Tip for Kym regarding panning subjects that are emerging from behind an obstacle... Use your ears to follow the sound of the car/bike and then pan with the sound (not always possible in extremely noisy environments, F1 may be such an environment). Prior to shooting, prefocus to the part of the track where the car/bike will be emerging (i.e. roughly where you want to shoot it). Then when panning with the sound, don't use back button autofocus while panning with the sound until the car/bike emerges, but shoot frames from just before it emerges. A similar situation occurs at turn 9 at Phillip Island (shooting from the inside of this left hand corner) as the cars/bikes emerge from behind an embankment and Marshall station and crest the hill before diving down into turn 10. You can pan with the sound of the vehicle approaching, start shooting frames just as they emerge and then engage autofocus as they come into view. Hope that helps! Cheers, Ross

I don't care what everyone else is saying about the new Canon R1. I definitely plan to get one and will enjoy it. I went from the 7Dii to the R6, and don’t regret it for a second. I was worried that spreading the same number of pixels across a full frame would lose me detail, but it’s more than compensated for by the quality of those pixels; partly because the AF is just that much better, but also I can go a lot less cautious with the ISO.
@@IainLambertwent from a 1300d to a R7 after selling my motorbikes, I don’t regret it but I should’ve gone for a full frame rather than a crop. The R7 really isn’t doing well when it comes to af, it’s not very consistent if you know what I’m saying. I’m actually considering going to a A7iv with a 200-600 or using it with my 100-400ii.
@@honeybadger1656 what glass are you pairing it with? After the 7D I’m finding the R6 to be witchcraft, but it’s noticeably less amazing with my mk1 100-400mm f/4-5.6 L than it is with shorter, faster lenses.
I used to shoot motorsports, I started with a 30D and ended up with a pair of 1DX's before I stopped. It's a hard sell to go from an R3 to an R1 considering the R3 is $4100 refurbished right from Canon, and there aren't a huge amount of upgrades on the R1. It's almost like an R3 Mark II.
In reality it comes down to the skill of the photographer; most photographers are committed to a brand based on what glass they carry, that’s the big investment, all the manufacturers are either leading of following in different areas, I’m sticking with Sony 😎
Do you have any thoughts on the new r5 mark two? I know the frame rates are not near the r1 but they are still pretty impressive. You’re living my dream.
As a camera salesman, would you trade in a R7 for a A7iv or get a second hand 5div and have that alongside the R7? This is for action photography like rally and wildlife photography.
When I first started shooting sports I had a Canon A1 and a AE1 to shoot sports. I was dying to get a Canon F1 just so I could shoot I thing 8 frames a second. So many people told me it not going to make me a better photographer. I finally got an F1 my friend was selling and it was a night and day difference. I could finally get the shot that was getting away. When it came time to upgrade I stayed with canon and now I can get 40 frames a second. Image if we had this back in the 90's
I understand that R1 does not deliver what is expected on TH-cam and many review pages. Many professionals have been waiting for an exciting camera for a long time. Many people see R1 as R3 mark 2.
I'm not 100% sure, but i heard that canon made a statement that it can shoot to around 1000 images of full size raws before the buffer kicks in. Gotta fact check though.
@@markysng seems like everyone is testing the max raw image only no one is testing the JPG number. In the past the 1DX3 can shoot jpg nonstop, just my normal work need me to shoot about 1-2 minutes non stop. however no one is testing that haha. interesting view on the R1, most influencer tubers are complaining it isn't a "flagship" 😅 Just weird people are over the top with the pre shot mode, my old fuji x-t3 even has that 😅
Many features that olympus/OM I.e. Pro capture have had for years. Makes me smile how canon nikon sony announces these features like they just invented sliced bread. Nice to see the big names finally catching up with olympus/OM
You literally get to add precapture to a fullframe sensor, with more quality, better ISO performance, etc. I think it is a great achievement to be honest, as OMsystem has been stagnant for years and the OM1 MARK II is even more disappointing than this R1
There is a point any camera will slow the workflow as it becomes too complex with non-essential gadgets Its always an advantage to have that light nimble shooter to take those opportunity shots. Why canon and not the Sony A1 3 ?
