Pretty much. Except it has "on the spectrum" levels of guns. There is High Calibre, the "sequel" which is absolutely insane with how many guns it has... Then there are mods. Some QoL, most are "increasing your spectrum" levels of guns. Basegame has a few fun weapons. Overhauling it results in insane combat, its not unusual to be against enemies whom have anti-material rifles late game; no armor protecrs enough.
Not quite, because RTWP doesn't allow you to give commands during animations or attack and move simultaneously, or even use the environment to give you a tactical edge. It's how those games would play if they were designed to be fun instead of a frustrating slog where the optimal strategy is ultimately to buff the party, send in a melee character to take all the agro and prevent the enemies from moving too close, then have the rest of the characters spam your most powerful magic from a distance whilst standing still and occasionally healing the guy getting his head kicked in with potions.
I think you're getting lost in the reeds here and trying to compare too much. Real time with pause is just that, realtime but you can pause freely. Being able to move and attack or how cover works are completely different and independent mechanics

Glad to finally see someone make a video on Brigade. There's a few videos, mostly by Russians, on 7.62 High Caliber but not a lot of native English speakers have been appreciating the great suffering that this series has to offer.
Putting on chance to hit seems fair. In real life you could communicate to your team when you have a good shot, how confident you are about it, etc. This just makes that directly into a number.
The reason unit orders "lock up" is because this game simulates unit's stress. Your guys can get stunned if they unexpectedly encounter an enemy, encounter a lot of enemies, and so on. You can see that by the icon above them. The system is not perfect as the unit is supposed to stop the orders, get stunned, and then continue. But sometimes they continue and only then get stunned. You can also get stunned by taking damage. So stunlock is a very real thing. I didnt even know the main "visionary" behind the game was Ufnarovsky (ufnv is his nickname), the guy who made an amazing 4X game called Polaris Sector. His first game, Remember Tomorrow, was uploaded by him to the russian torrents for free. And Polaris sector is a way more polished version of that game.
@@chrip8614 Honestly its amazing how my favorite games from around 2017 times are made by the same guy. Its wild. I Keep my own version of 7.62 on my PC simply because of how long it would take to remake the install.

The way you describe this game is how I feel about Dwarf Fortress. Janky, weird, big barrier to entry, but also so thoroughly detailed and granular that all sorts of unexpected surprises and stories and twists and strategic moments can happen.
Me thinks that the reason Americans don't make "gun porn" games is because they don't see the point, since they have free access to the real deal. Much of the "gun porn" media comes from countries where gun ownership is heavily regulated (Like Japan and Russia)
9:20 the funny twist of fate of corners being so clunky is that this is somewhat realistic, there are actual combat footage of people repeatedly shooting their own cover because they were under too much stress to realize it (and why height over bore is a thing to worry about). As janky as brigade e5 is, turned out real humans can be even more janky.
You unironically have such a way with words. One of my consistently favorite things about your videos is the wordplay and writing, humorous or otherwise.
How timely, I was getting a serious hankering for a new video from you just a couple days ago. I continue to love your quips. The video may have taken an age to cook, but clearly perfection can't be rushed.
The tactical pause system reminds me of the UFO after[math/shock/light] games who has a similar system but not nearly the same degree of depth, kind of a super simplified love child of OG XCom and Brigade E5
I only played the successor of this game, 7,62 High Calibre and his stand alone mod Hard Life. It is such a shame that nobody makes a modern game with the same systems these games have. Despite the jank, these games are truly amazing.
Great games, loved 7.62 High Calibre, the sequel to this one. Also, those drugs you mentioned earlier in the video, ie. Morphine, you can use them to reduce your merc's adrenaline levels at low levels, basically doping them up early until they're a bit more battle-hardened. Awesome vid!
Never expected you to cover this stuff. A pleasant surprise, really. Much love from Russia. Hope to see a lot more slav jank later. Keep up the great work
Holy shit, a Brigade E5 video by Snakerer! Did not expect this. I love-hate the sequel, and it's crazy how little content there is for these games on TH-cam. Great video, thank you. I love Jagged Alliance even more and actually had no idea Shaun Lyng worked on this. Lost it at, "The barman says there's been no shooting around here lately and, yeah, that was gunfighting."
Anyone else have Tehsnakerer as their sleep aid? For me the Hooligans, Boiling Point, Xenus 2, Die Hard videos and this are like the perfect videos to fall asleep to for me. (Edit) And the Yakuza series videos also.
I didn't think Sonic Adventure music would go well with an intricate, unreasonably hard RTS from 2006, but hey, the more you know! Also, hearing White Gold's driving music again was beautiful. Once again, I appreciate you shouldering the burden of playing jank no one has heard of
Finally, it took me 2 months to finish this, and it's amazing to see such obscure game like this. And all those grenades, the "Opponent" calls, and so forth, I can see the appeal of this game. Ugh, this is what I get for putting this in my 'Watch Later' playlist, and 20% of the videos there are 1+hour endeavors to watch.
If I had a nickel for every time Snake played a janky game about being a mercenary in a fake latin american country, I’d have… like 4 nickels now? I feel like that should be a genre now.

