My Beagle Dog Cruciate Ligament Recovery : Tips & Tricks

- So your dog walks in on 3 legs , the change he ruptured his cruciate ligament is pretty big. So what happens after a dog's cruciate ligament surgery? Don't worry , he's not in a lot of pain and all will be fine in a couple of weeks as you will see in this video.
I will talk you through the process right after surgery , training , exercises and more tricks on how your dog's recovery will go.
Keep your dog calm , keep him from licking the wound , make sure you take him outside on the leash first weeks , good healthy food with extra vitamins and play some indoor mind games to keep his brain busy.
Some basic questions :
How much does cruciate ligament surgery cost?
Depends on the country , in Belgium and most European countries it's about 1400€ or 1200$. This is only the surgery , we also have swimming sessions , massage and laser therapy session.
Is my dog in pain?
No , the rupture moment was the most painful part. And just after surgery is also a bit painful so they will drool and pant. When they do that a painkiller is advised.
Does my Dog really need surgery?
Dogs who have a cruciate ligament rupture that don't have surgery, rehab or bracing can develop some level of stability on their own in six to 12 months - but these dogs typically are not comfortable going on long walks, running or jumping.
Can a dog cruciate ligament repair itself?
If left untreated, the lameness caused by a partially torn or ruptured CCL will improve or go away completely in many dogs, especially small ones, within three to six weeks

@@mikef8769 How is she doing now? My boy is doing good. I have to keep him leashed or caged. If I leave him unattended for a minute, he jumps on couches or runs upstairs. 🙄
@@Nononcita And she's doing a lot better she has a good days and her bad days. The bad days she just does the three leg hop. But increasingly more on four legs. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago she was diagnosed with lymphoma. But, we're treating her with chemotherapy. She doesn't appear to be in any pain and she's only five. Sometimes I hate how much I love them. Good luck with your boy! You guys will be in my thoughts.

@@CryptoBarbiexo12 German Shepherd mix. 10 YO. He’s doing PT right now for about $1K and regaining muscle mass. No limp. Puts all his weight on the leg again, except during bumpy car rides. 10000% worth it. His quality of life skyrocketed. I’m in coastal SoCal.

Whoever did his surgery did a FINE JOB .. not much swelling and very good movement quickly.
My poor bug was not able to put weight on it for a long time, big big swelling, it was MONTHS before he was back on his feet. Limped for MONTHS. Finally healed.
How long did it take your dog to completely heal? Mine is in week 4 of recovery. She can put weight on it and there is no swelling but she seems to still be very gimpy/limpy on it, especially after we do workouts….

Does yours still limp? Or does it not put full weight on the bad leg . Mine had surgery , she walks great and puts weight but at home when she’s standing she will just let her leg slide

My Jack Russell suffered from this. Instead of surgery I just kept her home, as quiet as possible and it cleared up in about 6 weeks.

I'm sorry, but did I miss what kind of surgery the ccl repair was on top somewhere? Was this Lateral suture or TPLO?
I was wondering the same thing. My dog (also named Louie) is getting the lateral suture surgery in one week.
@@shahroutavakoli3788 Never got a response, but I can tell you my dog had TPLO 4 weeks ago on his right knee and was walking on it day 5 and recovering well. However, I took him down the block to expand his excersize, he's always been an anxious walker, and when he kept pulling tore his other acl his third week after his surgery. So we had to do both. The orthapedic said it usually happens in like 50% of dogs usually after 1 or 2 years not 2 weeks! He is recovering well though and just started walking on both the same time frame, 5 days after his second surgery. Tbh my dog, a shiba inu, has been overweight for years and I knew something like this would happen, but me and my wife just didn't act fast enough. Now were on an everyday diet till he loses 5 to 7 pounds which will help him alot in the future.

As a veterinarian, when your dog does not put full weight on a limb that equals pain 100%. Anyone who sees this, please take your pet to the vet ASAP if they are limping as they are in pain and this notion that beagles don’t feel pain much is completely inaccurate; a drive to please and to survive does not equal pain-free.
My dog doesn’t put his leg on the ground at all after 16 days TPLO surgery, took him to the vet, they are not concerned, but I’m . They said a hydrotherapy will help, but other dogs are doing fine without that. The vet suggested to take te dog for short walks, but it looks more like torture to me, then anything beneficial.

Yes, in nature, animals don't show pain also to not draw the attention of predators, but it doesn't mean that they don't feel any pain. It is on us to understand that and help them.

My dog has just had TPLO surgery. We are now at week 4 and it feels so long! How long was it before Louie could jump and run around again?
My Dane had TPLO 3 weeks ago. He is in PT two times a week. Doing good. We have exercises to practice at home. He is now walking up slight inclines and working on him putting full weight on surgery leg. I was told 10 weeks on leash from his surgeon. This is his 2nd TPLO surgery . His first was 1 1/2 yrs ago. I was told more than likely the other acl would tear and sure enough it did😢
My dog still puts leg up but walks.normal in a few minutes it’s been about 4 weeks how long till this went away
@@scott9352 from what I found some dogs take longer than others. Mine took around 6-8 weeks before he was properly walking. Just take things slow and don’t rush or push them. If you have concerns always check with the vet but lots of rest and not overdoing things is crucial to a good recovery.

My pup just had surgery for this today. They’re keeping her overnight. She’s already got bad arthritis (9 year old GSD), so I’m really worried about the recovery.

My ten year old mini fox terrier had this surgery 8 weeks ago now. Doing absolutely fantastic. We are still keeping her on a leash and under a bit control as she very prone to energy explosions. I was really nervous about the recovery but I’m amazed how well it’s all gone. Hope your dogs doing great as well
I have a female GSD too who just had this 6 weeks ago. She had to be on antibiotics 2nd time now. Man is it ever stressful. Hope your pup is doing ok 🙏🏻