I can tell you are a fan of Canon Cameras. Is there something wrong with favouring a Camera brand? However I think there are some out there who are shooting off their opinions just to promote their content but their opinions have very little practical value. They are all ready on to the R3 Mk II or the R1X or whatever imaginary camera they are dreaming up. The R1 will seriously satisfy REAL CAMERA users. My own view is that Canon has always had what Professional photographers want in their Flagship Camera. 1. Reliability, 2. Ease of Use. From the days of the F1 Series the EOS-1 Series, the EOS-1DX Series there is a common theme Hardened for field use not necessarily the most feature rich. Sometimes other Lines such as the A-Series had more advanced features that appealed to Amateurs (Program, Aperture Priority etc.) EOS-3 Eye Focus, EOS-7NE. The EOS-R3 is just Canon following their method of appealing to their user base. It is not surprising that Canon chose a 24MP Sensor for Professional use, if you cannot get an excellent image from that you are not even a good amateur photographer. The 5-series has always been their high Mega-pixel line aimed at a different user base. Anyhow most people are highly negatively opinionated about the R1 and it is not available as yet to even have a production unit in their hands. For me it would be great to have one but I am also happy with what I am able to achieve for my needs with my 18MP camera. Not that I can afford Canon's Flagship, for those that can afford it I am sure they will be satisfied with it.
As with a few other people, I do feel that this is the R3mk2 more than anything. I am not suggesting that this is a bad thing, and I can understand a professional sports photographer upgrading from the R3 to the R1. Does it feel like a flagship camera? Sort of. Nikon and Canon have gone down very different routes, with Nikon having 45mp in their Z9. The Z9 doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the R1, but the sensor makes it more flexible for multiple forms of photography, including, sports, journalism, portraiture, landscapes and product. The R1 feels very focused on sports, journalism and documentary. Also, do I want AI to upscale my photos?
I could never got the eye tracker/focus to work well with my eye on the R3 (sold it and got Z9) so I hope it’s better on the R1. I probably won’t be getting one due to 24mp, wished Canon could at least pull a 36mp. I know 24mp is enough for journalist and sport like F1 but it’s limited for wildlife photography as you need to crop in tight for animals/birds. But at $7K I will have to pass on it since I’m not a pro and the camera won’t pay for itself. But to those who will be getting one, congratulations and I’m sure it will be a good camera (R3 Mk2?).
I’m considering moving to Sonys A7iv from a R7. Just doesn’t feel reliable with the current AF. Missed so many crucial action shots (wildlife) as the camera decided to not focus or change focus. Kinda miss the old dslr af.
@@davepastern 100-400ii, switched from the Sigma 150-600 which made things a lot better but unfortunately I’m still having some breathing issues during AF which apparently is a problem with the R7.
@@honeybadger1656 yes, the R7 has some micro AF hunting issues, not only with 3rd party lenses, but even Canon EF lenses too. Cut the FPS down from the highest rate down one section (for my R3, I go from H+ to H) as it can help with AF acquisition according to my contact at Canon CPS Australia. Also, have you seen Duade Paton's video on settings for the Sigma lens? You need the dock, but it does help. The Sigma is a good lens and a good mate uses it to good effect (with the R7 I might add).
May be for you sports pros, you will get the R1 no matter what. But, for others many think the R5 II is the true flagship over the R1. 26MB may be enough for sports, but not for wildlife for example and certainly not for birds. So, the narrative out there is the R1 is more like a R3 II. Given the AF is pretty much the same perhaps with a very slight edge to the R1, personally I would pick the R5 II instead, but since I already have the R5 I don't think there is enough for me to upgrade to. To be honest, had Canon put the R5 II specs into the R1 unigrip body with dual CFexpress Type B card slots, I think a lot of R5 shooters would be happy to upgrade to that.
