I'm on board with the 4 wood idea. I've had a Ping G10 4 wood for years (maybe 10 or so). It won't be getting replaced unless for a more modern version. I'm in my mid 50's now and building a new bag so to speak and I'm looking at driver, 4wood, 7wood, 4 hybrid, 5-9irons, pw, 54, 58, putter. The gapping works (for me) and it all suits my eye. 👍

I used to only use my 3 wood because I had problems hitting the driver so after 20+ year break playing golf because of family, work and being involved with Boy and Girl Scouts I bought new clubs and said I would try the driver again without success so back to 3 wood. Love you videos they make sense to me, Thank You.

As an ageing golfer I'm stuck with reaching for every par 4 or 5 after the driver. For the 10 to 14 times a round I use it I love the 16° Ping G 3 wood set to 17.5° with a senior shaft. So comfortable, so reliable, not as long as I would like because it leaves lots of chip shots, but the Cleveland SmartSole wedges are another life saver. So why would I want to buy the TM product?

If you are left with those distances, maybe it's time you moved up to silver tees. I play from the green tees and only use my 3 wood 4 or 5 times. Mostly on par 5s.

I'm still gaming my TM M5 3W from 3 years ago. Last Summer I adjusted the loft to 17 deg, it's weakest setting, and it's so easy to reliably hit off the tee and fairway. So I tend to agree with you, adding a couple of degrees loft makes the club more usable and a justifiable addition to the bag.
I don't see anything with the Stealth to upgrade from the M5 though.

@@mariocastillo813 In France we have black tees for scratch golfers, white for very good men and yellow for most other men. For women we have blue for good ladies and red for the rest of the ladies. Where do your silver tees fit into this scheme?
Unfortunately I'm still playing well enough for the WHS to insist I play from the yellow tees.. Whereas some of the guys I play with, even younger than me, get to play from the blue tees some 30 to 60 yards shorter than my yellow tee distances.

    • @mariocastillo813
      @mariocastillo813 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Ian Burton in the US we have gold, blue, green, white, silver, and red. Red tees are mostly for women golfers who are not that good. Silver for seniors who don't hit far. The rest anyone can play. I play in a league and a lot of the seniors I play with are scratch golfers. They don't hit the ball as far so they play off whites and silver tees. I'm at +10 so I play the recommended tees. Some courses even have black tees.

Love the 3wood ( Callaway 15 degree ) I hit it almost as long as the driver with much more control. Use it on long par 3s. We have two 215 meter on the home course and as a second shot on all the par 5s. Have absolutely no problem hitting it off the deck, even better off the first cut of rough. I would get rid of the driver before the 3 wood.

Another very senior golfer (81 y/o) here who has switched to a 12* Cleveland with a ladies flex. I took out my 3 wd a few years ago and replaced it with a 5wd with a senior flex which I'm able to hit very well on tight par 4's and as a fw wood without giving up significant distance. I find the added loft gives me all the distance and accuracy that I need to keep my scores in the mid-low 80's with the occasional high 70's while playing the senior tees.

With my slower swing speed, I generally had issues with 3 wood, so now play two fairways, at 17.25* and 22.5*. Much better results for me. Played my best golf towards the end of last season, having got fit for new irons and wedges (original T200 7-P and 48* and 56* Vokeys), and leaving the driver at home and using the 4 wood as my tee club.

I was going to scroll by this. As it seems the titles click bait. However I’m glad I watched. I’ve done exactly this. I’ve got the G425 16.5 degree. It’s so easy to hit off the deck. It’s the SFT which is easy to draw. Which I need at my course. Important to have clubs that work on your home course. It’s the one you play most.

I took my three wood out and replaces it with the TM mini driver at 13.5 degrees. Was only hitting my old three wood off the tee when driver was off. Found the mini driver was much more straight off the tee and added more distance than my three wood. Very happy with the change.

I had a Taylormade M1 3W in my bag for a couple of years now and just recently pulled it out and replaced it with a Cobra Radspeed which is turned up (+1.0*) to 15.5* and it works really well and the cost came down to $249.99 USD (183.14 PS). As far as use goes, at least 4-5 times per round at my home course. I normally use it on the 3 - Par 5's, a short Par 4, and a long Par 3 with good results. Great video Andy & Hannah as always... :) Save one of those sandwiches for me...

Cobra F9 3W adjusted to 16 degrees. I use it primarily off the tee on holes that require accuracy, or off the deck if I have an absolutely perfect lie on a par 5 fairway. If it's not perfect I'll pull a 7W or a hybrid. Most of the time off the tee I hit driver.

