Ferrets Meet a Kitten for the 1st Time

  • Care should always be taken when introducing new pets to your old pets. While it's common for a cat to get along with ferrets, it's not always the case. For example, our 17 year old cat, Midnight, does not really like the ferrets. They have learned to coexist peacefully and just ignore each other, but they will never play together. We are hoping that with starting with Loki at a young age (8 weeks old), that he will enjoy being around the ferrets.
    If you have any doubt in reading animal behavior, it's always best to play it safe, and not allow them to interact. In this video, you will see one of our ferrets, Winky, playing with Loki the kitten; but it can easily be interpreted as fighting. Similarly, it could be easy to mistake a fight as playing, which could be a disaster. We have owned 5 different ferrets over the last 5 years, and we have learned that Winky always plays the most "aggressively". There are times that even his brothers want to disengage playing with him.
    We just want to show our journey of introducing our kitten, Loki, to our Ferrets. This is not intended to be a tutorial of introducing a cat to ferrets.

      Yeah, they've been enjoying playing with one another. Our oldest ferret, Kreacher, doesn't really play at all anymore; and Hagrid the ferret only puts up with Winky's rough-housing for so long before he stops playing with him. Loki is definitely good for Winky.

      They are not wrong. There is always a risk when mixing species of animals. There are lots of ferrets and cats that get along, and there are a lot who do not. Both the ferret and the cat can cause harm. It really comes down to the individual animals, and even then so, I would make sure to supervise and really understand the behavior.

      I have a ferret and 3 adult cats and 1 senior cat and they get alot for the most part for not fighting I mean my ferret is very curious and probably wants to play with the cats but normally the cats want nothing to do with her they usually run away for get backed into a corner and ngl that funny to see, my senior cat probably got along best with my ferret but Anastasia just couldn't stay away from her face and neck area and one day the almost had a fight and since then I do my best to not let Anastasia get in their faces or get to jumpy and around them and jump on them, I would assume mostly they don't want to hurt her cause they have never seen something like a ferret I'm their lives and the ferret the same and I never had my cats as kitten only full grown cats so they didn't really get a slow introduction

    We have two hobs, brothers, the runt
    and his protector, Ron and Reg or the boys.
    Recently a stray cat adopted us, Blue, now she is pregnant.
    We live in a converted box truck, the boys have quarter of it...
    They are outside daily on harness and anchor and always stop by to say hello to the cat . We are half expecting the boys to stash the kittens and we have no great concern of them trying to harm them. The boys bring shame to the reputation of ferrets by being unbelievable soft and cuddly.
    You have pretty much shown that you do pretty much what we do whilst getting the creatures used to one another.

    In general I'd just advise against having a ferret and cat altogether. While you can have a very chilled cat and a very chilled ferret, that isn't always the case with everybody's pets. The biggest reason to avoid having them together is that they just simply don't understand each other's body language. One may interrupt the other's intention for play as a fight and things can get out of hand especially for the ferret being the smaller of the two. If you had cats and dogs before then you'd know that cats are more heavily tuned towards their natural hunting instincts.
    All it takes is one moment when you're not paying attention and something goes horribly wrong. It could work out but it also could not. Even more so if you aren't good at reading your pets body language. I'd just rather not take the risk in the likelihood that it doesn't work out. My temporary amusement is not worth potentially a life of an innocent ferret. I have 2 chilled cats and am very confident in reading them and even then I wouldn't get a ferret. Dogs? No problem but not a ferret even though I want one so badly.

      I’ve actually tried introducing my families dog to my ferret and it didn’t go too well. Our dog was really paranoid because it’s never seen an animal like a ferret before and would try to bite my ferret (her name is Lucky) out of curiousness sometimes and I instantly knew they couldn’t be left together even supervised

    • @PawsToJourney
      @PawsToJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a lot that goes into introducing dogs and ferrets. Of course it will depend on the ferrets and dog on whether or not they will get along. What's important is really understanding both your ferret's behavior, as well as your dogs. Dogs will normally give signs that they are upset before they bite, but not everyone knows how to see those signs. They can give the obvious signs of growling/baring teeth, but there are tons of little subtle things (like lifting a paw), that can also indicate that they are uncomfortable and may bite. The TH-cam channel, PazuandFriends, actually just posted a video on this topic! You should check them out!

    • @PawsToJourney
      @PawsToJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good comment! It's good to know that not all dogs and ferrets will get along, and that's okay! Us humans don't always get along with everyone, so it's understandable that our pets (especially different species) won't either. :)

    My albino ferret just looked my neighbors outdoor cat up and down in my kitchen, but did nothing, the cat, who was a tom cat, got scared and ran off and was afraid to come back inside. Its always a risk mixing different animals, we had gerbils and white mice and the pet shop staff said to be careful with putting them together. They were fine for a few months, the mice kind of annoyed the gerbils but no fighting or anything. Then one morning the white mice were missing, we only found bits and pieces of the tails.

    Idk if it's just the difference in ferrets but both of my girls I know I could just drop in front of a kitten and they'd all have a blast I'd be more worried if the kitten would be scared but MAYBE if the kitten is too hyper theyd tell him to shove it and hide the toys but other than that would just be crazy with the kitten. They love their kitties so much lol.

      I always scoop their litter box daily, and clean the cage weekly. I throw all their bedding into the wash, and have backup sets of bedding I can put back on. I do have to say, in that we've been super lucky in the 5 ferrets we've had, and they've all been great at being litter box trained. Having accidents outside the cage would definitely make things more complicated.

    • @PawsToJourney
      @PawsToJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hello! Congrats on your rescue kitten! How old is your kitten?
      It can be very normal for ferrets to attack a kitten, so often times it’s recommended to NOT introduce your kitten to your ferret until they’re 4 months old. Even then, the ferret could still attack, but the kitten should be big enough to defend itself.
      Not all ferrets and cats get along, so it’s important to monitor their interactions closely. If the ferret and cat are not getting along, it’s safer for them to be apart.
      I hope this helps!