Thats the thing though, the 1 series cameras throughout canon's history have always been targeted towards press photographers and sports photographers who need that fast readout and turnaround speed. That has always been the focus of their 'flagship' models since the DSLR days. The 5 series has always been a higher MP camera than their 1 series to keep things fast. When you need to get your photos published mins to an hour after the action happens, and sometimes even from locations with poor data coverage like warzones etc, a 45MB image just slows everything down.
I have an A1 as well and... this R1 is really underwhelming to me. I was hoping to see more from Canon on this as I figure it'd help push Sony to really make the A1 ii something just as special as the original was when it dropped. I agree with Jared Polin that the only real "flagship" feature of this camera is the autofocus. Everything else sounds like an R3 mk2.
feels like the R5 II is a closer match to the A1 than the supposed flagship R1. Alot cheaper as well. Only one cf express card slot though. It feels bad that they always cripple something.
Regarding the Canon viewfinder rubber eyecups [EOS 1D X Mark III and my EOS 7D = £12. EOS R3 = £70. Yes, Canon do seem to have ripping-off down to a fine art: something that they started with Pro/semi-Pro camera batteries]. At Silverstone, before they built the new 'Wing' Media Centre, the Photographer's Centre was at Copse. Between Copse and the Becketts Complex was a roadway where they parked the lorries that transported the F1 TV containers. Over the GP-weekend, all along this road would steadily become carpeted with broken Canon eyecups as more and more of them became dislodged... The trick to not lose them so easily is to get some Blu-Tack: the 'chewing gum-like' substance used to fix posters to walls. Roll out a 3cm piece of it out to about the thickness of a drinking straw. Put it like a 'halo' - about 5mm away - around the viewfinder behind where the eyecup fits and gently sliiiiide the eyecup into place. It will now be much more secure than before!
I had the eyepiece knocked off my R3 exactly like you described, it's hanging somewhere around Barangaroo. If anyone spots it during a night out in Sydney please give me a ring!
I had the pre recorded shots function in my Olympus for years, it is useless for slow pans as you still need to work out the panning speed, you'll end up yes with the car where you want it but will mst likely be blurry.
i can predict how the eye focus would be bad.. you might be looking at something but the thing is off so now its on the road way behind him so its not in focus.. that system is like playing a video game with a wiimote trying to get it where you want it but i could see it being really frustrating... for this f1 i would probably do what i do with bowling.. find the background you want and the part of the track then focus on the road where you want the car to be then wait for it to get there and fire off the shots and bobs your uncle a job well done eh? now for pints..
Not a real test but as far i can see on the specs it seems to be a expensive R3 mark2. The eye AF in the R3 is not fine to use, hopefully in the R1 it’s better.
It’s weird to see Canon be the one now that’s rolling out a body that’s a “catch-up” model where most of the “buzz” is for features other camera makers have offered for a couple of years now.
I’m not a professional so I suspect my comments here will be dismissed out of hand but here goes regardless. Is this the flagship camera we’ve all been waiting for? I’d say it’s more akin to an R3 MK II. We’ve waited four years for a 24 MP camera? It wasn’t that long ago and people were losing their mind about how good the R3 AF performed. Suddenly we have a new body that humiliates the R3? Call me skeptical. I’ve no doubt it’s a terrific piece of tech but it seems a little underwhelming to me for a flagship camera in 2024. Improvements these days are incremental. Will we see massive jumps ahead like we did from the 5D to the 5D MKII? I’m not sure.
The R1 is not the R3ii. In fact, Canon USA has already stated the R3 line will continue. In all likelihood, it will be the R3ii that gets a Global Shutter First, way before we see one in a R1. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only) still costs NEW, more then the latest and Greatest mirrorless Flagship R1 some several years later. So all these Folks blanking on a Camera in a price Range they would never buy in the first place, Regardless of Brand, basically have nothing else to do but complain.
