the time) decided to go for a walk in the area. Soon after we were being followed so we decided to head straight back to the hotel until check out.

Omonoia, a square which used to be the cultural centre of Athens 50 years ago. The place you would walk with your girlfriend, your children, your elder parents and have a pleasant time. But, times have changed. I lived in Athens for almost 2 decades, and it's heartbreaking. For foreigners that don't know, Omonoia is just the worst of many, many areas in Athens where it's full of drugs, brothels and criminality. We've come to a point that Athenians can't walk on most streets of the whole city when it's dark, because it's more likely to get robbed or attacked than not to. As a Greek Athenian now living abroad, I couldn't feel sadder.

For anyone curious, the sound and air coming from the vent at 7:51 was from the metro, the underground train of the city. There's two lines connecting in Omonoia right there so it's one of the busiest stations in Athens.
I'm Greek, I don't even live in Athens (though I've visited many many times) and the situation is pretty much a well known fact among all of us. We know not to walk through Omonoia at night, especially alone, unless completely necessary. It has been so normalized for us that it honestly was very important to see your reaction to it because, yes, having people do drugs right in the middle of a busy street is very much not normal, and it's a direct result of a declining and uncaring government.

At the very least they will beat the crp out of him, and no footage left. If he doesnt have local friend/s to be accepted in there with controlled footage then he SHOULDN'T go there. He should keep going upwards from omonoia towards patisia, attiki, metaksourgeio, especially plateia vathis and all around it, just be more prepared to fight and defend cause there at night too few non criminal people walk the streets and its not junkies thats the biggest issue.. Gangs of illegal-made-legal immigrants are more active there because they are the 50% of the population in patisia currently . Here an insight from someone living in Athens who had to go through the centre for years every day and that also worked at night during the weekends as a photographer and I had to work in these ppaces with equipment to get to various venues.
Omonia is a pretty safe place for males throughout the day and 80% of it is safe at night too. Females are not as safe moving around especially on alleyways with not many people and at night they need to be in groups of more than 3 to have the basic safety to move around the necessary roads.
The issue with omonia is the interactions you get with junkies and hobos at night and the very rare jumps you can get at night (i have never got jumped there but 1/3 three people who go regularly there at night will have one story of them getting jumped).
Omonia is just a drug hub for the centre of Athens and a few years ago during the economical crisis you would see people shooting shots everywhere even on Syntagma (the starting point of the video with all the tourists) in bright light.
Metaksourgio has two hoods, both used to be dangerous but now the one is filled with wineries and small late night restaurants. The other half where the brothels are is where things get dangerous. Everywhere you step there, there are syringes on the floor, fights break out randomly on the streets, women from brothels rarely come out to call you in, in the few wrong alleyways you ate a danger for the junkies and thus you are in danger too, way too many abandoned demolished houses that become hubs for hobbos.
There is also the area around the train station where lots of burglaries can happen, the street are mostly full of Pakistanis and Bangladeshi people, who they are harmless but the issue is that they wont do anything if you get jumped on or if someone try to pick up a fight with you, they are too scared to do anything.
There is also Menidi. Before i get to Menidi i need to explain the situation with Exarhia. Exharia is a commune of anarchist and sometimes communists people, there are a lot of stores there and the street even though can be full of sketchy people are actually safe. Exarchia is a wannabe Christiania, it is not a fully self governed place and it's just that government doesn't care too much to break it apart, it isn't worth it. Police is incompetent to do anything in small numbers and in big numbers they will be reported by media and the rest, so they are carefull when and what they do in groups because the greek police is under numerous scrutinies and they are completely from anyone under 45. Also Exarhia is simply safe, outside of communities nothing significantly bad takes place there.
Menidi is a Roma self governed area, completely impenetrable by both police and military, absolute anarchism without any anarchist ideologies. Lawless state within a state where drugs are running wild and it is an absolute no no for everyone but the Romas. The ony people who go there are people that buy drugs and they are trusted by the Romas.
Athens is a shithole for the most part and Greece as a whole is defined by Athens. I am not going to defend the rest of Greece because anything positive said for them would overun the negatives and the negatives are urgent. So i genuinely prefer to call Greece as a whole a shithole for the people that don't care to go the extra route to find the good elements.

