im happy you are pursuing what you want! im in a similar situation, im so attracted to helping others but i have always just despised bio and found it so tedious to study, human or plants. i just can not fathom learning about cells and pathways, its so boring! hearing about exams, i just dread it. i think im really attracted to the social prestige of this profession coming from an asian background unfortunately. im so stuck, what advice would you give?!

I hear you! However, lots of professions give social prestige and it’s completely social/cultural construction that we feel bio has the halo! I’d say talk to people who study in a different field (
say Econ, CS, Math) and check out the cool things they’re doing! Lots of jobs pay SUPER well without you having to study for eight years straight!
If you’re interested in helping others, you’ll find MANY options to be great for you. Bio is DEFINITELY not the only discipline you can help people on. I’d say keep an open mind and explore different fields. I fell in love with CS helplessly after my first coding class, and am so much happier where I am!

@@christinezhou thank you so much!! do you think if one doesnt enjoy bio pretty much at all, they should think of another route other than medicine? i hear some say that no matter what just stick it out to clinical years but im not too sure, others say then its not worth it bcoz of the sheer course content throughout which is the basis of everything

@@AKMarch01 hi! My personal opinion is one should spend one’s youth pursuing what one really loves, but that’s an intricate matter and is definitely not black and white. I’d say since you already have some foundation in this area, maybe look at something tangential to medicine so that 1) your current skill set can still be utilized to your advantage, and 2) you don’t have to necessarily endure all the bore. Examples could be programmers who work for medicine companies, or consultants in the similar fields. All of these companies would LOVE for someone with actual knowledge in medicine to join.

@@AKMarch01 I'm in the same situation as you. I'd say that volunteering and internships in all of these careers would help you see which one you actually like. I personally have always wanted to help people more directly, so clinical psychology would be for me.

1000% agree and I graduated pre med from a top 5 public US uni and was President of a huge pre med club and decided to ditch it. No regrets! Way more scale of $$ and impact in business plus the medical establishment has very little to do with optimal health anyway. Medicine is fine for what it is but doctors are glorified service providers though highly paid ones. But real wealth (and impact) can come from many other things - real wealth anyway does not come from any job linked to time. Plus the debt, lack of time freedom, and the runway to make any decent money was too much of a burden. not worth it for my personal goals! Now making over what most doctors make, grew a biz to 6 figures fresh out of college, now in real world business and never looked back. So if you're thinking this and doubting, just follow your gut and believe in your inner vision!