@KymIllman I just purchased the R5 Mark 2 it will be shipping in August and I'll have some time to play with it. But I will definitely be purchase the R1 that comes out in November. @KymIllman what brand is that Japanese lens I see you using? I would love to get my hands on one
@@KymIllman Thank you. The F1 is hard to find so many F/1.3 and F/1.5 available for like $700. I was able to find a brand new F/1 in Japan for $1775 but almost $2000 with tax and shipping. But I think it is worth it seeing the image background you are getting when you shoot. Thanks you so much!!!

@@honeybadger1656 what glass are you pairing it with? After the 7D I’m finding the R6 to be witchcraft, but it’s noticeably less amazing with my mk1 100-400mm f/4-5.6 L than it is with shorter, faster lenses.
Good for you! The 7dii is an awesome camera.
Love this guy, Canon is the one and only you can shove Sony!
How do you create an 8 image pano if the car is moving?? Thanks !
Maybe this is not the most important question, but does that new locking hot shoe cover fit your old r3? Did you happen to try.
I should’ve tried it. I imagine it would.
Thanks for sharing.
Love this guy a real cool photographer... all those other influencers are just influencers!
Thanks for that.
In reality it comes down to the skill of the photographer; most photographers are committed to a brand based on what glass they carry, that’s the big investment, all the manufacturers are either leading of following in different areas, I’m sticking with Sony 😎
Glass is obviously the big one, but also Sony feels really uncomfortable as a Canon user, and my fingers know where all the buttons are on this.
@@IainLambert - that’s true too; learning and becoming comfortable with the menus is important too.
Do you have any thoughts on the new r5 mark two? I know the frame rates are not near the r1 but they are still pretty impressive. You’re living my dream.
As a photographer, a huge F1 fan and a camera sales man, I approve of this message. Even as a Fuji-shooter-
As a camera salesman, would you trade in a R7 for a A7iv or get a second hand 5div and have that alongside the R7? This is for action photography like rally and wildlife photography.
When I first started shooting sports I had a Canon A1 and a AE1 to shoot sports. I was dying to get a Canon F1 just so I could shoot I thing 8 frames a second. So many people told me it not going to make me a better photographer. I finally got an F1 my friend was selling and it was a night and day difference. I could finally get the shot that was getting away. When it came time to upgrade I stayed with canon and now I can get 40 frames a second. Image if we had this back in the 90's
Like if you want Canon to lend an R1 to Kym for the next race so we can all enjoy the next youtube video and have more info on the camera! :)
I understand that R1 does not deliver what is expected on TH-cam and many review pages. Many professionals have been waiting for an exciting camera for a long time. Many people see R1 as R3 mark 2.
@3:58 this 100 what i was thinking about that eye af thing....I do that too.
Hi just wonder will there be continuous shooting of jpg non-stop on the R1 at 40fps? The R3 stall at around 300 frames
If the R5c can record 8K60 raw now on CFE with out any issue, then the memory Card is not the bottle neck.
interesting view on the R1, most influencer tubers are complaining it isn't a "flagship" 😅 Just weird people are over the top with the pre shot mode, my old fuji x-t3 even has that 😅
Slightly surprised you didn't have a pre-production model, and i hope you get your hands on the R5MK2 and compare the 2 cameras.
I'm eosm 10 user. canon is good
Many features that olympus/OM I.e.
There is a point any camera will slow the workflow as it becomes too complex with non-essential gadgets
Its always an advantage to have that light nimble shooter to take those opportunity shots.
Why canon and not the Sony A1 3 ?
I use an old Pentax. One frame every couple of minutes.
If the Canon marketing folks are not falling over each other to get a free R1 into Kym’s hands asap, they’re not doing their jobs very well!!!
hahahaha and what else
Canon only cares about sports photographers...wildlife photographers are continuously screwed by Canon.
I’m considering moving to Sonys A7iv from a R7. Just doesn’t feel reliable with the current AF. Missed so many crucial action shots (wildlife) as the camera decided to not focus or change focus. Kinda miss the old dslr af.
