The Wraith always felt like a force of nature as opposed to the Goa'uld. The snake heads could barely live a few thousand years, as with Lord Yu, and never without a strong host. The wraith would always come back stronger and more cunning after a major defeat, lending to a sense of invincibility. Loved them as antagonists, and Todd's relationship with Sheppard was so fun.
@@bigbadhodad3894 In a sense both the Wraith and Yuuzhan Vong are very similar; they utilize bio-technology, they're capable of adapting to different environments, and are far more scientifically-minded than they appear. I'd agree that the Wraith would be better because the entire anti-technology view the Yuuzhan Vong hold stems (based in Legends) stems from being caught between two opposing droid factions, but the Wraith appear even more intimidating with their ability to create "adherents" who serve them akin to the Goa'uld worshippers
It would have been interesting to see both the Goa'uld and Wraith fighting against each other, or an aftermath of the S5 finale. Some cases made the Goa'uld seem like they could be just as dangerous, but Todd and Ba'al both seemed like comedic "villains" rather than true "bad guys" to me
Lord Yu would have been over 4200 years old.... and that is when he was a lord already how long did it take him to get that rank.... so maybe even over 5000
To me, the most interesting thing about the Wraith is that they grow their ships, seemingly from humans. We saw Dr Keller be infected and start transforming. I assume that means there is a planet of humans in various stages of ship growth. That would've been incredible to see on the show; a a Wraith ship farm.
That's some metal stuff right there, I don't think they'd be able to do something like that on television outside of HBO. Sounds like something out of the God's Demon book.
Unfortunately Dr. Kellers transformation was the result of one of Michael's experiments. And it had to feed on the enourmous amount of energy coming from the Atlantis-ZPM. So unfortunately while this has a lot of potential, it dies require a lot of energy (which the Wraith are probably unable to provide, given that energy production is "the only reason the Wraith were less advanced than the ancients" Rodney Mckay said this.) And we don't know if the ship would even be fully functional. We don't see it finished so maybe it would not grow in the anticipated way.
That episode also implied the ships where able to think. Dr Keller becomes more or less possessed by the ship that’s growing from her body. I would’ve loved to see a hive ship “speak” or communicate somehow.
They mentioned the lack of power constantly, the only thing they didn't lack power in was weapons. Otherwise had no shields, had to take breaks with their hyper drives.
Wraith taking hyperspace break was due to radiaton damage to wraith ships while in hyperspace, wraith ships needed several hours break before safely jumping back into hyperspace. The Atlantis expedition only had naquada generators in general to power Atlantis. The city of Atlantis was supossed to run of 3 ZPM's working togheater. They found ZPM's later on in the show, letting them use the shields etc, but rarely had 3 ZPM's until Todd gave them some extra to fight the super hive in the ending episode. If the expedition had 3 ZPM's they would have had 0 power issues
Imagine if you will, the parts of your power generators are biological and able to be "regrown" and "regenerated". All you would then need to do is stack the devices operations in such a way that when one unit or part is burnt out or broken, others can take over and allow the broken parts to be repaired or regrown. Like the regeneration effects of the hull their ships have, but internalized for parts. Its one nifty thing that biotechnologies are being explored for now, along with the ability of flesh to overcome hardware limits.
Before I even saw the show I saw a photo of the Wraith from "Rising" and thought, "WTF is that? An albino space vampire?!!" When I did finally watch the show that first 2-part opener was some seriously epic television! The stunning sight of Atlantis rising from the ocean took my breath away. And the Wraith were truly the most terrifying villains I'd ever seen! But then I watched that bonus DVD "Wraithal Discrimination" and the actors playing the Wraith were such hams, James Lafazanos is the most hilarious guy ever! I thought his Wraith were actually kinda hot, they looked like rock stars!
Stargate Atlantis is one of my all time favorite shows stoked whenever you cover it! The wraith were so fun but they left a lot more to be desired of knowing more about them. Todd was the most epic character in Atlantis though. Was strange that the show ended with the Wraith undefeated in Pegasus galaxy. “I believe it’s customary in your culture to shake hands…. Hahaha - just a little Wraith humor”
