  • Whenever I encounter new people, one common question they often pose to me is, “What brought you to come to Germany?” There is indeed a meaningful and special reason behind my decision to move to Germany.
In this video, I would like to take the opportunity to share not only insights from my childhood but also the deeper motivations that ultimately led me to make the decision to relocate to Germany. It’s a story that encompasses my history and the experiences that shaped my perspective.

As a German what you mentioned is a reason why i wouldn’t like to live in Japan. I’m used to have more holidays and not too extreme long working hours and I really wouldn’t change that. Work is important, but if there’s nothing more than that in life for me it would be pointless.

@ i think so too but competition is hard these days and we need to find ways to keep up. Especially many people in China and Japan work like there is nothing else which is sad. I dont have family but still there are plenty of things i enjoy and they give me the strength to go on. If we lose those things we have no energy to do any better.....i am worried for such a future

Quite a story. Thank you for sharing it with us. I can relate to not seeing father enough. Mine worked rotating shifts at a chemical plant, so when I was at home, he would often be at work or in bed sleeping
My favourite childhood memory had a rather unfortunate reason: My mother fell ill when I was 6 and had to spend several weeks in hospital, so I came to live with my uncle and aunt for a while. There I was, a city boy who knew nothing else but the still very industrial Ruhr (it's the early 70s), suddenly living in a very rural area. My uncle kept cats and dogs and chickens, the farms next door had pigs and cows and horses and would raise different sorts of grain. I loved it and over the following ten years or so, I would often go back during the summer hollidays. Helping with the harvest, bringing the cows in at dusk, taking long walks with the dogs, learning to ride a bike, parties incl. getting drunk, country weddings, first kiss ...
To this day I can recognise wheat, rye, barley, oat and corn when I see them on the fields and know a bit about the wild animals living in the German countryside. OK, not exactly a lifechanging skill. But I am sure these experiences shaped me in some way that I couldn't describe in words.
I'm turning 60 this summer and have just begun writing invitations for my birthday party. Uncle and aunt have passed away, but I plan to have all my country cousins and their families with me that day.

Reminds me of my childhood - after my parents divorced my mom moved multiple times with me in tow before finally settling down in a coastal town in Schleswig-Holstein. The regional dialects along the way were like language barriers at first, but helped me develop an ear for languages.

Thank you for sharing your story! It’s fascinating to see how childhood experiences can shape our life decisions. I found the contrast between the work culture in Japan and Germany, and its impact on your family, particularly touching. I can completely understand why you find life in Germany so enriching. Unfortunately, my own childhood memories are very fragmented due to an 'accident'-I can only recall things more clearly from around the age of 13 or 14.

Its good to hear your voice, gives the video a more personal atmosphere. Do you like corriander ? I put it often in meals with minced meat. I am glad you came back. Maybe when you are in Hamburg give me a ring :D Not sure what my best experience was from my childhood. I looking back my childhood for many would have been boring but i think to not worry too much about stuff and knowing you have plenty of time to sort out your future is quite something. Depending on how you grow up there is plenty of freedom especially when you are in your early teens....later responsebility catches and time flies. Maybe going to the cinema was nice on weekends. I dont go there often anymore these days. I think your dad might be happy you sometimes woke him up. I think he knows that is worth the effort and i also think its wise you spend the time together as much as possible since its often short and therefor precious.

I can’t tell if you are single, are married, if your dad and mom live near or even with you in the same household in Germany. Interesting videos, wish I knew more. Would like to see photos of you as a child in Germany. I lived in Munich as a four year old..my dad was a US Army NCO. We left after just one year, so I never experienced the US Army school system in Germany. But I had wonderful memories, and like you, was curious about the world and other cultures. By God’s grace I was able to live in Germany for three years as the wife of a defense contractor. I loved all the amazing European travel adventures we had. Wish we could have stayed longer, but I’m terrible with languages and would never have become fluent. Still, I’d have loved to have stayed a lot longer. Enjoy your European life! Japanese work culture is very harsh, maybe even cruel. So hard to be separated as a family.

Der Wind wog mich und die Bewegungen des Baumes waren wie eine wundervolle Umarmung einer Mutter. Niemand sah mich da und ich war teil des Baumes. Es gab nichts schoeneres fuer mich. What you discribe seems to be a very common problem with japanese work culture. I see why germany must feel like paradise in comparison, especially as an independent woman. Let's hope germany can keep up its highly valued labor laws in the future. There are not many countries in the world where working class people can enjoy that much freedom. Germans often forget that because they take it for granted, but it's definitely not.
I'm not sure if I understand your ideal vision of family. Do you also have a career goal or do you prefer to become a housewife? Either way i sincerely hope you find what you are looking for. 🙂
