Early Intervention: Helping babies with visual impairments

  • This is a powerful video that shows the lives and progress of young children with visual impairments who participate in the Florida Department of Education Division of Blind Services-funded Lighthouse Early Intervention Program. You will hear first-hand accounts from parents and service providers, and see how much the children have advanced as a result of the program.
Early Intervention services are provided to children from birth to Kindergarten. Services are provided to the child and family in the child's home, day care, school, neighborhood or center-based setting. Learning is structured to maximize the visual and developmental progress of each child. Early Intervention services are critical in preventing unnecessary developmental delays due to vision impairment. Children and families served in the Early Intervention program are empowered to participate in and benefit from activities in the home, community, and school setting. Family participation in the development and delivery of the service plan is an essential component of the Early Intervention program.

My son, 23 weeker, has ROP. He had Avastin injections, laser surgery and a vitrectomy for retinal detachment. A week ago, we learned his retinas have detached again. Already severely visually impaired, and expected to lose all vision in early adolescence. I will be reaching out to lighthouse after this video and hearing about them from John Hopkins all children’s hospital. Thank you

I am a mother of a blind baby .. People in Florida are so lucky to have you. I really wish if we have somewhere to help us to deal with our babies like you do in our country 😞.

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Abbas Ismail, and I am writing to you from Zaria, Kaduna State. I work as an admin assistant at the Distance Learning Centre, Ahmadu Bello University.
I am visually impaired and have very low vision, which significantly impacts my ability to read writings on paper, even with reading glasses. Currently, the only way I can manage to read is by taking pictures of documents with my phone and zooming in on them. This workaround is far from ideal and has become increasingly challenging and psychologically taxing.
I am reaching out to you to request any assistance or recommendations you may have to help improve my situation. Any support, whether technological or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated and would make a substantial difference in both my professional and personal life.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
      Sincerely, Abbas Ismail

Depends on the child. Attach the visual stimuli to specific musics enjoyed by the bairn. Obviously one visual stimulation is the face of the parent so as to correlate with the particualr tune. However, then have a different tune per other picture such as a bun to rhyme with the number1 or a shoe to rhyme with the number2 and a tree to rhyme with the number3 whilst saying it and showing it, such that counting 1-2-3 is learned eventually by means of repetition and partial reinforcement reward schedule _(and feeding, since it is to form "healthy addiction" to knowledge and sensory improvement)._ This is information to help people, so their bairns can learn counting and objects visualised. Use gaming graphics to reduce pain (if any).
Optic nerve damage in conjunction with an implant could further develop this where the eyeball is ok but the signals to the brain are impaired. Thereby machine-learning can be deployed. Then somewhat fund it by selling the tunes.
My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.

They actually thought I was dead. My mother had preeclampsia. I was born in 79. They had already told my mother I’ve had died. I was born alive when one pound 8 oz. they told my father not to tell my mother. I was alive because I wouldn’t live after three days, he told my mother then told him I would be blind because I had written off the prematurity back then babies were given 100% oxygen, it basically was a guaranteed blindness .
I was probably five before I saw anything I had very little in terms of intervention nothing except special Parag glasses into this day. I don’t understand why I can remember in high school and having no books because I couldn’t read them eventually the school was able to get me two books, two books 4 was computer class taken out I was blind and couldn’t see the screen so they put me in staple papers, the school system completely failed me. I was getting no blind straining because I was also learning to disabled. It was just a total wash as far as they were concerned. I still was never trying to use jaws. During my high school years I actually found out about program paper for the first time was to do an assignment with my friends price ever finding out that I could’ve gone to the blind school I live 10 minutes away from the school 10 minutes. I could’ve been trained instead. My father was looking up to be able to afford a month and a blind school so I could get basic training to get a guy dog. My own state did not want to help me because of my learning disabilities. It was found out while I was there amazingly I could actually type for some reason I’m able to understand the letters and type keyboards are never understood. The school had severe learning disabilities in charge of me. I remember the teacher sliding the broke keyboard in front of me and telling me what’s right I can’t spell but he made a very simple sentence blown away.
I just feel so sad that I was never given the opportunity to even try and was given no help. If I had then I wonder where I would be.. There’s also balls that have bells in them and beeping sounds one of the kids fathers was talking about playing ball. He can still can, but you can buy from a company called Maxi aids so everything blindness related..

Mainstreaming kids and regular classrooms is not the best thing and I’m a blind adult who was a blind child who got no services and I’m telling you these kids would be so much better off if they were in school so much better off I received no help whatsoever granted this was years ago, but Still the fact that my life would’ve been 100% different and I would’ve graduated with the training I needed would’ve made a huge difference. You have to understand that they’re in there with regular kids. They’re not special they need even if they’re in special ed because they’re in special ed and school Considered how do I put this nicely not enough to do shit in our classroom or books only went to fourth grade even though kids like me could do more in free algebra the other kids couldn’t so what that means is that everybody does fifth grade math, whether your higher or not and you do it for four years straight you don’t ever get new stuff so that means if you have a child that is blind, but has no learning disabilities you’re making them have learning disabilities. People do not seem to understand this concept at all a friend of mine was what was self-contained there was a kid there who was blind well visually impaired, but nothing else was wrong with him really But he was treated like all the other kids in the classroom who watched Disney and eventually did a few math problems of 2+2 is streaming trust me you do not come out better off
