3 dealerships in 2 years and every single flat rate tech has been too busy or too good to help me learn anything. Management has only reinforced that mentality and I’m left to learn myself with only alldata as my teacher. A mentorship has never been an option and bringing it up to anyone usually gets me a funny face in response. For an industry that cries nobody wants to work I would reply that nobody wants to teach.

What area of the country are you in?
I highly suggest some local training. They're typically very affordable & you get to meet like minded ppl... it's such a GREAT way to learn.

Don't work at dealerships....... It's a machine.... Find a small shop with no more than three lifts..... Managers are hungry for reliable people, who want to do a good job. Small shos makee their money on repeat customers who live nearby......they build relationships. You could work on the same person's car for decades.
So for them, they want productivity, but they can often take a minute to explain something to you that you haven't learned before.
But you gotta show up, on time, sober, every time.... So they trust you.

Time is money and if that flat rate tech is busy helping the new guy he is not flagging hours. I’ll help a new guy a bit if I like him but I’m not gonna be the only tech helping him, its a team effort. If they don’t like ya, you aren’t getting much help.

It's very hard to find a shop with a healthy work environment. I think most of us are just making the best of a bad situation and telling ourselves that it's better than the last shop we worked at, or we're telling ourselves that it's not bad enough to risk winding up somewhere worse if we decide to leave.

This hit home with me. Just transferred shops because of a toxic manager that brought in “his guy” went from averaging 60hrs a week to less than 35 the next 2 months. When confronting the manager about it I was told I make more per hour than he does (flat rate). See you later 👋🏽

It's always a 12 hour ticket on a car that, "is leaving at 3am to go on a trip." ...always... oh and then the car sits for 2 weeks before it gets picked up.

Nobody wants to be singled out or get a label. Everyone is afraid to loose their job. It starts with the way you communicate. Most people are not good at it. Employers rule by fear and intimidation in many cases. Brush up on communication skills. It helps. Management doesn’t want to take responsibility for their issues.

Shops cannot afford to lose techs. If techs were plentiful, they wouldnt be ruling you by fear. They would just get rid of you with the next cycle of techs.

Such a great topic! It's affecting many industries & companies. There's a HUGE disconnect between lower & upper levels of these companies. "Brass" or white collar says they want a, b, c... and "feel" like this is the best way period... and the lower positions, blue collar or those who directly deal with the customer KNOW that x, y, z is a much better & efficient way of doing things. Management does not want to acknowledge 1st hand experience and instead punish those who want to perform to the best of their ability. It makes no sense. Then companies/biz complain they can't find good ppl etc.
    Awesome video Mike! 😊

I’ve been watching since I was in tech school, I worked 8 years as a tech at Toyota and left two years ago due to many of these issues…. Started my own shop and have made more money than ever and am happier than ever. God bless!

We mechanics love our freedom to be creative. Build race cars, drink beer and be free of the office life. But we end up under extreme pressure from the scam shops and family . Many have child support or alimony to pay and fall victim to being the criminal mechanic .

I work in rental fleet and the big problem is corporate has decided to boost shareholder profit by hiring "B" and "C" level techs for most repairs and then just hoping that no cars need any real repairs or diagnostics that require an experienced tech. The cars are also high mileage compared to years ago. There are a few of us experienced guys left and we are slammed with very difficult repairs because the cars aren't nearly as easy to fix or reliable as corporate managers were hoping (or as easy as 20 years ago when computers were basic). So we vend a lot to the dealer and everyday is another headache repair that the B and C tech guys started but can't finish and it gets pushed onto me. Thankfully I'm paid hourly and very close to getting out of the business. It wasn't always this way. We used to employ serveral full techs and did full repairs including engines, transmissions, complex diagnostics and other time consuming jobs but "it's a new world" and "we don't need anymore A level techs" according to the managers. That's why your rental car is a beat up piece of crap.

This is an industry in which you either have to BE good, GET good, or GET out of the way. There is no time to f*** about for the mech on commission. The salaried mechanic definitely has the time and opportunity to train the less experienced, but they should NOT be obligated to. Just because you know a lot does not automatically mean you have to become a teacher/mentor in the shop, unless it was in your job description. Its a job of production and its not always compatible with peoples feelings and intelligence variables.