I'm 59 have five low back surgeries. I have lost a lot of swing speed. Most will read this and think I'm crazy but it works very well for me.
Generally do not hit driver, most time I don't even carry one. I hit my 13* three wood off tee on par fours and par fives. I can also hit it very well off fairway. I also carry a 16.5* three wood. More fairway but can use on tee for long par three. The higher loft is good out of rough. Going into greens. I don't carry five wood. I have 7,9,11 woods. I go between my 11 wood and my 28* hybrid. Irons are 8,9,pw,gw,sw.

I'm gaming the sim max 3 (15*) wood and sim
    max D 5 (19*) wood.
I pull the 3 wood maybe 2-4 times a round. Usually to cover the long par 5 second shot. Sometimes 3 wood off the tee with a short par 4, just so I can have a full wedge into the green.
My 5 wood steps in if I need to stay short of any hazards in play for both short par 4's and long par 5's approach shots..
    The 3 wood covers around 230 and the 5 wood 210 .
Currently don't own any hybrids. Swing speed is roughly 98mph with driver. I'm getting roughly 250 total yards. (Sim max 9* std. Loft)
    Thanks for the content.

The course I play, some part 4 are only around 300 yards so I use my 3 wood off the tee. And in the winter I use my 3 wood more off the tee as the holes are slightly shorter so I dont use my driver in the winter.
So in the summer it's about 4 to 5 times off the tee and in winter about 7 to 8 times.
Great video. Love the reviews and advice.

Very jealous of the Camper / day van..
I tipped my 3 wood 15 degree by 1 inch for better control. I have made 270 yards shots of the fairway which when straight has been my best shot of the day, making the green in 2 shots on PAR 5's ,
But I have also a 5 wood 21 degree and found a new love for the 5W straight and 220 yards even the odd 245 yards recorded using Golf Pad Tagged clubs. So its a real 245 yards, not a freak shot on the practice range. 5W just launches with less effort.

But both the Stealth fairways ridiculously expensive. Save some money and get model couple of years old performance difference with right loft will be minimal

I don’t hit miles and so I do carry a 3-wood. Hit it probably 3-4 times a round, off the tee on longish par 3s, or making up distance when I have my all-too-often wayward drives or on a 2nd shot (or sometimes 3rd shot) on par 5. I game a G425 max, 14.5 deg, it’s high launch and easy to hit, no complaints. I probably continue to carry one especially when my driver is misbehaving. I do find my 5 wood distance is not a millions miles away from my 3 wood though.

It's all about gapping and a 16.5 degree 3 wood sits in no mans land for me. Was fit into TS2 3 wood...15 degree and turned down to 14.25. 3 wood serves as almost a "mini" driver for me and gets used at least 8-10 times per round. Only use it from the fairway on the rare occasion. Will be testing the 13.5 degree on my next fitting when Titleist releases their next gen.

I agree love the videos and production. Also now have a new recipe to try as an added bonus
For me 3 wood has been redundant for a long time, but for slightly different reasons
I have a 8 degree driver set to very low loft, then a TM mini driver with the shorter shaft which acts as a 2 wood fairway finder
Then mix and match a 4 wood. 2 hybrid. 2 iron depending on the course/conditions as they go very similar distances just go about it different ways.

Valid point for some golfers which I was one of until I got the right 3 wood (TSi2). Now I'm cutting 2 or 3 shots off scores by being smart when to select 3 wood. 3 risky (driver) tee shots on par 4's in my course (Mullingar)and 2 par 5's for second shot that I'm averaging atleast 1 stress free birdie on those par 5's per round

Andy, I was of the same mind as you and started last season with driver and 5wd. However, on account of a shaft defect, I had to play without driver for 13 weeks. During that time, I picked up a Mavrik Subzero 3wd and discovered not only was it as long as my driver, it was 20% more accurate off the tee (60% vs 40%). It was excellent into the wind and can be used from the fairway. Presently, I'm in the camp of "don't buy driver"!

I used to be the worst driver of the tee you’ve ever seen thus always had to use my 3 wood for my second shot. 😀😀 I can use a driver now (still not long) but the 3 wood is still the most consistent club in my bag. On a warm sunny day it will roll out to 250 yds on occasions. I’m not sure the new stealth would be much better than that. 👍😀

I’m 61 and play off 10. I have played 4 and 7 wood for a couple of years now (instead of 3 and 5) and my game has improved steadily. I recently added 9 and 11 woods to the bag and got rid of my hybrids and my game has improved markedly, as the consistency of contact and trajectory is far better with the lofted fairways … just a thought, it has worked for me big time, but there are still too many players out there buying and struggling with the standard 3 and 5 wood set up. Loft is your best friend as your speed wanes.

