  • memories of ray_#38_mrinal sen_‘ Pather Panchali is the first ‘total cinema’ film, you cannot think of Indian cinema without Satyajit Ray'_ in this very long take, Mrinal Sen talks fluidly without stopping about the Calcutta Film Society, his friendship with Ritwik Ghatak, the writing of his first reviews, the shooting of his first films, about his admiration of Ray’s first films, about the cold public reaction to ‘Aparajito’, about the train scene in Pather Panchali, about some scenes he likes and dislikes in Ray’s cinema, about Ray’s fabulous ’10 years’, from Pather Panchali to Charulata, about Ray’s last three films he really didn’t like and by-and-large, about ‘contemporaneity’….If you don’t have time or patience to watch the full shot, make sure you’ll watch from 34’02, where Mrinal Sen starts talking in a very profound and subtle way about his long relation with Ray, and about his respect and criticism of his oeuvre.( recorded in 1999 in Calcutta )

Such inspirational figures. Lack of resource never bogged them down. Creative talent helped them earn repute in life with merit.

Both Ray and Sen were legends.Although Ray is admired much more in the world,we should know that it was Sen who started the parallel cinema movement with his film 'Bhuvan Shome' in 1969

Many of Mrinal Sen's movies were overtly political and if I dare say preachy. They seem to tell you that they are there to convey a message which I didn't like. As far as Ray is concerned he too commented on the politics of the situation, the problems but they were never bitter pills to swallow. You got the message without the message being too obvious. I do agree with Ray when he says that some of the pedantic film makers made films only for festivals. Many of Mrinsl Sen's movies were pedantic and stillborn, in my opinion. Ray was a real humanist and that came out through his movies. As far as his last few films are concerned I think they were far much better than Mrinal Sen's last few movies. They were way superior. As far as sycophants are concerned, everyone has them. I think Mrinal Sen did too. He had his group. I do not think Ray was much affected by the sycophants around him.

Wonderful comments.... Only one thing I. Would like to add... Mr Sen being a refugee from East Pakistan And made films on downtrodden never spoke publicly or in his film the real reason of his gaining Status of a refugee.... The real reason was that in islamic dominated areas, Hindus cannot survive.... He never spoke.... It is a total hypocrisy... RITWICK GHATAK is no better than Mr Sen.... He also made films on the suffering of refugees but remained silent

At 24:16, he begins speaking about a scene from 'Apur Sansar' but mistakenly refers to the film as 'Aparajito'.

That is what I felt too! Another thing is he thought he could criticise Ray which I believe he could but then he couldn't handle Ray criticizing Bhuvan Shom.

hahahha...praising Ray after all those years,eh? hey self styled art film director..i suppose you dont even have the guts like most of your friends now not even to ignore praising Ray leave alone belittling and badmouthing him as was done earlier by your esteemed friends...what can one do..burning with jealousy used to belittle his films and lecture as if they were going to make masterpieces..when all of self styled parallel cinema directors films look like school projects in front of Ray..the world doesnt care for supposed India parallel filmmakers genius even though Bollywood and others in here do..

Clearly, you have no idea about the history of the film society movement. Nor do you have any idea about the dynamics between Ray and Sen. They were contemporaries who knew how to debate intellectually, beyond your capacity. Not every argument is about jealousy. Also, Sen is globally valued.