I have about 2 weeks left to "improve" my efficiency. I left my last shop because of toxic bs. Theres so much favoritism with the dispatcher at my current shop to other techs I keep getting .3 and .5 jobs with warranty jobs on the side. Also apart of that is other techs will do everything else on the RO# and i get what they didnt want to do. I made a point to management that the dispatcher is not helping me succeed. On top of that there is less work coming in due to various factors such as the economy, taxes and election year. Im clocking out early just to keep my score high just to have a high efficiency. Id still be working off the clock. Been applying crazy to other locations but im getting ghosted or rejected. Overrall job market is tight. Simply "thats why tool boxes have wheels" isnt always that simple, trying to find another shop is hard.

Brake fluid is a very overlooked fluid in cars and trucks. It can turn acidic very fast. Whenever I do pads and rotors I push back the pistons in the calipers with the bleeders open. It pushes out the most contaminated and heated fluid in the system and keeps the bleeders from seizing when you need to open them the most. Then I bleed the system.

Im working at a shop that pays zero labor for oil changes, batteries, cabin filters, tire rotations, wipers, air filters, "code pulls" even charging system tests... so yea i gotta say I dont do that. Its not good for the customer or the shop. Ive watched ameuture general service guys trying to diagnose extended crank conditions that were miscommunicated as charging system. Ive seen all the data needed to properly diagnose an issue deleted. Recently had an audi return with zero oil in it after having almost 20 hours of service work... the reason was the technician handed off the oil change to an incompetent GS who didnt replace the drain plug even after being told to do so. I guess my point...or rant.... is that thinking a technician on flat rate shouldn't be paid for ANY service is the most toxic thing of all. I despise having to go and bitch about hours that somehow just disappeared. I was told last week "what are you complaining about? You turned 83 hours last week." .. and i said "no, i turned 84.1 hours last week." Its just bad for everyone when a system is in place that rewards service writers for screwing over the technicians.

I’ve been in the car repair business nearly 50 years. I’d like to hear not only a car shop but any business without problems. I’ve seen doctors, lawyers and corporate executives always changing places. Usually stops when they get to the top. Then they are the overbearing “owners”.
I wish you well at your new place Michael. Good idea to keep quiet about it. A few other TH-camrs have problems with subs calling them at work to “chat”.

We're hourly, every nre guy off the street or other shop gets more then thenguys at the shop, old guys complain wnd dont work, some new guys like me 2 yrs ago work hard and prove their eorth, ehile soem nee guys just dont do anything. I been on both sides i was the new guy getting more then coleigues but i quickly pulled my weight learned fast and even help others now but now i see nee hires rhat know nothing at all and chill and get more than me so its an endless cycle, companies rather hire new talent then keep employees happy. Second toxic trait is having 2 shifts and constant set ups from dayshift as they just go home wnd leave all the dumb vars for us or they have waiters and pass them along or even disg pass alongs and they are misdiagnosed or just terrible laundry list cars thats they didnt wanna do, also they do the easy work, while second we do the hard stuff. Its the auto industry its all toxic, flat or hourly

Had an old guy who i was hired to do the same work as him, but also other aspects in the same sort of field. he ONLY touched ONE SPECIFIC part of the shops business. Nothing else. He would talk for 3 4 hours of the day, getting nothing done, take twice as long for any repair, then when im out of the room, bitch because hes in my way and i spent 15 seconds to work around that, and get the job done, and out of there, on to the next. Always toxic to me. Horrible person, horrible man, shit show. A year and a half of non stop HORRIBLE harrasing, fucking with me, grease on my tools, had an air hose down my ass, fiddling in my personal life, making fun of me to every customer, every person there. I should have clocked them, and left about a year and 4 months prior. But i'm more of an introvert, not wanting to start issues. Don't talk much, just do my job and go home. One other co worker same deal, didn't talk much, as they were ALWAYS bitching to and about him, granted he fucked up some customer items and shop had to pay for them but. I don't even know if i wanna go back into the industry or just go do something simple, hell, local spot is hiring for a dollar above min wage. Who the HELL is showing up, with tools, for another dollar.