I haven't carried a 3w for 2 maybe 3 years. I rarely used it, I just did not have the speed and talent to use it consistently off the fairway, so it was a tee only club.
The reality is that aa 16.5 degree wood is not a 3w (hi loft 3w) but a 4w, for most manufacturers an 18 degree wood is a 5w.
I got fit for a fairway wood back in Nov. I have an average swing speed (95 mph driver). It was a Callaway demo day so I only tried the Callaway range. For me the 4w, 5w, 7w and 9w all went nearly identical distances - within 3 yards on average. I ended up dropping my 5w for the 7w as it was just easier to hit consistently, I could shape the shot a little and the 9w had a stupidly high ball flight.

I am 61 years old. I find a 3 wood to be indispensable to my scoring. I use it at least three times in a normal round. I can still reach some par 5’s in two with a 3 wood. I also have two holes on my home course that call for a 3 wood off the tee. I need the distance, but a driver would put me into trouble. Maybe I am unique. I still enjoyed the video. I have a game improvement 5 iron made by Tour Edge that I can hit in the fairway. I’ve played short par 4 holes with tee shot and second shot on the green using just that 5 iron. It plays distances close to my 3 hybrid.

I’ve had a callaway epic speed 4 wood in the bag but the shaft is a bit light and really needs to be whacked to get it spinning and stay in the air to make it any use for distance. Was thinking in my head of saving up for the stealth plus 5 wood. I have a a cobra one length 4 hybrid I’ve put in the bag I picked up second hand that’s been doing wonders as long as I hit it straight 😆

No 3W in my bag, I have a 5W. My first ever set of clubs had a 4W and hybrid, I can see myself with that combo again at some point. Played on Sunday and got to the 5th when I was dreaming of breakfast . . . a real highlight

Stealth 3 wood is my favorite club in the bag , making every par 5 five achievable, also helping when the tee is tricky and narrow .. don't forget that there is an heavy regulation on driver head, a limition called COR _ coefficient of restitution - that cannot exceed 0,822 .On fairway wood , no regulation, it's the far west, and the twist face of the stealth is very powerfull ... great addition to your golf bag for sure .. Plus you can hit down on the ball , the head is designed fot that !

Just purchased a second hand Taylormade mini driver which replaces 3 wood off tee, and really like Ping 5 (17.5 degrees) and 7 (20.5 degrees) from fairway. Suits my slower swing speed.

I have several 3 Woods from various manufacturers, and all of them are either hosel-adjusted to 16-17º or fixed at a higher loft to begin with (Tour Edge EXS 3 Wood actually 17º). Even when in the bag I hardly ever use them. Most of the time in place of the 3 Wood I have a 17-18º hybrid. Currently using the new Cleveland Launcher XL Halo 3+ Hybrid.

I'm in the camp of spending $300 USD for a completely fixed fairway wood is worse than $400 USD for a much more versatile club in loft, lie etc. I'll spend the extra $100 on the Stealth Plus and make that club a 3 or 3HL myself. With that Stealth you're stuck with what you bought, forever.

Yes my 3 wood is really a passenger, I use it’s comrade to 5 wood a few times in the round. I tried a driving iron but that offers little over my trusty 5 wood. When my six hybrid arrives from Wilson staff .. the 3 wood is being demoted. 😂😂. . The 5 iron may go too and I’ll put another wedge in the bag. I have my driver set to 12.5 degrees which has helped a lot in fairways hit. And the distance is about the same compared to 10.5 . It’s more like a big 3 wood on the tee.

I do carry a 3 wood and use it 3 or 4 times during a typical round on my home course. Most of those times are off the tee on tight par 4's. I rarely ever hit it out of the fairway because I usually hit 5 wood because I get a higher ball flight. It is a redundant club that I could easily replace those 3 or 4 shots with my 5 wood but there's really no other club I need elsewhere in the bag. So for now it stays. I did enjoy the video Andy including the break for breakfast.

I carry a Three Wood. A Cobra F 9 to go with the Cobra F 9 Driver...same shaft and 3 wood set at 14.5 standard..Now on a nine hole course that I have been playing, I hit it 3 times...unless it is a very tight lie and hard pan, then I hit my 3 Hybrid that is a 19 also Cobra....Not driving the ball 300 yards yet so one needs all the help one can get....Thanks....P.S. Love your Van upgrade, would work well for Touring and night time ZZZZ....

Haven't used one for years - I have a 7 wood and a 9 wood which are great for getting the ball up and moving but am currently using 3 hybrids - so much easier. Love the slightly different content (and the van conversion) so please keep it up from my point of view.