@@honeybadger1656 what lens are you using? Settings?
Bought the r3
Great imput 👏👏👏
Phone pairing!!! Finally!
Surely for panning it wont help as you wont be moving yet? But nonetheless, great video....cant wait to see the R5mkII in action for wildlife!
what lens set do you use? for trackside vs walk through?
Thanks for hands-on preview.
Truly surprised that sport photographers are not all gone to Sony A9III 🤔
I am not surprised
OM System (Olympus) have had a lot of the features for some time as well.
as harsh as it might sound, but there is no money making in wildlife or bird photography.
@@TasteofTaboo Why can't the camera do both? Sony and Nikon can. Wait till the A1 II comes out. 26MB just doesn't fly.
@@markysng But, where is the new tech though? No global shutter? No quad pixel AF? I just heard the European price point is EUR 7,800! Ouch!
4:20 Canon had a similar feature in their compact cameras over ten years ago.
What a beautiful piece of technology! This comes from a Fujifilm crop sensor street photographer
For me, I'd rather upgrade my R5 than the R3. Having two stacked sensors that can recorcd past 30 mins in DCI will be nice.
My R3 has a feature called panning assist. Does the R1 have it?
Your Opinion, as many people were debating about it: are 24MP enough for you, or would you like more?
Kym how many photos do you get on one battery? That's why I like a double battery grip?
4,500
@@KymIllman How do you get so many? What size in media card?
Nice that canon is catching up. My sony a1 could do all of this from 3 years.
@@CybrSlydr and a poor R3 upgrade at that imho...
feels like the R5 II is a closer match to the A1 than the supposed flagship R1. Alot cheaper as well. Only one cf express card slot though. It feels bad that they always cripple something.
@@CybrSlydr I was confused as well but I kinda understand why Canon did it.
@@CybrSlydr Furthermore, the automatic focus of this R1 is implemented in the R5 mark II with 45 megapixels, 30fps, precapture, same processors, etc.
Have you tried the Sony A9ii or So y A1?
You don’t need to be paying £70 for an eyecup. They’re US$19 out of B&H Photo.
I had the eyepiece knocked off my R3 exactly like you described, it's hanging somewhere around Barangaroo. If anyone spots it during a night out in Sydney please give me a ring!
Do you use back button focus mate?
Yes
Do you use back button focus Kym?
Yes
I had the pre recorded shots function in my Olympus for years, it is useless for slow pans as you still need to work out the panning speed, you'll end up yes with the car where you want it but will mst likely be blurry.
I love your work no matter what camera you are using. And when it comes to subscribing, if you are not, you should just hit that button.
As normal great inside into the world of F1 photography, can I ask about your auto focus setting you trackside R3 user myself
I suspect pre production R1s will be floating around at the Olympics this year.
Will you be buying 2 bodies since you normally carry 2 on your BlackRapid harness?
Yes
My inner camera nerd was waiting for this video
Im more of a sonny guy, so the a1 or a9 are more for me
i can predict how the eye focus would be bad.. you might be looking at something but the thing is off so now its on the road way behind him so its not in focus.. that system is like playing a video game with a wiimote trying to get it where you want it but i could see it being really frustrating... for this f1 i would probably do what i do with bowling.. find the background you want and the part of the track then focus on the road where you want the car to be then wait for it to get there and fire off the shots and bobs your uncle a job well done eh? now for pints..
thats my impression as well.. i use a 6d.. in my mind it isnt worth getting an r5.. but an r5ii...
So a R3 mk II?
5:10 - Ethernet socket.
If it works, why would you not use the iso noise reduction?
because software based iso noise reduction is simply brilliant and I am very dismissive of Canon beating something like DXO pure RAW.
I like the technical camera content... Even though I shoot Nikon 😂
A9iii in the chatroom and says what else is 🆕
Personally its R5 Mk2 that tempts me to upgrade but that price increase a bit too much to justify.
Can you explain why most sports photographers use Canon over Nikon? Is Nikon inferior to Canon?
No idea
