Great stuff! I note that Tom has a rather boring Matchless 350 and PVC gear, whilst his friend has a considerably cooler Triumph and is dressed like a Rocker.
This is an ace film, I could watch it again and again. And that groovy music at the end? It's called Sheer Murder by Keith Papworth from a 1964 De Wolfe library LP. I also noticed outside the newsagents the headline "The Queen in Ethiopia" which she visited in February 1965, so going by that and the rather cold look of the riders, that would be when this was filmed!
That's because British road rules were interpreted quite literally - maybe they still are? Anyway, they state that a vehicle should give way to pedestrian ON a crossing. When I learned to drive in the mid 70's I was told that I would FAIL my driving test if I stopped at a crossing UNLESS the pedestrian actually had on foot on the crossing!
This was before I was born, and for some reason I am fascinated by what life was like back then, what streets, houses, shops etc looked like and how people behaved and talked. I googled some of these street names to see what they look like now 🙂 Scary to think Tom and his friend will be nearly 80 now, if they are still alive...
That Matchless was a lovely bike,I was driving the Tartan Arrow van in this it was on permanent hire to Pathe as a props van.Cant believe its over fifty years ago and those TK Bedfords were modern then
WOW! You drove the van! I spent ages trying to find out more about this, worked out it was around Harlow and Wembley, with the final shot on the A4 Chiswick flyover and the clock tower is still there! I still have no idea who Tom and his friend actually were.
6:00 The 'Queen In Ethiopia' headline on the left clearly pinpoints the filming of this PIF to between the 1st and 8th of February 1965, as that was when the Queen made her state visit to Ethiopia (which would shortly be followed by visits to Sudan and West Germany).
I usually spot most things, but 200 points and my hat off to you sir! A stunning bit of detection. I'll make a note of that. There is a continuity error there too. nice weather on the way into the shop, then the next shot is all foggy!
I'm not really that observant: I once watched another upload of this film from about seven, eight years ago, and someone else had pointed out that headline! I AM a little bit observant at times, of course: I once managed to work out the location of a scene in an episode of 'Sooty', purely based on the level crossing sign in the background!
Throttle on modern twist grips shuts down on letting go,bikes have a kill engine switch and traffic indicators. I took my test in 1966 and had to use hand signals despite bike having blinkers.Throttle stayed open to maintain road speed when using hand signals.
Wow - the main character in 'Psychomania' is called Tom as well - I wonder if this film is why? There's a part of the film which also features him as a little boy on a bicycle.
there was a feature on bikes back then where you could lock the throttle in any position. It wasn't very safe and was later discontinued. A sort of early cruise control if you like.
@@Matthew-ob7vb Well spotted! It was a UK fizzy drink range, lemonade, limeade, orangeade, cherryade, cream soda and later they knocked out 'Dandelion & burdock'. All great for a kid, but chemical stuff looking back on it.

yes, she wasn't in the script...
@@simontaylor2973 still shouldn’t he give way lol?
Haha, yeah I noticed that too 😂
Bad Tom…. Plenty of time to stop, she was clearly waiting to cross. He’d have failed his test for that now.
The newsagent at 212 Alexandra Avenue (5:42) is still there. It's called New London News now.
I just looked it up. It's barely changed.

Tom should have stopped at the Zebra crossing at 5.33 as there is a pedestrian waiting to cross - naughty Tom!!

Tom's mate got hit by Reginald Molehusband driving a truck :)

Yeah he did!
Wish the roads were as empty as that nowadays! 😕
Yes, but despite the empty roads, deaths due to road traffic accidents were much higher in 1965.
The times when it was actually legal to do something, for example to ride a motorbike and park it anywhere.
but back then people had an ounce of common sense and did things responsibly
