Do you really need a M.2 screw?? This might not be as sketchy as it looks.

    Some high end motherboards have screw less M.2 options. It should be on every motherboard. The screw option was lazy engineering in attempt to save 28 cents in production costs.

      The screwless holders DO NOT work for NVME drives with thick heatsinks with plates like the Corsair MP700 PRO.
      It is a nightmare getting these to work on a $500 ASUS X670-E motherboard.

    pop a stick on full sized heat sink to make it longer to catch the screw holes on the motherboard an option as well just for a cleaner look?

    @Darkk6969 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    For something like this I would install the screws on the motherboard even it doesn't have the M.2 card installed. If you don't want to do that then find the smallest ziplock bag that came with the motherboard and store the screws in it. Tuck the ziplock bag somewhere in the case so it's there when you need it.

      I had hoped that the me that built my PC 6 years ago had managed to stash her screws away like that, in fact I was sure I had, but then I found myself staring dumbly into my case where my little baggy of screws should be and finding nothing.
      I wish I could talk to myself 6 years ago and tell myself to just put the screws in the mb 😂

      few things to consider, if it is under a heat sink, make sure you removed the protective cover for the thermal pad, if it had a heatsink did you put it in.
      then it depends on what system it is going in as some may not support it.

    • @jonedee1022

      @DLMtechgarage I think it could too. I was concerned about heat from the motherboard possibly melting the glue later on. I checked the melt point of hot glue, 250°F. GPU/CPU max out at about 185°F or so. Should be good to use in a pinch. I ended up jacking a m.2 from an old HDD board instead.

      @@PapaMav Put together a newer PC as a replacement for another decade-old one on the cheap. And I solved my NVMe mounting issue yesterday BTW, based on another YT video where the guy showed that some 2.5" SSDs have assembly screws that fit the NVMe riser perfectly (or some risers fit into eachother and that's another solution if you're just missing the top screw). And I really did have the same luck with a dead Toshiba SSD I was going to throw out: screws were a perfect fit, and I had just the right torx screwdriver in a drawer.
      This "leave it floating" though... nah. I'm seeing talk of these things popping out due to repeated heating and cooling, so no thanks.