I think the "bank robberies are constant" thing is a hint? What he meant was "You should be robbing banks all the time and depositing their funds with me!"
49:52, Granted it's not against human opposition, but Project Zomboid can often have moments like this, it has fully tracked bullets/mags and has the same time penalties for where yous tore magazines etc. Lemme tell you I've had some real panic moments hurriedly stuffing mags as a horde approaches (totally not drawn by earlier gunfire)
Speaking of surprisingly novel Russian tactical games, ever tried Silent Storm? While being turn-based and far less jank, it kind of introduced its own flight-sim mechanics in the form of complex ballistics that allowed you to shoot through walls, have ricochets, as well as destroy walls and floors in a very granular fashion. The engine went on to have a couple games made with it.
I like seeing people explore games like this, because it's always interesting having somebody else to compare viewpoints on regarding the success and failings of what makes it unique.

I remember Polaris Sector. A free version used to be available before it went onto Steam, and I played it for a bit. It definitely has a unique approach to the space 4x genre, and it's still sitting on my wishlist as one of those eternal "maybe" games. True to the dev's approach to tactical games, it has a very interesting take on 4x that I'm quite fond of. It's very ship-based. You outfit your designs with modules that dictate their function. If you want to spy on a planet, you build a spy ship, for instance. And fuel restrictions are heavy, lending a logistic element to the game no space 4x game I've played has. It's entirely possible to build a system defense ship that can't perform FTL travel, but is stacked for combat. Honestly, the steep price point has always kept me from considering purchase, given how it's a janky one man project. But knowing the man behind it has this amount of experience might make me take a second look.
you know Snake its wild to think ive been watching your videos for like 9 years time really has been soring! thanks for making some of my favorite comfy content on this site

I generally scoff at grown men who act like groupies for youtubers, but by jove im breaking my own rule. I am absolutely in awe of how good Snake's writing is. His puns are genius and how he makes several of them in one video all land is amazing. As a writer, amatuer poet, and someone generally obsessed with the history of prose, I genuinely believe snake is one of the most talented and clever writers in the whole english language. It's truly a gift to watch his videos because they often inspire my own writing. This is what i imagine a zoomer or millennial version of churchill would have been like if he was writing for TH-cam. Both have that English with that makes me melt. Snake managed to make me fascinated with this game i absolutely would never care about in a hundred years, and that is a product of entertaining and passionate and informative scripts. Snakes videos are like religious events at this point. Cheers old bean!
I remember playing this almost twenty years ago for the first time. It was the best game to scratch that specific itch Jagged Alliance has left. On a side note, I really enjoyed the last act, because defending a sector meant you could mow down all enemies at once and also finally have a use for the mines and remote charges.
Once again, massive respect to the lad who consistently manages to dig up the most obscure, barely perceived piece of gaming out there, be they diamonds in the rough or rough pieces of shit that have been left on the road for so long, they turned into the soil itself. Thank you for the video. It is always a blast and an inspiration to witness. Take care, and I'll be waiting for what madness you cook up next

