    Excellent video! Thank you Les for confirming what I told s buddy of mine. We were out coyote hunting one evening and he was worried about the call. I told him that coyotes aren't going to reason out if that is a call, a real animal or anything else. The coyote just know it's a distress call (easy meal).

    Great talk I started 42 years ago an yellowhammer is what I like the best an you know most coyotes an fox do not know what one is but they come running in. So you are so right about calling an really enjoy your videos. Thank you for keeping hunting so much alive.

      @everythingoutdoorswithlesj4975  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      M K, thank you. Yes, the yellowhammer has probably been one of the most successful sounds out there. Sometimes, it is just the "high" pitch that excites the predators.
      Thanks again for watching and commenting on your success as well. LJ

    Les, I found a neat little trick on coyotes that are hung up. If the lip squeak doesn't work. Try rubbing two quarters together. I have a couple with holes drilled in them on my lanyard. It works. Watch what your dogs do when you try it..

    Great advice Les, I've always said that the best distress call is the one you're using when a coyote is in the area. You can do everything right and if there isn't a yote there to hear the call you have zero chance of calling him in. Covering ground and watching your wind are way more important than if you're using a jack, cotton, or bird call.

    Great video Les, I'm 60 miles east of Red Deer Alberta so I know what you were talking about for terrain and temps. Took my father out Xmas morning. It was -33 degrees Celsius. Had Coyotes answer back all around us that morning. He didn't believe that there could be that many in one small area. Glad for you down south with Mr. Trump, we have an idiot drama teacher here. Keep up the great videos, I'm learning lots!

    Please don’t reply Les but I’m glad I found your TH-cam page. I’m located in central New York State. We have a helluva lot of coyotes up here but they’re a tough to bring in. I’ve never used a Jack Rabbit distress just for that reason we don’t have such a thing. Thanks Les for the advice your a true inspiration and I don't mean just coyote hunting. I thought I was going to see some hunting but instead I got some genuine advice. That toothpick cowboy story got me chuckling cause my first experience of a jackrabbit distress was an actual wounded one in the back of my dad's pickup and it was laying back there wounded in a pile with others and I stepped on it and it started its shrill... fast forward. I've tried a lot of calls out there and your right they really don't sound exactly like an actual jackrabbit or cottontail, just close enough. That guy was arrogant to say the least and acting like an ignorant to disrespect you especially knowing who you were in the first place....maybe he didn't but I doubt it... When I got into coyote hunting I just mimicked the jackrabbit I remember crying in the back of my dad's truck before I put it out of its misery, albeit artificial it works most of the time. I never forgot that sound. Funny thing I even heard of coyotes coming to some ring tones on unexpected incoming cellphone calls while in the moment...lol...coyotes are curious by nature its just that simple...Thanks Les for the advice.

    • @everythingoutdoorswithlesj4975
      @everythingoutdoorswithlesj4975  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      C D, thank you! I love your story and your experience as well! I actually had a person in wyoming telling me that him and his brother were hunting jackrabbits in the early 80's with .22's along a river and they shot a Jack that started wailing. Out of nowhere, a coyote ran in and grabbed the jackrabbit and ran off. This was even after the sound of the .22 going off. Like you, I have heard a few animals bawl and you never forget that sound. Thanks again for watching and commenting! LJ

    • @StropSharp
      @StropSharp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that your advice about just getting out there enough times to have success is one of most sound advice to give someone who is new to this. Doo it...lol. when I started doing this sometimes right from the side of the road and sometimes right form the truck and believe me I have called in and killed coyotes that way. I don't recommend anyone do that as a regular routine, but sometimes it works so well it will blow your mind. Just depends on how gullible or hungry they are, or how rusty your truck is....haha

    I have never hunted coyotes but hunt just about everything else and I am going in about a month in mid Missouri, so what should I be looking for as far as my spot goes, where should I set up, what should I avoid, and what are good conditions in summer or any other time. Get a spot with a good view and especially a good view downwind and to the sides where the dogs will generally come from to check you out (your sound/calls). Be patient and don't get discouraged if you come up empty-handed. Coyotes are fickle beasts and especially wary. I don't know Missouri but it being the "show me" state, I'm willing to bet folks will help you. Good luck!

    Great video Les as usual. Question, what is your take on using decoys? I have had limited success.

      Thanks Lone Ranger! Same as you on the decoy! A decoy will spook about 1/2 of your coyotes. That is of course my opinion on what I have experienced. Thanks for watching and commenting! LJ

      Thanks for your reply. Thinking perhaps getting a decoy red fox but not sure I want to spend the money in case success is limited. Keep your videos coming!! Too bad you have had bad experiences with our Border Patrol....bit of a "game" they play in regards to their questioning sometimes. Had the same experience going to Duluth,Minn. couple years back.

      A long long time ago Lone, I would use a tanned red fox hide and drape it over a weed or bush about 10 yards in front of my position. Let me tell you this.....I had big, mature coyotes that had their eyes and ears pinned straight at that hide running full blast at it on numerous occassions. Pretty much shotgunned in self defense. Coyotes "Hate" red foxes.....cats.....etc...! Thanks for watching and commenting! LJ

      Both of the Brandl boys. I am retired now, but worked close with Jeff for years and wore the same color John does. '-) Let me know when you want that cup, we can gang up on Jeff.

    That guy you were talking about Les, obviously doesn't know Alberta. We have tons of jackrabbit in this province. Not sure what he was smoking. Maybe something in that toothpick he was playing with lol. We don't have many cottontails but I use cottontail distress calls a lot and it's proven extremely successful for me. Like you said, those coyotes are curious critters!

    Hey Les, I had stand that a pair came in on me and seen me move using the orange P. Q howler. They didn't wind me and they slipped off in woods before I could get a shot. What do you do ? Can I try em again and how long would you wait to go back after em? I was howling so should I use different sound this time? It was at daylight also so would you try it a different time of day ? Thanks Les I know your busy but no one else is taking the time to teach us new predator hunters like you!!!

    Hey I have a calling question. I went out at 2am for the first time night hunting and they were not responding to rabbit distress. So I switched to coyotes tipping and howling on my fox pro. And about 3 mins went by and I could hear them carrying on in the woods but they never came out into the field for me to see them. In a situation like that what do I do? Wait? Try rabbit? Or keep trying coyotes

    Good stuff as always I called in my first coyote on accident as a kid going hunting with my I could sound like a hurt puppy I would do that to stir up rabbits but a coyote came and I got it close with my 1st H&R .410 but I really
    didn't pursue coyote hunting now it is my favorite type of hunting to do. before I used any type of hand calls I just made one from a straw and has been just as good as a primos or any other type thx I live on a reservation and could go hunting every day if I wanted to but I know how you feel sometimes you just get your fill.

    Les, after watching this video and hearing your comments about coming back north of the 49th Parallel, I'll "Hunter-Host" you if you ever want to come to Southern Alberta (Calgary) and shoot coyotes (and not get heckled with stupid comments). I have permission on 4.5 sections or almost 2900 acres. I also know of a couple large areas of public land...
    My best last year was a 55-60 lb yote, 5ft long after drying on the stretching board !