Given what little was covered, it seemed like they could do a lot more if the series wasn't cancelled. Compared to the Asgard and Goa'uld/Tok'ra there wasn't a lot of time devoted to their culture (their biology and status as a threat, maybe) and why they appeared so dangerous. The commander who was dealing with the human was interesting, especially when he described eating fruit as "the sensation is wonderful, but it doesn't fulfill me"
LOVE these Star Gate videos. It's such a fantastic world, up there with some of the best TV science fiction. Farscape, Babylon 5 and even StarTrek Next Generation and Deep Space 9 made up my formative years when it comes to science fiction TV.
the wraith are my second favorite Stargate villain (replicators being the fave) I’m a sucker for the “consuming swarm” theme of a race and I’ve always been a fan of biomechanical/organic space ships its just such a cool concept. thanks for the vid on them I’ve been waiting for this one!
When I saw Aquaman for the first time in the silver screen my first though was, isn’t this guy from Stargate Atlantis many many years ago? Good to see him from small to big screen
@@curlyraps I mean a wraith queen probably wouldn't submit that easily to a go'auld host. Wraith queens are immensely prideful and have been known to mentally dominate others. I don't think a go'auld would have an easy time taking over their mind and it would probably be hell for them. Even if they controlled the body, they would probably get so many hallucinations haha. Now what would be scary is the wraith queen and go'auld teaming up together for their own diabolical ends 😅
Love the episodes where you cover various aspects of Stargate: Atlantis! This is by far my favorite of the Stargate shows. The wraith have got to be probably the worst and most pernicious of the bad-guys in just about any Sci-fi. Agree with other commenters here, Todd the Wraith needs to have more focus, and you could certainly have him as a major character in a returning Stargate series or movie, or whatever. Thanks for this interesting Wraith focused episode! This was excellent!!
The one issue that i have regarding the Wraith is that the writers of the show chose to make their origins a derivative of humanity. I always thought that diminished them. I would preferred the Wraith to be an entirely alien species that evolved in the Pegasus Galaxy. That would give a greater sense of dread when the Ancients spoke about stumbling across a dark world where a menacing foe slept.
Runners are not immune to feeding they are just strong soldiers the wraith enjoyed hunting. Ronan was fed on and given his life back as torture before making him a runner
I really liked the episode. However you did make a mistake. When talking about the runners, you say that they are immune to the feeding process. Unfortunately this can't be true. We see a Wraith feeding on Ronon in the episode where he get's captured by his old (Sateda) friend and then the Wraith turn him into their willing slave. This processs of turning involves feeding on him and then giving him his time back. Over and over. We actually see this happening on screen.
The overwhelming numbers of the Wraith that won the war were clones! They got their hands on some ZPMs and used that power to quickly manufacture clones giving them the numbers they needed to win against the superior technology of the Altera.
ok right off the bat, during their time in Pegasuses they were known as Lantian, second the Wraith were NOT their equals not even close, a single Aurora class battleship could take on a dozen hives... but the Lantians where vastly outnumbered and where whittled down over time, if you read into the lore...or idk watch the show, the war last decades if not full on centuries
The war lasted just over one hundred years. Alterans/Ancients/lantians, they are all the same species. Using the term Ancients is less confusing, that's all. While the wrath weren't on their level technolically, it wasn't one aurora v a dozen hives..a few at most. The thing the wraith had that rivaled the ancients was their mental abilities.

If you read the Homecoming series of novels, it is revealed that the Alterans created the Wraith in their attempts to unlock immortality.
And they did not fix that?
Talk about the most useless race ever. I mean, they had the tech, all they needed was to use it.
Love Todd the Wraith, that guy should have his own show.

runners are not immune to the wraith they are Warriors who the wraith had fun hunting and want to keep the thrill of the hunt going
Robin was a runner and immune to the feeding, how was the one who corrupted his buddies able to feed on him and refresh him to make him a slave?
I guess I misunderstood the episodes that explain that the Ancients purposely created the Wraith to be a weapon.
The Alterans didn't purposely create the Wraith. They did purposely create the Asurans as weapons against the Wraith.
It's definitely the best worst enemy in this franchise
Better than The Ori
Wraith are kind of similar to Vampires.
It is far more likely that the ancients created the wraith as means for them to become almost immortal

the wraith are not a race they are a different species. "race" is alledged to found within a species, generally only human species, weirdly enough.