The gun mix is really eclectic. Includes guns that never made it to production (pancor jackhammer), novelty civilian market items like the Calico, discontuned russian prototype rifles, and WW2 surplus like the BAR and Thompson. It looks like a couple of the guns even have multiple models, I'm seeing at least two Thompson variants. I guess if they'll let you have the gyrojet they're less concerned with "what would people actually use" and more with "how many guns can we put in the game?" I'd have to go through in more detail but a few of the descriptions are iffy, like the "carbon" SKS which looks like black polymer furniture and not carbon fiber, but this could be down to translation issues. Or the EOTech at 48:04 describing itself as attaching to weaver rails rather than picatinny (not strictly wrong, but the eotechs were designed for picatinny, they just happen to fit on weaver too). The DNA of grid-based granular gun customization seems to run through a bunch of russian games, the inventory screen isn't really that different in escape from tarkov.
14:02 So, I am working on a game like this for fun and I think the best way is to make it like this. Dying is hard, but being disabled is easy. Like, if you are gutshot, you are out, but it takes a long time to die (generally). If you can save your ally, they will fight again, but not for this fight (unless it is a relatively minor wound and you got painkillers). Armor protects more, but doesn't stop all the pain. Shots to the head is very often fatal instantly, but only if they hit the brain or neck. The biggest danger is bleeding out and the speed of that is based on multiple factors (Where they were hit, if they continue to move, how powerful the attack was) while organ damage can take them out in the long-term. Combat medics becomes less about just keeping your troops in the fight, but making sure that they get back alive if they are hit.
The thing that this game and boiling point taught me is that being a mercenary is all about solid financial management.

The voice actor for XIII has great power and had me standing at attention ready to act.
Also, holy hell watching them stab someone to death with their bayonet via shoving the entire gun through them then yelling annihilated is hilarious.
A little detail i noticed:
They kept the empty cartriges expel system exactly as it is in real life for the P90
The P90 is one of the few weapons that expels empty cartriges downard instead of right
But after seeing how in depth and in detail how much they have gone with all the weapons and all by modeling even the underbarrel attachments, i'm not surprised...
One fun thing as well is the gyrojet doesn't expel casings
@@Tehsnakerer Another funny thing is that gyrojet weapons are considered useless today in comparison to any common rifle
A single rocket bullet today costs around 200$ to make
It was really a fad of the Vietnam war that stopped after everyone noticed how expensive and underperforming it was in comparison with any other rifle because they were inaccurate, difficult to load and prone to jam

A three page thesis to say they used real time with pause like every crpg in the early 2000s
Well, CRPGs at the time (or now) didn't have that level of simulations. NWN still used 6 seconds for its rounds, for example
Not quite, because RTWP doesn't allow you to give commands during animations or attack and move simultaneously, or even use the environment to give you a tactical edge.
It's how those games would play if they were designed to be fun instead of a frustrating slog where the optimal strategy is ultimately to buff the party, send in a melee character to take all the agro and prevent the enemies from moving too close, then have the rest of the characters spam your most powerful magic from a distance whilst standing still and occasionally healing the guy getting his head kicked in with potions.
that's like the only reason i'm here yes.

A strategy game that allows you to fake out enemies by throwing a grenade with the pin still attached? That is utter insane genius.
Putting on chance to hit seems fair. In real life you could communicate to your team when you have a good shot, how confident you are about it, etc. This just makes that directly into a number.
I get so excited every time you upload! Please keep giving us more great videos. Your work is appreciated!
He also recently released ICBM (AKA: Defcon but more complex, neat game) and is working on a sequel.