I worked in a busy dealership for 13 years 1/2 of that as shop Forman, we had 19 mechanics on average. There was one mechanic that was very toxic , if there was a fight or argument in the shop he was always one half of it. He would falsify warranty claims and customer pay work, but he also had the owner and front office fooled. I also have to mention that by the time he was 30 he had been married 3 times and he liked to draw swastika’s around the shop ( yes he is a white supremacist ). We eventually went to the management and they formed an exit plan for him, he wasn’t fired and he didn’t quit the dealership and him parted ways. The very next Friday the service department threw a Bar b Que and we called it the (It’s Sweet without Pete ) Bar b Que we even had a banner made up for it.

we get the car has to be done or its a waiter then it sits outside for hours or until the next day or longer. Our shop expects us to be 110% every month. Then when someone is out they expect us to step it up even more. Or its a 4 wheel brake job and a brake flush you can have that done in an hour. Or the advisor states vehicle needs to go tonight, and proceeds to leave and tells us on their way out just give the paperwork and keys to so and so... I Get the numbers from a managment standpoint but at the same time they aren't looking at why the numbers are where they want them. Work distribution is the biggest issue i have seen over the years. The "senority" techs pick and choose what they want, are qualified for all the work they refuse to do. That work gets pushed on the in experienced guys. Or i'm constantly told my productivity isn't 110% its usually around 80-100% i do a lot of warranty and heavy diag, i also have apprenctices and other techs coming up to me asking questions, if that was factored in to calcualting my effeicency i bet i would be well over 110% customers don't make it any easier on us. We had a 23 vette come in the shop with out an appointment and the owener expected us to drop everything for him because he has a new corvette he spent a lot of money one. and i can only imagine thats like that for most people who work on higer priced/ or higher end cars. Reality is no one wants to leave there car, they want it back the same day, they bring it in with a list of complaints and half are intermittents.
We all go to work because we need that paycheck to live. We don't live to work. we work to live. Sometimes we do need to work late but when its a pattern or every day then nope not anymore. We need to take care of the customers but customers also need to realize not everything is free. This ever since bs needs to stop. There are times where Ever since is 100% related and there are comebacks. The toxic environment i've been in for years has take its toll on my mental health, and i no longer have a passion for cars. Only reason i put up with stuff at the time was becasue i was making good money. But from friends in other fields and jobs workers are faced with similar toxic environments.

We made up the first time but the second fight over some packaged candy, low pay, favoritism for him and his son and the fact manager didnt fire his ass for coming at me with a breaker bar (supposed to be instant termination) made me quit Firestone. Everyone else but him was chill. Must of struct a nerve so much that his son gives me the look and threaten to quit if i return. Everyone else but them were cool .
Entire situation nearly made me quit the industry.

As the "Flat Rate Master" You should know that making TH-cam videos, and "helping techs" in a flat rate shop doesn't make hours. Start doing "Hourly Rate Master" content 😂. One thing I've learned over the years is that you can reasonably give bad techs everything they want, but there's always an excuse when the work doesn't get done. A good tech usually gets it done with no drama, and the bad ones are typically the complainers who create a toxic work environment. I believe you were fired because you were toxic. The fact that your whole channel has become a complaint session about everyone else's job and points out all the negativity in the industry says it all. All jobs have their pluses and minuses. One thing I haven't heard is any real introspective thoughts on why you may have been let go. I hear you boast about how great you are as a tech and teacher, but everyone understands if you're truly a good tech, even with quirks, it's extraordinarily hard to get fired. Something isn't adding up.😮

The whole automotive repair industry is TOXIC with the flat rate system being at the core of much of the toxicity. It creates the perfect environment for thieves, discontent, and fluctuating wages. Not to mention it empowers management to play favorites and reward brown nosers. We’re supposed to be highly trained technicians correct? Tell me what other highly trained people have to try to make a living like we as technicians do?
If the pay system was fixed, I’d say 75-80% of the technician “shortage” issue would resolve itself. Do I expect any of this to change in my lifetime? No. Hell, it’s been an issue since the 80s when I believed the Great Lie and believed that it was somehow goi to get better down the road.
