    Tbh that's a healthier mindset than what I've seen from most ex vegans. Usually, they somehow turn to the other extreme and go completely carnivore. As a former vegetarian, I still think that moderation is key and including more vegetarian and vegan meals in your diet is a great thing

    • @MsVilecat
      @MsVilecat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      The Western model of agriculture is a big part of it.
      Even if we somehow eliminated meat from practically everyone's diet (certain people cannot stop eating meat for medical reasons due to a rare condition), the model causes many importamt crops such as many nuts, cacao and soy to be as much of a burden on the environment when you look not only at the carbon footprint but also the resources used to grow, harvest, transport and transform the crops.
      It doesn't help that most commercial farmers nowadays go by the estimated charts of what the seed sellers give them instead of doing soil analysis and taking local conditions into consideration. Other solutions to save on resources in the long term for certain produce like underground irrigation systems for avocado trees as an example aren't adopted because they're considered too big an investment upfront and the benefits aren't seen as valuable on the short term.
      There are ways to eat meat and consume other animal products ethically, Indigenous nations have done it for millenias before us. Switching to veganism is not the ultimate solution, simply a bandaid on an open wound.

      Meat production is one of the most efficient industries in the world. Even subpar meat products are an order of magnitude or two denser in energy and nutrients than the best vegan and vegetarian products.
      The only real issue for the environment is Chinese and Indian fossil fuel energy generation. The US is fairly clean.

    • @n.c.pictures
      @n.c.pictures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@ArchOfficial the efficiency is precisely the problem 😑
      The amount of ESPECIALLY subpar meat mass produced under HORRENDOUS conditions for the animals brings huge environmental problems with it due to e.g. the amount methane released by the animals and deforestations to make space for all the crap substitute feed fed to the animals. Then there's the water needed to treat the meat too.
      Especially the US produces way too much meat and much more than humans need. If meat productions was restricted to local butchers and farmers, 1. the meat quality would be consistently good and 2. the environmental damage would be reduced by a lot too.

    I feel like "mostly vegetarian with meat occasionally" would be an ideal way for most people to live. Food animals would be able to be treated better since the focus would be on producing as much as possible, the environmental impact would be significantly reduced, and more people would be on board with it because it's not completely cutting out meat.

    • @tiffles699
      @tiffles699 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

      Yes, plus we need to understand the food cycle. Yea legumes are nice and put some Nitrogen into the soil, but we rely on blood, bone, feather and manure OR petroleum byproducts for fertilizer. The environmental impact of either reducing the production of meat to very low levels is going to be bad(considering that oil would then be almost exclusively the only source of plant fertilizer and crappy as it is almost exclusively just macros as opposed to animal products that does macros and micro nutrient), but moving it to lab grown production would be absolutely devastating.

    • @psychoedge
      @psychoedge 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      @@tiffles699 most fertilizer is either from manure or synthesized. Problem in many highly industrialized farm countries is that they have too much livestock so they overproduce manure and also that they tend to overfertilize. We have massive problems with nitrates seeping into ground water. Statistically humanity gets about 20% of its caloric intake from animal products, 80% is from crops. Yet 80% of all crops farmed on earth are used to feed livestock. You'd reduce the environmental impact of agriculture by like 30-40% just from eating half as much meat and dairy and by almost 80% (!) from switching to veganism globally.
      I don't say we will ever stop eating any animal products, especially eggs are an insanely versatile food used in almost any culture. But we should absolutely return to how it was in the 19th century where meat consumption was limited to your family's sunday roast.

After marriage he slowly started converting to vegetarian and he tells he doesn’t miss non vegetarian all that much. According to him meat does taste good, but vegetarian food tastes amazing as well. So he never felt as though he was missing out on something. He said during his younger days when he converted newly he did get the urge to try some but he felt it was more of a mental feedback thing that “Yeah I’m eating meat” than the taste of meat itself. He now doesn’t eat any meat.

You can always choose to do a vegetarian day/week/month or simply reduce the amount of meat you eat. It's better for your body to only have a serving size of meat that's the size of your palm- for a week! (Or so my sociology of food course told me in college) so if reducing your intake is good enough for you then go for it. It's about what works best for you. Nah, meat usually doesn't taste mid because tastebuds aren't used to meat. Usually, it's because you obliterate food with spices, while meat (and by that I mean in steak-form) is best enjoyed with as little spice as possible, ideally only salt, maybe pepper and maybe garlic. When your tastebuds are used to everything being spiced out the ass, something as plain as meat will naturally taste mid.
      When you're used to eating little spice, you start to actually appreciate the taste of meat and you start to distinguish the quality of the meat. Wagyu tastes amazing if you've only eaten normal beef. The fat is absolutely heavenly, it's tender, it's moist, and if you get the sear right...just foodgasm.

    I’ve been what I’ve dubbed a “part time” vegetarian for about three years. Mostly because I had stomach issues and red meat was really bad for it. I go through waves where I eat lean meats and dairy products then back to meatless again. I feel healthiest that way 🎉

      same, I don't understand why people tend to eat the meat that is left over by carnivores, I tend to buy organ meat, is better, and is cheaper. I used to be vegan, I changed because there was a health component that was severely lacking, and I had to inform myself a lot, I had a skin tag that was the symptom, the cause was what I used to eat, for years I had that, until I saw some info by chance, so, I tried it and it worked, 2 weeks and the tag that I had for years on my skin just vanished. Some people really can't be completely vegan, nutrition is slightly different and that is why some can and some can't, and probably genetics plays a huge role.

      Wagyu is also overhyped. Sure the stock has been bred for quality of meat, not quantity and speedy growth, but it's not some magic cow from heaven. Unless you're breaking the bank for verifiable meat from an animal that was absolutely pampered and specially slaughtered (modern slaughterhouses aren't particularly great at minimising stress in animals, and stress can and does outright ruin the meat), its meat isn't going to be magically out-of-this-world delicious. Industrially produced beef is industrially produced beef.

    Meat has its place. The only issue is ethics. I'd like to not feel guilty when I eat meat, seeing as it is required for a lot of what I live to cook. If I could at least eat a steak without thinking about how sad the cows were, or how many were thrown away due to not being used, that would be great. If that requires me to go to the store and forego some beef because they have low stock, that's fine with me. I'd rather go without a steak when I'm craving one, than eat a steak knowing hundred have been thrown away that same day due to expiration.

    When I learnt this I had to ask myself, so why do I eat meat? My answer was taste, convenience and habit.
    I then asked myself, are those good enough reasons to kill animals?
    For me they weren’t so I had to go vegan.

      Vegetarian and Vegan are different. You can still eat animal products without killing them.
      Vegans dont allow for any animal products including any dairy products. Milk, Cheese, Yogurt, Butter, Honey, etc. If you eat those things, but not meat, then you're a vegetarian, not vegan.

    • @Onager28
      @Onager28 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@eragon78 male chickens in the egg laying industry are killed at birth. Either by gas or maceration as they serve no purpose and they aren’t the same breed as those reared for meat.
      Male dairy cows are similarly useless to the industry and so are usually killed at birth or sold for veal (also killed).
      So for me vegetarianism is no solution.
      That’s ignoring the horrific living conditions these animals are subjected to everyday.