Oh man, new Snake *and* Warlockracy today? It's a good day.
You have excellent taste my good sir
That Tarantino joke at 1:25:55 might just be your best pun yet, and that's a high bar.
The way you describe this game is how I feel about Dwarf Fortress. Janky, weird, big barrier to entry, but also so thoroughly detailed and granular that all sorts of unexpected surprises and stories and twists and strategic moments can happen.
As an American, it is a constant shame that the most gun nut games often come in the form of euro-jank. Truly we are letting our proud history down.
Me thinks that the reason Americans don't make "gun porn" games is because they don't see the point, since they have free access to the real deal.
Much of the "gun porn" media comes from countries where gun ownership is heavily regulated (Like Japan and Russia)
Anton Hand is out here keeping up the American end all on his own
If I remember correctly Call Of Duty is an American franchise. That right there accounts for the gun porno that most Americans need daily!
It's a little entertaining that the game is somehow both realistic in how it plays and completely bonkers at the same time. Might pick up this game.
Gonna look forward to seeing this video tomorrow after a nice 6 hours of sleep.
The usage of assorted Xenus series music through the video was a nice touch.

Oh boy, now that music is a callback!
Saul Meyers must be out there!

Did you try Greedfall?
I was getting ready to use this video for that very purpose when I saw this comment.
Hey, welcome back! Was worried you lost your TH-cam loisence and got arrested
I didn't think Sonic Adventure music would go well with an intricate, unreasonably hard RTS from 2006, but hey, the more you know! Also, hearing White Gold's driving music again was beautiful.
Once again, I appreciate you shouldering the burden of playing jank no one has heard of
Watching you play the start of this with your mates was a delight. Glad you finally got a video out, insane game.
Beautiful. Snakerer wit, in-depth military simulation and obscure, high-investment/high-reward strategy makes for a very well-spent evening.

Wait, how is it 4? Brigand clearly does not qualify for the locagion being a fake country, and then there are only 2 parts of xenus

It's always fun hearing about games I'd never heard about before, as well as your thoughts on game design and balancing.
I love your videos so much man. It’s an absolute pleasure when you upload. I think about your videos all the time.

I've grabbed them to have a look

edit: 1:13:50 it's wild seeing callbacks to reviews i watched almost a decade ago now and not only having huge nostalgia, but it also being so funny because it's like getting hit with the world's most delayed punchline
I love the thought of having a Door Kickers style combat system dunked into a sandbox. The stop-start combat of this game *definitely* seems like the kind of thing that could keep someone hooked for hours.
Also, it's too true that we need way more M&B style games set in modern day times. I want to be the beast that is 'merc who looks like an accountant'

It's truly a gift to watch his videos because they often inspire my own writing.

Hell yeah, been sick all day and here's Tehsnakerer to brighten my day... I mean still in pain but been looking forward to the next video
I thought Jagged Alliance was a junky hardcore game, but Brigade makes it look casual.

@@TehsnakererOH! LOL, I thought it was some super nerdy joke about the species from Star Wars lore. Maybe "Boffins" is some kind of British word I'm not familiar with because I'm a 'Murican. Watching this all the way through was a journey, I'm glad you were able to see the game through to the end! Seeing some Eurojank on your channel always ensures a good time, looking forward to what you do next!
I guess if they'll let you have the gyrojet they're less concerned with "what would people actually use" and more with "how many guns can we put in the game?"
I'd have to go through in more detail but a few of the descriptions are iffy, like the "carbon" SKS which looks like black polymer furniture and not carbon fiber, but this could be down to translation issues.
Russians can rival Americans in how much they love guns
14:02
So, I am working on a game like this for fun and I think the best way is to make it like this.
Man your stuffs always so good, insightful, witty, and of course, obscure. Not everyone’s doin it like you, dog.