Andy, you have some of the best videos on TH-cam and they're a pleasure to watch. Your daughter is absolutely lovely and both of you make a great team. Plus, it's always nice to a parent with their child whether it's golfing, cooking, working, it doesn't matter. That sandwich you made looked yummy, but where I am from (New Jersey) we call that a heart attack sandwich, so it's best not to make a habit of them. I wish you lived closer because I would love to invite you to my club. To get off the golf for a moment, Liverpool are looking good again this year, but that darn Manchester City. They just don't ever seem to lose. I'm still with my club, Stoke City and the jury is still out on them. But they have a chance for promotion. We'll see. Thanks again Andy and looking forward to more great videos!

I carry titleist tsi2 16.5 set at 15.34 and I use it very often on short par 4 off tee, and shorter par 5 where I need to get home in two at about 235-245. I can hit a low stinger with it that gets a lot of roll or a high drawing bomb that sits down quick when it hits ground. I also carry 18 degree same club but set at 19.5 and 1” short of standard and they have a solid 20-25 yard gapping depending on what I’m wanting to do. They both are my two favorite clubs beside my SC putter, that I’ve had since 2012.

Yes I carry a three wood, ping G400 which I can hit well. De lifted it originally but saw a video on you tube Matt fryer I think explains how that can impact shot shape so took it back to 14.5 deg.
Videos are improving all the time, would like as others have said a bit more info on the courses your visiting, costs, club house, how challenging / interesting the course is. Some courses have monotonous layabouts up and down.
Would be interesting to see how you score playing driver of the tee V 3 or 4 wood or a hybrid.

Always carried a 3W since I was a kid. Currently M5 with Accra FX2.0. I cant hit a bad shot with it. Tee or fairway, it seems the slower I swing it the further it goes. I use it at least 4 times a round at home, More if the wind is up or tees are forward. Recently paired it with the same in the 5w, yet I dont like TM drivers. The two tone on the larger head is too much. I like things black and shiny.

Great video , something to ponder ... Safe and accurate beats bomb and gouge everytime and took me years to come to that conclusion . Accuracy trumps distance , a 80% iron swing trumps 100 percent iron swing . After 40 years of playing this great game and being a scratch player , I find the 3 wood actually brings down scores the more you incorporate into your game and was instrumental from being a 8 handicap for most of my golf career to a scratch in the last 10 years ... Why ? Its just more accurate which is what bring scores down and can go almost as far as a driver . I know it goes against the modern day distance craze but the modern day driver is the most dangerous club in the bag for ruining your score , yeh its the funnest club in the bag , thats the trouble . I could score just as well and play par golf leaving the driver home . The modern day three wood much easier to tame , and is quite easy to hit off a tee or the deck , not sure what your problem is with hitting one . After the three wood I go hybrid to fill in the gaps to my irons ... Much safer than say a 5 wood , 7 wood . Golf is a game of misses and finesse , and trying to play top tier golf is hard and your best gains come from straight shots down the fairway and greens in regulation ... Playing strategic golf with safe easy to hit clubs is the way to go to lower your score and the driver is not one of them ... I vote for 3 Fairway

As bogey golfer in U.S., I do carry a 3 wood. Use it 100% off the tee in 2 situations; short par 4 OR on tighter holes where I fear hitting Driver would go OB. However that's not very often. What do you suggest for clubs between Driver and 4-5 iron? What lofts and how do you manage yardage gaps between 180 and 250 yards?

  • @DavidSmith-lo7wf

Have a 3 Wood. I did want a HL version of the TM rocketballz stage 2, but on used market I couldn't resist when a regular 15 deg came up in good shape for a good price. I rarely use it, and it's mainly a backup tee club/ shorter or tighter par 4 tee club. I pretty much never use it off the fairway, I just don't trust it, and it's not often I need to go 250 to a green on approach. And if/when I do, there's usually too much trouble around the green to risk going for it anyway. Just hit my 4 Iron down and pitch on.

I finished up last season with just a 5W and 7W in the bag, and those only for long par 3s. Hybrids or long irons off the fairway are far better for my swing. And I'm consistent and confident with the driver so, as you said, the 3W was just redundant.

  • @je1279

I got rid of both my 3 and 5 woods years ago and replaced them with a Rogue 4 wood. I can use the 4 wood easily both on the tee and off the deck. This also allowed me to add an extra wedge to my bag to help in the short game.

  • @Alan_Edwards
    @Alan_Edwards 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You make a valid point . I rarely use my 3 wood unless I am just not hitting my driver well or if I have a very long second shot on a par 5. Which to be honest, does not happen too much since I started playing the senior tees. I am able to hit it fairly well off the fairway grass so there is that and I have room in my bag so I let it go along for the ride anyway. But if I needed to have a different club in my bag I would not hesitate to leave the 3 wood home.

Great video! currently I don’t own a fairway wood or see myself every needing one. I have a 19* hybrid that I can push when needed from the fairways and then a 18* low launching driving iron that I use off the tee that’s more accurate for me than any fairway wood i’ve owned previously.
