Firearms instructor here, props to how attentive you were and for constantly asking questions. You did literally everything right, despite being nervous you kept checking in to make sure you were being safe. That's an excellent thing to do for your first ever range day

Firearms instructors don't show off to students/newbies. They show people how to safely and properly handle firearms. Your job is to observe and inform, not to strut. I cannot think of a single class I ever taught where I felt the need to fire a round. Occasionally there would be someone who would hang around after class to either challenge or learn. I win either way and everybody comes out ahead.

@@jamesford7182…..my dad is a firearms instructor. He shows them how to stand, aim, pull the trigger and that everything is fine when he does. It’s not to strut or show off, it’s to say “look, this is how you do it and see, nothing to it”. They get more comfortable with a demonstration. Simple as that. If he is instructing kids who are a bit nervous, he might have me or one of my brothers and sisters shoot to show them or ask one of their parents to, if the parent has experience and is already comfortable. It’s all about putting the newbie at ease.

@@WyattRyeSway I only instructed firearms for fifty years. I guess your dad is just superior to me. Does that make you happy? Should I contact my past students and tell them to return their awards and medals because I should have taught them different. Perhaps you should ask your dad for advice. Clearly the military didn't teach me properly.

I often taught civilian classes where someone was over confident in his abilities got out shot by some else who had never held a gun but listened to and followed instructions. A lot of those newbies became enthusiasts. A surprising amount of the ones who were out shot were not aiming with their dominant eye. Their shooting improved after they made the difficult adjustments. I am not sure which outcome made me happier, the newbie or the improved gun owner.

leaning into the gun is an important technique. The shotgun wasn't cycling properly because you were leaning back. Beyond that, you did a good job for a first time. I personally would never take someone to an indoor range for a first time. The large concrete room just causes the sounds to reverberate and be louder. Honestly, it is the sounds of the guns firing that scares people the most. So being in an enclosed space like that just makes it worse.

    • @ShaggyRogers1
      @ShaggyRogers1 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

Yeah, indoor range for a first timer is almost always sensory overload. You can't properly teach someone when you can literally feel the room vibrating from gunshots. I always take people that have questionable or no experience shooting to outdoor ranges during the off-peak hours for the first trip. Even if nothing else, you have to be aware of what everyone else is doing while at the range, not just yourself.
The biggest safety concern while at a public range is the same as driving on public roadways. It doesn't matter how safe you are being if the person that happens to be next to you is being a hazard.

Anytime I take a newbie to the range we start with a .22 pistol and work our way up in caliber before finishing with an AR and a Garand. If they hit a point in the middle where they've gone one past their comfort zone, we just dial it back and stick to what they're having fun with.

When you turned around and motioned towards your shirt collar, I instantly knew you got hot brass down your shirt. That's something that should honestly be taught about before anyone shoots for the first time. Keeping the barrel down range and finger off the trigger is pretty self explanatory and easy enough to get across, but many experienced shooters forget that new shooters typically don't ever even think about the possibility of hot brass going down their shirt, especially for women in a bra. It is typically the first safety incident that first time shooters experience, and many accidental shootings have happened due to people behaving poorly.
Glad to see you guys stayed safe and got to experience the "evil guns" that everyone wants to villainize.

Americans have been taught how to hold a gun when we had cap guns and in grade school. We learned to use BB guns just a bit later. At eleven years old, I shot my first rifle. It's sort of weird to see grown adults thinking a rifle or pistol is some sort of evil, poison which is terrifying to just hold. My question is how did they get to the range? Do they have a driver's license? Who does their cooking for them with a stove or oven?

Good muzzle control on the semiautomatic pistol. Best of all, by learning what it was like with the .22LR, you learned to not drop the barrel in anticipation of the recoil. That's a big part of how you were so accurate with the bigger pistol, and a common issue for new shooters.

Ayeee nice man, I love hitting the range on the weekends, and to kinda answer your question at 23:07 it really depends on everything from the size of the round to the length of the barrel to the temperature outside when you’re shooting 😂
But generally good handguns are accurate to around 20 or 30 meters
Rifles are hard to gauge since there’s so many rounds and barrels but for the most part if you see it clearly with your naked eye, you can reach it
And shotguns are completely different because the big 3 shells that everyone uses are:
Buckshot-used for hunting mostly, fires 2-4 large projectiles, pretty accurate up to about 30 meters
Birdshot- what most people think about when they hear “shotgun”, just a ton of tiny projectiles meant to hit (you guessed it) birds without accuracy being too much of a factor
And my favorite, slug- literally a 1 ounce metal ball that’ll blow a hole in pretty much whatever you put in front of it 😂

If I might make a recommendation: try an outdoor range next time. Personally, I hate the reverberations of indoor ranges cause it makes me jump reflexively, and no matter what I do for ear pro, i hear vibrations after shooting. Outdoor range, no such issues and usually no rso complaining that I fired twice in 30 seconds.
