He came from off the West African coast, packing winds stronger than most,
headed Northwest to the islands and main, scaring all in the path of his rage.
He hit the islands with relentless destruction, the lil houses couldn't stand the suction
thousands were left totally homeless, death and damage remained, only hopelessness.
After the islands he headed toward mainland, caught the Gulf stream and gained more momentum
barometer dropped lower and lower as the storm surge grew with creschending power.
The Carolina coastlands began to worry as HUGO approached with this raging fury,
most people evacuated far to the west as the rest remained, braced for his test.
From ten to two the Charleston coastline was hit, blackness reigned, power and lights went unlit,
McClellanville went under with the roar of the thunder, devastation to trees as they all fell to their
The storm hit at 20 then raced up to 40, picking up speed as it headed northward,
whipped through the state and aimed for Charlotte, knocking out power, the trees, then the stars lit.
HUGO descended, destroyed and destructed, now it's time for re-seed and construction,
the people went down but bounced right back, survived the worst storm in a century no doubt.
There will be others to hit that's for sure, but none like HUGO as these folklores cure,
In ten or twenty years the coastline sits ready, for nature's ocean roll that's forever steady.
From now until then it's no time to mourn, the hurricane has come and we all have grown.
Don't build on the beaches, the marshes such sweetness, you'll regret all your losses as the storm surge tosses,
All your possessions won't mean a thing with a wall of storm water fifteen feet or taller
crashing on your rooves, swelling up your homes, Poseidon don't you hope, you'll still have your bones. copyright PAF.