Spanian thanks 4 doing this mate. I am Greek and have a first cousin who was one of those people shooting up in Omonia. She is one of the few who are still alive and relatively clean ( if u can call methadone clean). I remember as a little girl hearing the lefties predict this because flooding Greece with heroine was the easiest way to take the rebellious youth out in one strike. Afghanistan was the perfect way and heroine made it's way through Turkey , no problem. I have lost many friends in the process, mostly fit men who were of combat age...I wonder why. Today Afghanistan is no longer needed with shit like fentanyl. This kills off the tiny population even faster. Before the economic crisis 2009 you barely saw this kind of thing. But the criminal elites managed to empoverish the Greeks , the IMF & EU ( the global loansharks) have managed to confiscate thousands of homes and as fast as families & lively hoods r destroyed, that's how fast brothels will spring up all around Greece like mushrooms. You are Australian so let me draw a parallel here: Greeks are the aboriginals of this land. They go back thousands of years and are ending up landless and destitute with drug and drinking habits. I wasn't even really surprised... Just changed my way and continued... This sh.. is going along for ages now as now I am close to 50..
Although at times, the situation could be really creepy. Another time, still at a young age, still in the middle of the day, I made a wrong turn and I was surrounded by 20 - 30 zombie-like people, selling, using or debating drugs; a few meters away a block of cops seemed a part of the scenery, probably they would make some profit of it.. Several incidents have happened to me, some of them close to my school, which btw was not close to Omonoia at all (40min away with the bus).

The bus that takes me to Athens from my home in the Attica suburbs finishes its route right up in those alleys in Omonoia. The things I've seen, the people that have mistaken me for a prostitute, the times ive encountered people who clearly need help that i alone cant provide. Its all very unfortunate for my generation. We all know Omonoia is a no go zone, especially at night. Some of my friends have never even been there because of how notorious the place is. My parents and i, because we commute there often for both work and university, have seen it all at least once. Its worse than you think and you always have to keep a low profile. Dont look too much for too long, avoid small streets, try to stay near the streets with bus schedules, hide your phone, keep your mind on trying to get out of those places as soon as possible if you find yourself there and look out for the yellow light streets late at night in those neighborhoods. Sure, they hold a very beautiful urban aesthetic in the right, safer neighborhoods, but they don't guarantee your safety in others, instead they diminish it. Avoid those parts of Athens. Only with a guide, or with enough experience, should you attempt to step into areas like this guy did. And yet it still is NEVER a good idea to walk these streets, be it day or night. Just skip that part of Athens. You have nothing to gain but a reality check for our country's capital.

Pretty accurate report on exarchia . One more reason why drug trafficking is not rampant there (while there is quite a big issue as well) is that in a few cases anarchists have thrown the dealers out

Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety, and illicit pills addiction. Imagine carving heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not, in a couple of years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.

To hear Spanian compare what he was seeing to the block lets you know how fucked the place must be. I went to Athens in 2011. There was dogs all over the street and a lot of graffiti but in amongst it was crazy history, ancient ruins etc. Greece mainland is very different to the islands. Great content Spanian!

You know what's the craziest thing? Omonoia is less than 1km next to one of wealthiest regions in the city and the country as a whole, Kolonaki. And Exarcheia, despite its anarchist character, is very worthy in terms of real estate.

Local here. Indeed the situation in this neighborhood can be shocking. To be exact the epicenter of the streets shown is mostly Metaxourgheio (beyond Omonoia), not Omonoia itself, which is more of a buffer zone. The situation is of course horrible, but to be fair, it's a very sad thing to see, but not really dangerous. Those people are devoid of their dignity but pretty much harmless, based on my on experience. Most of the drug problem is a lack-of-policies problem. The need for centers of safe-supervised drug use has been in the agenda for a decade. Other than that, it might seem weird but many of those run-down neighborhods with the brothels (many of them being legal) are at the same time vibrant places for cool clubs, alternative scenes, cheap ethnic restuarants, bottom-up organizations etc. It is a weird mix. To be clear, this is not about the streets with the shocking drug use.

Hey Spanian, at minute 6:49 of your video is one of the best street authentic Greek food you’ll have in Athens. That place actually went viral on Tik tok and you’d be lucky to get a seat straight way because it’s always full. 4:40 go to Exarchia, you could do an entire video just on Exarchia with the grafitti & counter-culture there. Was my old neighborhood when I lived in Athens, and it's the most unique, I would say. Also, thank you for acknowledging later on in your video that Exarchia is not some super dangerous place. It really isn't & has a far worse reputation than it deserves. A lot of it also politically motivated too. Everybody I know who thinks Exarchia is dangerous hasn't actually been there and hung out there, let alone lived there to know the neighborhood.

GO TO BERLIN! take certain subways in Berlin lately and you have a similar situation on pretty much every station, ALL DAY! At some stations first thing kids see when they exit a Subway before school is someone shooting up. Those people pretty much live in the subway. Walking around in the trains asking for money, buying from the dealers in the subway stations, shooting up / smoking crack in the subway stations. some of them are in such bad medical condition their smell drives whole subway wagons empty. The situation became terrible over the last years. Very surprisingly so far it does barely lead to violence.
