Gosh, I would take my beautiful sister to as many concerts as possible...because she had a beautiful voice and because of our shitty childhood she didn't have the self confidence to explore...anyway she was 17 when we went to see her...she died at 38, hospitals fault. So love Teena and so many more that saved my life as a kid... Karen Carpenter

I don't think they really have these kind of love ballads today. I can remember dancing to the upbeat funky songs at the club or party. But then trying to find that special girl to dance those slow songs (like this) with.
See youngsters, this here is what we called a Slow Jam, and we did something what we called “slow dancing”, which usually led to phone numbers, romance, marriage , and everything else , and yes, I’m sure a lot of y’all were made to this song right here 😁😁😁😁😁😁

Yes, you're right about class/school, and yes, the kids are failing the tests. People like us are trying to help them with their homework, but they'd rather go play.....play so-called music that has no meaning, no feeling, no heart or soul.
It truly breaks my heart to see people Amber and Jordan's age not even trying to learn about different types of music from different decades and have their children follow in their footsteps. Thankfully, these two are giving their kids a chance. 👍🏽

@donnab I just turned 68 and I was listening to Teena before Rick and I listen to all of their music still, but just in the past couple of weeks I've been playing Lisa Fischer singing "How can I ease the pain 😢" because my man that I've loved for 25 years ended our Love the day before I turned 68. So yeah, old school music will get you through all of life's challenges and loves ❤️ We really did have the Best music ever 🎉🎉🎉

Teena Marie was truly an amazing multi-genre singer..funk/r&b/soul/dance!!! "Portuguese Love" "Behind The Groove" "I Need Your Lovin" "Square Biz" her music was ALWAYS on my 80s mix tapes!!...sooo tragic she died so young at age 54..truly a great loss!

My Mom saw Rick in concert in the mid 80's. When he got to this song he announced Tina couldn't come and he'd do the song alone. When he got to the part "Remember when you used to...." she came out walking out belting "Looovve...." Mom said the audience lost...their...minds!

When I'm watching you two, I realize that I took the music from my generation for granted. Of course I knew this is a fantastic song, however. Rick and Teena both debuted when I was a teenager and I've been hearing them ever since. Watching the reaction just now made me hear it with new ears. I was SO blessed to live in this musical era. 💛

If ever in this life there were two people who met by fate it was Teena and Rick! Monumental talents. Industry giants. Deeply missed, and will NEVER be replaced.
AND...Legend has it that the day they were to record "Fire & Desire", Teena was sick with a fever and wanted to postpone the session. But, Rick was ready to do it anyway and thought about using another singer to fill in. Apparently, when Teena found out, she was not having it. She went into the studio anyway, cut her vocals and then went to the ER from the studio! Great story.

The Teena Marie(Fire & Desire) effect when she starts singing. You throw your hands up. Still raises the hair on my neck and pops up my senses to this day even though I know it’s coming. Loved y’all’s reaction to them soaring vocally. That was fun to see.
THIS is one of the best duets EVER!!! Rick and Teena had a long relationship professionally and a short one romantically. They were part of a new generation for Motown and carried the name for the 80's.
Rick and Teena were quite competitive with each other.
Rick James could have easily been a operatic tenor and he was a musical genius him and Teena were a remarkable pairing and we all are blessed to have heard them R.I.P.

Yes! Rick James is mostly thought of as a Funk artist but he is also a great R&B artist. He is very underrated.

They had a beautiful chemistry and blew the doors off with this song! Back in the day, we had no phones nor internet and heard all music through the radio, album or tape! Blew me away when I saw that Tina Marie was a little petite white woman!
So happy you got back around to Teena Marie!!! Given the musical elements you guys really like, I think "You make love like Springtime" and "Tune in Tomorrow" are great to follow up with. They are both from her first album, and made people take notice.

One of the best songs ever!!! Definitely the best R&B duet of all-Time. The most passionate song I ever heard. Rick was great, but Teena Marie was not of this world. Despite being by far the best "blue eyed" soul singer of all-time, she is still underated.

I am so happy that you did this reaction. I am 62 years old and to this day, this is my all time favorite ballad. Nothing has ever come close. I saw Teena and Rick together perform this back in the day in Philly and OMG we joked about how all the ladies needed blow dryers after watching them perform. Their performance and chemistry was off the charts! They are both legends in the music industry. R.I.P. to both.

Yes, Rick James (RIP) and Teena Marie (RIP) were amazing together. I think this was their their second and most popular duet of 3. They also did Square Biz, a dance track that helped introduce Teena Marie. But don't be fooled, most of the rest of Rick James music is Punk Funk with a heavy guitar and the horns of his Stone City Band.
Rick James' voiceabd vocal technique were underated. He was excellent. He has this great uptempo tune 'You and I' that showed off his skill pretty well. Teena Marie was also fantastic as well, her song 'I Need Your Lovin' from her incredible album 'Irons in the Fire', shows her funk skills with grace and depth. This song shows both of them at the height of their powers. Kudos to your first listen.

And yall were looking for the wording of the vocal runs. And yea to me with this song you can hear the love that existed between them when they made it, it didn't last, it didn't work out but they really made some great music together and this song is the epitome of that. Rest in peace to both of them, 2 phenomenal voices. I have recommendations for both that hit this similar energy (nothing I've heard from either quite compares to this).

There is something magical about the experience of watching you two (Jay/Amber), with all of the musical appreciation you have, experiencing THIS song for the first time. For those of us who grew up while this was just some radio slowjam (albeit a banger! No doubt!), it must really hit different to hear it for the first time as adults who really know music!
