Traditional Easter Celebration in Tur-Abdin, Southeast Turkey
    ADIYAMAN ANTEP URFA MARDIN MIDYAT
For 30-40 years, most Diaspora Arameans have not returned, let alone celebrated traditional feasts in their homeland. Therefore, the Syriac Universal Alliance (SUA) offered 100 Arameans from all over the world a unique experience to relive their childhood and bring up memories with their fellow people in the land that has given birth to them and/or their (grand)parents.
In celebrating Passion Week and Easter from 19-26 April 2011, the SUA offered them the chance to experience a spiritual and cultural pilgrimage in Tur-Abdin and its surroundings in Southeast Turkey. Ancient places that were visited include, for instance, Gaziantep, Adiyaman, Urfa (Edessa/Urhoy), Harran, Mardin, Midyat and a villages in Tur-Abdin. For most Arameans who originate from this region, this unique experience turned out to be no less than the pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem!
The SUA and its Member Federations were honorably received by Government Officials such as the kind Governor of Mardin and the District-Governors of Midyat and Beth Zabday/Azakh (Idil). Additionally, a LIVE Gala was held in Midyat which was broadcast by Suryoyo Sat on Easter Sunday (24 April 2011). It attracted about 600-700 Arameans from the Mardin province, especially from Tur-Abdin. All of this and more comes back in the beautiful and moving documentary created by Suryoyo Sat (suryoyosat.com/tv).
